Comcast Remote Storage DVR Coming to Boston 'Very Soon'
After a significant amount of testing, Comcast is preparing to launch a cloud-storage DVR in the Boston-area market. The remote storage DVR (aka RS-DVR) follows the same principles as the one launched by Cablevision several years ago after a successful legal battle against broadcasters, who claimed such technology violated copyright. Comcast SVP and GM of Video Services Matt Strauss tells Fierce Cable the launch should be "very soon." Comcast also plans to test a technology that will let users start primetime programs over from the beginning (like Time Warner Cable's creatively named "Start Over") during the Olympics in the Boston, Philadelphia, Providence, Atlantic City and New York markets.

Comcast is also making avail to X1 STB users live streaming feeds direct to the TV of every Olympic event live thru the use of a TV STB based X1 app. Comcast may actually be taking seriously the threats from DirecTV & Dish to keeping their TV subscribers.

Yes, I have been seeing the ads for the Olympics steaming. My wife and I will be taking advantage of that with our X1. The TV scene is definitely changing. The Cablecos are bleeding subscribers by the hundreds of thousands. Then you have start ups like FilmonTV and Aereo taking bites out of the subscriber base, eventually the TV moguls are going to have to change with the times.

New Customers Only

Offer valid for new customers only, minimum two year contract required, early termination and installation fees apply.

Typical for Comcast, treat new customers like gold but treat existing customers like scum. Which is why I have my TV with DirecTV.

There is a saying, make new friends but keep the old, one is silver and one is gold.

Not true. Avail for existing customers; no contract needed; no ETF. There is an install fee and there is no self install option available due to external filter on cable line needed.

Re: X1 Cloud DVR

Any details on the specifics? How many "tuners"? Costs? If you currently have a DVR(s), what happens to those? Do you still have to have a DVR box in your home, in order to have the service, or can you switch to just HD/SD boxes? Etc...........

5 tuners usable, 4 recording, 1 watching. No additional cost more than if you have a DVR now on your account. Yes you need the new X1 DVR which will replace your old DVR. Any other STB in house will be replaced by an x1 slave box which can watch recordings from the x1 DVR box. The slave box can also watch regular channels without communicating with the x1 DVR.

More info on x1 platform

I ordered on a Monday; it was installed that Thursday. No additional monthly cost for the x1 DVR and 1 slave box that replaced 1 HD DVR and 1 HD non-DVR box. There was a one time $30 install charge for about 2 hrs install by a Comcast tech - not a contractor.

Re: X1 Cloud DVR

Thanks for the information. I already have the X1 service, and Anyroom DVR service. My questions were in regard to, this topic, and the X1 CLOUD DVR service, not the regular X1 service.

Re: so when the cable is out..

This X1 thing seems a bit weird. Cablevisions RS-DVR works with existing equipment... then again Cablevision still can't get a decent GUI on their set top boxes and they are still pretty damn slow.

DVR pushing recording to cloud?

Does anyone know if the cloud recording REALLY comes from the home DVR? Or is Comcast just making a copy of their own on their servers to send back to us? Why this matters: if my cable were to go out briefly (or longer), would my cloud recording have the same breakups, or would I still get a nice clean recording?
