Comcast Made a TV Show Just to Promote its On Demand Services

Comcast this week announced that it's getting into the original content business, sort of. According to a Comcast press release (hat tip, The Verge), the company has created a new show named "Glued" that Comcast claims is a "a humorous take on how people’s favorite television shows change the way they act and interact with each other." But unlike many shows, this one's really sort of just a glorified advertisement for Comcast's Xfinity on demand service, and its creatively-named "Stream" streaming service.

For $15 a month, the service provides Comcast's Internet-only customers access to live channels from all the major broadcast networks and HBO as well as "thousands of on demand choices." It's the latest cable industry attempt to keep cord cutters in house in the face of slow but steady subscriber losses.

Stream is only currently available in Chicago and Boston as a beta product, but Comcast expects to quickly expand the service footprint, and hired the Droga5 ad firm to build a comedy series to help sell it and other Comcast on demand products.

“TV is more than entertainment – it’s a universally shared experience that brings people together, and Glued explores the common behaviors we all recognize when we get hooked on a show,” said Sherri Davis, Senior Director, Brand Experience at Comcast. “Sharon Horgan has an incredible talent for highlighting these cultural truths, demonstrating how Xfinity connects people to the things they love and enjoy.”

We're especially looking forward to the episode in which the couple discusses how Comcast's usage caps make streaming significantly more expensive for binge watchers.

Too much profit, too little management oversight

Leads to brainless fripperies like this. Why would anyone in the Comcast management group approve something this idiotic? Who is the audience? Why waste the money?

About the only reason I can come up with is that the VP/Marketing has a kid in film school, and this was his/her semester project. Otherwise it's irrational.

I dare Comcast to start a live call in show

Where customers get to "enthusiastically" call in about questions with their service.
