Peacock Viacom deal

There has to be a lot more to this deal. Viacom owns PlutoTV which is probably the most popular of the ad supported OTT channels. So Peacock will be the direct competition. Maybe Viacom is just in a cash flow situation with the CBS merger and various other purchases (over extended?)? Maybe this is part of the deal they made with Comcast to make sure they carried the Viacom channels on their cable TV systems. With both Charter and Comcast now offering their TV packages OTT without a traditional cable TV subscription (their internet subscription is required), maybe it is tied into that somehow.

To me it looks like both Charter and Comcast are preparing to shut down traditional cable. They are facing ATSC 3.0 and ever increasing demand for internet bandwidth. So shutting down traditional cable would open up a tremendous amount of bandwidth. I would suspect a four to seven year time frame. IF they consider 3.0 a threat they will want to make their transition before the ATSC 1.0 simulcast requirement drops (at that time 3.0 will essentially double its available bandwidth/channel #s). With the constant growth of internet bandwidth consumption they are also going to be incredible tight on internet bandwidth.

Virtual MVPDs Are Suffering the Same Fate as Traditional Cable

»www.wsj.com/articles/you ··· tst_pos5

"Alphabet Chief Financial Officer Ruth Porat noted that the subscription end of the YouTube business has “higher content-acquisition-cost ratios.”

...the company also is facing an unprecedented slowdown in its advertising business, due mostly to the effects of the pandemic. Analysts are projecting advertising revenue to grow less than 1% this year after averaging 18% annual growth over the last five years. Not a great time to be losing money on SpongeBob."
