| If they require a deposit? Then it's not a FREE Wii. I mean, the question is, what exactly is the deposit? If it's to pay for the first 2 months of service, then that's one thing. If it's a security deposit, then the Wii is definitely not 'free', and should not be advertised as such. My guess is that it's a 3rd party offering the Wii, and it's not really 'free' at all. -- The happiest countries are the most secular. | Wii Promotion I live in the Chicago suburbs and heard the radio ad for the free Wii this morning. The disclaimer at the end of the ad stated for new residential customers who sign a 24 month contract. Promotional rate ends after 12 months and normal service fees apply after. So it sounds to me like you are going to pay a hell of a lot more over the months 13-24 than the Wii is worth. There was no mention of credit checks from what I heard. | |

| I'm trying to figure out what exactly is wrong here. When I've signed up for cable in the past, they almost never offered promotional rates for as long as a year. IIRC, the promo on my HSI that Cox gave me in Phoenix ran out after a mere 3 months.
Comcast has been offering 12 month promotional rates on their triple play for some time now. So unless you're one of those people who thinks they deserve to have an eternal promotional rate, I'm having a hard time seeing the problem.
I suppose you could object to the two year contract. That is something that's new to cable. But no-one's forcing your hand there either. At least here in Denver (which according to Karl is one of the places offering the Wii—I haven't seen or heard any ads yet), Comcast is still pushing the same old 12 month triple play promo with no contract whatsoever. -- "Think for yourselves and let others enjoy the privilege to do so too."

I have paid comcast via electronic check TWICE in the past month and both times they claim it was returned. This was two different payments (for the same amount) from two different banks. Come on Comcast what is wrong with your system? AND THEY CHARGED ME $25 a pop for "returned check fee."

| Kindred spirits The company with the worst picture quality (SD or HD) is giving away the one current-gen console that can't output HD. Maybe it's so Comcast users never get to see a HD picture on something other than cable to compare their crappy cable picture quality to.
Or maybe Comcast sees a kindred spirit in Nintendo.
Comcast: crappy channel lineup crappy picture quality just plain incompetent laughably expensive
Nintendo (Wii): crappy game library last generation graphics incompetent at seeing trends emerging (storage, online gaming) moderately inexpensive

Got to say I own all 3 consoles (xbox, ps3, wii) and I have found graphics not to be such a high priority on the list. I find myself playing the Wii more often than my PS3 or Xbox now. For myself the repeat cycle of shooters they have with no real earth shattering changes or the sports games that just seem to be the same thing over and over with just better graphics has lost its appeal to me. Now that is just my opinion and what I feel. Everyone is going to be different on what they want.
Dismissing a console that btw is hard to find still in lots of markets because it is not leading edge graphics and what you call limited game selection is just an opinion just as what I stated above. Apparently if it is selling as many units as it has just means they appeal to a much wider market than the "I got to have the latest graphics" market. They hit several things that Sony and Microsoft didn't. They appeal to parents, they are priced more reasonably, they are appealing to much wider range of ages and biggest of all they added a new twist to the market with how you control some games now.
BTW they do have online gaming. It is just not Nintendo supplying the theater for where it needs to be done.
Can't wait to see how some of the tone may change on online gaming if ISP's go to bandwidth usage pricing. By no means am I a fan of Comcast either but for now they fill my need and should someone else come along that can do the same or better for cheaper, less privacy invasion, stick with net neutrality, and keep the outages down I am going to have to stay with them.

1 edit | Re: Kindred spirits said by raptor1418 :You must be a PS3 or Xbox fan boy!! Yes, the PS3 is my favorite but...
I am far from any kind of fanboy. I've been a hardcore gamer since the xmas that I got my Atari 2600 and owned a majority of the consoles since...certainly every console since the NES (ok, no virtual boy). PS3, XBOX 360 and Wii all are hooked up to various TVs around the house and the only dormant system ATM is the 360 =P
I'm proud to say I'm 38 on Thursday and still play videogames almost every day.
I'll give you the crappy library is an opinion, but so is its sister crappy channel lineup. If you want to watch shopping or religious programs all day, then Comcast is certainly the best bet.
However, Wii's last-gen graphics is a fact. I agree, it's not all about the graphics in games but better graphics is better graphics. Wanna pay $60 to play Bio Shock on Wii?
Interesting side note:
I refuse to play the Wii because I hate the controller. I didn't even play Zelda and I was a HUGE Zelda fan back in the day.

By no means am I a fan of Comcast either but for now they fill my need and should someone else come along that can do the same or better for cheaper, less privacy invasion, stick with net neutrality, and keep the outages down I am going to have to stay with them. The Wii has a GARBAGE game library period. You cannot see that fact because you are a CASUAL gamer. A very casual one that probably barely knows what a game is much less the companies history of game making, the games of high quality and replay values and competitiveness.
Here is a list of TOP quality games via because of outstanding single player, multi-player, or just ridiculous replay value. These are known as the Kings of Kings. There are many top B quality or C quality games. All games here are A or higher.
Games:
Half Life 2 Ninja Gaiden Ninja Gaiden 2 Quake 3 Unreal Tournament 2004 Metal Gear series Grand Theft Auto 3 Grand Theft Auto 4 Guitar Hero 2 Guitar Hero 3 Final Fantasy series(most of them) The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Mario 64 Mario Galaxy Virtua Fighter series(most recently 5) Resident Evil 4 Super Smash Bros series Halo series World of Warcraft Diablo series
If any of these names here even sounds remotely unfamiliar you are by far a ridiculously casual gamer. I find your statement nothing less than ridiculous. None of the three Wii top titles really have any outstanding replay value to make you play them more than the list on either of the other two consoles.
Just to give you a brief comparison of games that are must play on the 360:
Grand Theft Auto 4 The Orange Box Bioshock Call of Duty 4 Oblivion Gears of War Halo 3 Guitar Hero games Mass Effect Virtua Fighter 5 Project Gotham Racing Unreal Tournament 3
THIS IS OF THE TOP OF MY HEAD. There are plenty more games worth playing but these are the top titles coming to my head. Not to mention there are plenty of good xbox live arcade titles and more coming like Banjo Kazooie, Geometry Wars 2, Street Fighter HD, and many more.
The Wii:
Super Mario Galaxy Metroid Prime 3 Zelda:Twilight princess(very debatable) POSSIBLY Mario Kart Wii(I played the GameCube version and that was trash compared to the N64 so this one is just in the maybe pile as that left me with a bad taste in my mouth). Super Smash Bros.(I have yet to see how it compares to the older ones)
So there are really only 2 games with some arguable ones in the Wii games.
So you are telling me you somehow are clocking a minimum of 20hrs a week on two single games? Damn that is some sick ass replay value for 2 games.
I could beat Mario in less than that in a week and the same goes for the other. Now how I could keep playing those titles every week and doing it for 20hrs a week is just an impossible feat. What do they have to allow such replay value? I can see this on the 360 with COD4(although a highly uncompetitive game), Halo 3, and UT3.
There are casual and hardcore gamers, the hardcore gamers know what is good and what to play. The casual players can't even figure out how to aim in a game by the time they take a break. If you play games 2 mins a week, I can possibly see the Wii fitting your needs perfectly. If you actually like games and love to enjoy them like a good movie then you cannot argue that the Wii is a better choice.
The Wii and the other consoles have very different target audiences. The Wii targets mainly old ass people of around 65 and up along with very young kids around 2-10yrs of age. That is not to say there are absolutely no titles that fit other gamers who are more avid as I did list them earlier in the post although they were a handful.

By the way, a few people only buy the PS3 for a cheap Blu-Ray player. The Wii is too casual for me. Casual gamers are driving the sales figures for Wii. Casual gamers don't buy much software, certainly not many games. All the commercials for Wii games I see on TV are for crap like Wii fit.
For instance, my parents have a Wii. They are both in their late 50's/early 60's. They don't buy Wii games, instead they play bowling over and over. Hell, my dad couldn't make it out of the room you initially spawn in at the very beginning of Bio Shock and he's been failing at playing FPS games since Spear of Destiny. This is the demographics Nintendo is courting. Hence the crappy Wii game library.
No matter how many Wiis Nintendo sells, it will never be a hardcore gamer's main box. Never. Show me a hardcore gamer that says Wii is his/her main box and I'll show you a clueless casual gamer.

| Re: Kindred spirits The issue with the Wii library is not due to the demographics but the Nintendo's questionable licensing policies. The Wii does have an incredibly crappy software lineup (take a look at the DS as well). It does have some redeeming qualities: The Nintendo exclusives are good (think Mario Galaxy, Metriod, Mariokart (online play)) and there are some good retro gaming to be had on Virtual Console and I think the console as a whole was innovative/different. Of course, if I want to blast the hell out of someone in an FPS I turn to my Xbox 360 because clearly that isn't where a Wii will shine. Oh and don't crap too much on the Wii Fit - while it is simplistic, it is fun to a degree and is likely to get a few more years out of 50+ crowd that would otherwise be holed up in their easy chair. | |
