A user writes in: "For the second time in just over a month, Comcast's smtp servers are not accepting e-mail destined for the popular MSN Hotmail service. The official explanation is that Comcast is blocking the mail as a courtesy to MSN/Hotmail engineers working on the problem. However, MSN Hotmail is not acknowledging that the problem exists."

There's a number of ongoing discussions in our forums on this issue here and here.

It is rejecting as I post this: error msg

This is the error msg:
The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was 'xxxxxxx@hotmail.com'. Subject 'test hotmail', Account: 'xxx xxxxxxx', Server: 'smtp.comcast.net', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 permit denied', Port: 465, Secure(SSL): Yes, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

And it is being done by Comcast server; not the Hotmail server.

no... if they were using authentication to avoid mail relay then @msn.com or @hotmail.com couldn't use comcast's outgoing mail servers... comcast is blocking mail going TO msn or hotmail addresses. The only logical response I can see is because the new sober variant has hit MSN/hotmail pretty hard.

Yup...

My wife tried sending an email yesterday through COmcast to Hotmail and it bounced. She asked me why but the bounce had basically no usable info in it.

Connection attempts to hotmails servers give that. Doesn't make much sense, really. "Violations will result in use of equipment located in California and other states." What? That doesn't make any sense.

Not just Comcast MSN/Hotmail

The ISP I work for (Cogeco) is experiencing massive delivery problems with Hotmail, we're seeing minimum delivery delays of 3+ hours and that's GOOD! We're seeing maximum delivery delays of over 20+ hours.

Most of Hotmails servers are intermittent accepting mail, if we sent them 10 emails we'll see delivery for 2 emails and then Connection refused (port 25) or Connection timed out (port 25) for the other 8. As per usual Hotmail isn't saying anything, even their status page states all is good The service is available; there are no known network issues at this time. which is simply not true.

I know many other ISPs are seeing this and thus far attempts to contact, work with, get a heartbeat from Hotmail have been met with silence...we could probably help them out if they'd only talk to any of us. They even left me a voicemail last week but many messages later we still have no contact with them.

BTW, this isn't anything new, Hotmail rarely works 100% but generally speaking it's much better then of late which is why other ISPs are noticing problems as well. I suspect much of this is likely due to new virus variants of last week and their servers getting hit hard...that's understandable, I just wish they'd talk to the rest of us as when Hotmail has issues accepting mail it affects our services and we need to take measures to ensure non-hotmail delivery is not impacted by the pain of hotmail.

Hotmail people....if you're out there...there's a bunch of us that want to talk to you! See my profile and contact me if you'd like to work with us Canadian ISPs on this. (This is how bad it is, I'm pleading for hotmail contact on a public site!)

Finally admitting to blocking

This afternoon we finally got some people on the Comcast Forums to admit that Comcast was indeed blocking all mail sent to Hotmail/MSN accounts. Comcast's own smtp servers are doing the blocking it would appear. They say they are doing this to keep the mail from building up in the mail queues until the issues with MSN/Hotmail are worked out. The big issue I have is they are blocking any message that even has one Hotmail/MSN recipient. So if you are sending a message to 10 of your friends and one is on Hotmail, the whole message is rejected. Surely there is a way to manage this better.

Yes there is. I don't know their setup but it would seem reasonable to assume they could map all hotmail destined messages to one specific server so that the queued hotmail would only affect queued hotmail.

Hey jbob,

I was wrong about that. I did some further testing and found that the mail does indeed go to the non-rejected recipients. The "550 permit denied" after a RCPT command but before the DATA command only affects the rejected recipients. Otherwise, it affects them all.

And I did test it to make sure I wasn't wrong twice in a row. That -never- happens!

Re: Finally admitting to blocking

Ok wait a minute then. This is what my OE log shows from todays attempt to send an email to several addy's with one being to a Hotmail addy:

SMTP: 11:57:46 [rx] 220 comcast.net - Maillennium ESMTP/MULTIBOX rwcrmhc11 #411
SMTP: 11:57:46 [tx] HELO NO1XP
SMTP: 11:57:47 [rx] 250 comcast dot net
SMTP: 11:57:47 [tx] MAIL FROM: "my Comcast addy"
SMTP: 11:57:47 [rx] 250 ok
SMTP: 11:57:47 [tx] RCPT TO: "Yahoo Addy"
SMTP: 11:57:47 [rx] 250 ok; [simple] forward to "Yahoo Addy"
SMTP: 11:57:47 [tx] RCPT TO: "Myrealbox addy"
SMTP: 11:57:47 [rx] 250 ok; [simple] forward to "Myrealbox addy"

SMTP: 11:57:47 [rx] 550 permit denied
SMTP: 11:57:47 [tx] QUIT
SMTP: 11:57:47 [rx] 221 Closing connection. Good bye.

According to what you just said all the addy's before the hotmail one should have been delivered but they were not. The whole message was rejected in my test. It was only after I removed the hotmail addy would any of the recipients get a delivery.

Dammit why are my email addy's removed? I have them munged!

I replied to you in the other thread.

This surprised me, too. It's an Outlook Express thing, but I'm not sure I'd call it a bug. Since OE is an end-user's client and not an SMTP server itself, this might be acceptable.

Outlook doesn't behave this way.

Yeah I read your reply over on Comcast. I am wondering if Thunderbird has this same behavior? I've been wanting to make the switch. I have Outlook but don't use it much.

Makes me glad for Gmail which is neutral on all mail servers because it is invite only. I have several hundred invites to use up so if you want one I can get ya one.

Re: just be glad

I could use an invite for gmail. My comcast email died a spam death. I was in the process of sending my change of email address mail and I ran into this Thunderbird, Comcast, MSN/Hotmail issue. Don't know if I want any part of it.

G Mail would be stellar.

msn problems

Why is it that everyone is so quick to blame big bad Comcast. MSN is notorious for problems, ask anyone with a hotmail or msn account. The problem is not with blocking on comcast's behalf but a virus problem on the msn servers. MSN would of course not post this, why would they. That would mean they would actually be telling the truth for once.
