Comcast Takes Control Of Some Insight Territories Customers in Illinois and Indiana change hands As expected after last April's announcement, Comcast today took control of networks belonging to Insight Communications in the Midwest. Comcast now owns the networks serving Illinois customers in Rockford/Dixon, Quincy/Macomb, Springfield, Peoria and Champaign/Urbana, and Indiana customers in Bloomington, Anderson, and Lafayette/Kokomo. These networks pass about 1.2 million homes, with 696,000 basic video subscribers served. Insight's remaining networks are largely in Kentucky (Louisville, Lexington, Bowling Green and Covington), though they also still serve customers in Evansville, Indiana and Columbus, Ohio. Insight's remaining network passes approximately 1.3 million homes and includes 665,800 basic video customers. Insight customers switching over to Comcast today won't notice much of a change at first. The companies' billing systems are expected to be changed over in February, and e-mail address changes won't happen for several months. Insight owners The Carlyle Group had considered selling the remaining half of the network, but their asking price had been too high for possible suitors like Time Warner Cable. Meanwhile, Comcast may not be making any more deals for a while. Last month the FCC voted to can cable operators from owning 30% or more of the pay TV market (Comcast currently sits at around 27%).

We didn't see any speed increases for a very long time while other local markets (eg Time Warner and Cox) saw huge speed increases. And even when speed increases were finally implemented, we didn't get the same speeds as CATV customers despite paying the new 30-50% non-CATV penalty (eg, we got 4Mb when everyone else got 6Mb). Additionally, in my market, a former MediaOne market, we saw our upload speeds cut from 300kbps to 256kbps and our usenet service cut from unlimited use to 1GB/mo. And when non-CATV customers finally saw the 8Mb tier, LONG after everyone else, Comcast had raised the price to a whopping $71/mo ($67.95+$3 modem rental) while CATV customers paid $56. Video saw similar titanic price increases while channels were moved onto other "premier" tiers.
When Time Warner took over the 8mb non-CATV HSI price dropped from Comcast's $71/mo to $54.95/mo plus we got back unlimited usenet and nastygram free service. And since then Time Warner has doubled download speeds and tripled upload speeds, while still offering the no "phantom" caps service. | |

My internet IP is still dhcp.insightbb.com. And the software running the DVR cable box doesn't look anything like what I've seen in previous related Comcast forum postings. You would have thought that switching the cable boxes over and the network IP's would have been something that would have been done right out the gate.
Everyone will be confused as to owns their business if branding changes etc aren't apparent. Nothing new for the common way of doing business. Not a very well thought out transition. There is a big difference between changes are coming gradual and seeing no sign at all of an ownership transition.

You'd think that would be enough time to plan for a smooth transition. Oh well, I'm not sweating it. I'm not in any hurry to fall under the Comcast cash cow. I'm not in any hurry to hear about my neighbors approaching the invisible caps or having bit torrent usage being messed with by Sandvine. The only thing I would like to see is more HD channels (even though I haven't bought one yet). I'd also like to see a better DVR and get rid of the crappy software Insight uses. | |

| | Customers screwed Now that Comcast has taken over Insight, the customers will see an increase in price and speed, but also they are going to find out that Comcast has an unknown bandwidth limitation that if they go over it, they will be threatened with termination and will face an uphill battle in trying to find out what is going on, who to talk to, and get no answers.
