Comcast and Panasonic have unveiled a portable DVR unit dubbed the AnyPlay P-DVR (the TZ-LC100, if you'd like to use Panasonic lingo). Outfitted with "Tru2way" technology, it's obviously a way to promote the industry's new standard.

The device has an 8.5-inch screen and can record up to 60 hours of video and plays DVDs and CDs. The P-DVR connects to a docking station that acts as the traditional cable box, allowing roaming access to VOD and other content.

Comcast says they'll be leasing the device to consumers but have yet to reveal pricing. It has a CableCARD slot, so it could be used across multiple vendors. It should emerge sometime in 2009, according to the cable giant.

Bad idea.......

Content providers aren't going to be happy about the 'roaming' aspect of a device like this until rights can be protected and guaranteed.

Recently HBO/Cinemax blocked transfer of their content to a similar device for the Dish Network.

Recently, Dish Network changed their anti-piracy software on their DVRs to disable transfer of HBO and Cinemax programing. The software glitch causes the transfer process to hang and will not move the programs rendering it impossible to watch HBO or Cinemax programs on your PocketDish.

Roaming isn't an issue.. you're talking about being able to pick up the device and move it from the home, to your hotel room, to a friends house, etc. There is nothing wrong with that at all.. it's no different that recording a VHS tape and taking it a friends, or taking your DVD movie you purchased to a friends, etc...

Technically, the TIVO can roam.. there is no physical location requirement to a DVR.

Dish network has a nicer implementation of this

The Dish Network has a device from Archos that trumps the Panasonic device. It is called the PocketDish and does the same thing more elegantly.
The PocketDish uses a USB 2.0 connection to transfer data and is lighter and more portable.

Both the Comcast and the Dish devices ONLY do SD recordings. No HD.

And the Comcast device won't be out until 2009 sometime, while the PocketDish is available now for Dish satellite users.
»en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archos#PocketDish
DISH Network Corporation, which owns 19% of Archos, sold Archos PVPs under the PocketDish brand. There were three versions, the AV700E (AV700), AV500 (AV500), and the AV402E (Gmini 402). While the original products are no longer available, on December 18 Dish Network released info on a new similar deal with the current generation 605 WiFi and 705 WiFi, allowing high speed transfers to the devices from their current HD receivers.

Recently, Dish Network changed their anti-piracy software on their DVRs to disable transfer of HBO and Cinemax programing. The software glitch causes the transfer process to hang and will not move the programs rendering it impossible to watch HBO or Cinemax programs on your PocketDish.

Re: Dish network has a nicer implementation of this

The thing is pocket dish can only be used with E*. With CableCard (and later the SDV adapter), it looks like any cable subscriber, not just Comcast subs, could use this.

I like the idea for traveling. I wonder how long the batts if available would last. It looks like they're only talking 12V portability in the article.

yeah, thank you, i was wondering why anyone would consider a "TV-only" device that seems to just be a laptop with limited functionality.

Cable's Portable DVR

Comcast (and the cable industry) will never get "it" (the user experience). Comcast is not a company with superior technology (or vision) and never will be.

A note to Comcast and other cable execs:

Get this through your thick skulls -- content that can be stored and moved around on our existing (and versatile) desktop, laptop and mobile PC devices is the future -- not content on goofy-looking, limited, proprietary, cable company devices.

For starters, we want to make use of those existing HD computer displays for which we've already paid -- not buy or rent more new boxes and displays we don't really need. In addition to portability on our own devices, sensible and familiar, yet engaging software interfaces also are essential. You just don't do user interfaces very well (and we don't want to waste time on an inferior interface anyway), so give it up and leave this to the experts at Apple.

Finally, it's not merely about portability for TV shows and movies you morons. What about our family photos and home movies? What about our personal music collection? What about Web surfing?

So, give this stuff up and get with the program or get out of the way. Like the music labels, the time for your 20th Century business model has passed.

Re: Cable's Portable DVR

That's what I keep wondering. What can all of these new devices accomplish that a laptop cannot? I guess the attraction must be ease of use for the 200 million + troglodytes still inhabiting this country.

Service wont last....

Heres the problem.... People RENT DVRs, people RENT cable modems. If it breaks down or stops working, you simply take it into the office for a new one.

If the portable DVR stops working, no problem, swap it out.

HOWEVER... this is a portable device, the chances of the customer breaking it by dropping it or getting it wet SKYROCKET! Given the current nature of CSRs disclosure at the time of sign up, most customers will be BLISSFULLY unaware that if they break it, they buy it.
