Comcast Techs Save 88-Year-Old From Burning Home
Traditionally bad press recently turns to good press...
by Karl Bode Thursday 05-Feb-2009 tags: business · cable · Comcast
Sure, Comcast has been in the news a lot for falling asleep, murder, digging in the wrong yard, blowing up laptops, dishwashers and homes (with people in them), driving vans into children, and even kitten torture. But lately, the carrier's employees and subcontractors have been in the news a lot for saving lives. Back in December, a Comcast tech saved six people from a burning apartment building. This week, two more Comcast techs are in the news for saving an 88-year-old woman from her burning home. Nice work, Tom Masciulli and Jim MacConnell.

Imagine...

Getting up. Going to work today. A day that's supposed to be like any other day. And on a moments notice you're called upon to do something much bigger. To save a persons life while
risking your own in the process. And, without a moments hesitation, you do it. There are a lot of people in this world that wouldn't do that. But there are two that did.
And an 88 year old woman alive today because of it.

I'd say that Comcast is lucky to have them around. As is the community they work in.

Lol, that what I was thinking.. Company's screw up a lot these days.. Unless they see $$ on other actions.

Re: Imagine...

Well, unless these techs are willing to star in a Comcast commercial portraying the company as first responders, an isp, and all about grandious, then I'd say they are probably waiting in a long line.. Probably 600,000 long called unemployment.

This story has almost brought tears to my eyes Imagine that. I had lost all faith in Comcast but these 2 guys who saved the man have shown me that Comcast cares. Its not everyday that you hear of people helping people out. We live in sad times but stories like this what makes America great.

Hell, knowing Comcast's record, they probably started the fire in the first place.

And if comcast fires / reprimands

And if comcast fires / reprimands the techs like other cables have then the full community should drop comcast out spite.

Now, if telcos/cable trained techs in First-response or EMT, then kudos.

I'm just surprised "any" tech takes the initiative to do something beyond their ability. When I read this, I am happy and sad (as you know there are others that will make that good news disappear quite fast...sleeping on the job, stealing, stalking, inappropriate behavior, soliciting, and then there are the sue-happy ones...).

I have to agree with this statement.

Too many people don't want to get involved because of the chance they might get sued. Seen it happen many times when someone attempts to help someone else out only to get sued later or get hurt by the person they are trying to help. Even if the lawsuit is thrown out, you still have legal fees to pay.

I've never heard of a Comcast or any other cable/telco company firing someone for doing something like this.

Service?

I wonder if Comcast will bill the folks full cost for their cable boxes as well as overtime for the techs to rescue the woman?

To be fair, comcast has done the same thing, however, they did later, after public pressure, back down from it.

I still do believe, however, that customers are responsible to insure their property and anything they have taken responsibility for - natural disaster or not. If they insured their homes or rentals and something happens, should they only cover their own property and not the stuff they have signed responsibility for? .. or just get paid on their own?

I'm on the fence if charging a customer for damaged equipment is proper or not.. but if you own the home, and have insurance, (or renters insurance) and even in disaster, I think you should be responsible to pay the provider back. I was always raised that you take care of others before you take care of yourself.. ie: If I had property that belonged to someone else, I take care of them before I take care of my own.

While I agree they should pay for the equipment, the issue was ATT and Dish didn't want to wait for the money from insurance. Here is the article from DSLReports back on October 26th, 2007.

»AT&T Tells Us WildFire Couple Won't Pay

quote:
Earlier today we reported that a California couple, left homeless by the Southern California wildfires, called AT&T to cancel their bundled satellite TV and phone service, and were told they'd be charged $300 for failing to save their Dish Network receiver. They also weren't allowed to defer the bill until they got insurance coverage.

I have no problem with paying a cable or dish service for their equipment when it is destroyed by fire but give it time for insurance to kick in.

Wow.

Sure, Karl could print a simple unbiased piece congratulating the Comcast Techs for saving the woman, but instead he still manages to find a way to blast Comcast in the process.

Way to be objective, big guy!

Re: Wow.

Yea.. becuase while he went out of his way to perform the final call of the 12 days of Comcast mess-ups, he must have only been on the "second day of Comcast good deeds"... he forgot about the drowning save, the I-35 bridge efforts, and several other times Comcast has been in the news too.

Karl, sometimes it's okay to let go of the bullshit and simply focus on something good. Your need to dig up all the dirt in order to praise the good deed really does show major bias.

.. own up.

comcast

I day before i get service from comcast (leaving Verizon) i read this article and see the word murder. What up with that!

It is good that someone was able to save people from a burning building, even if it is a comcast tech

Nice

Many utility companies do provide some training in basic life saving for their outside plant staff. Back in the Bell System days the company even had an annual award (Vail?) for such actions. Even if you feel the companies themselves are pure evil, there are still plenty of decent, hard working, average folks who work for them and do the right thing in an emergency. Nice to see this acknowledged, even if it was in a backhanded way.

...becuase you say so I guess.

You don't think the local press that showed up there to cover the story just might have something to do with it, don't you?

.. of course not. What next? .. you going to say that Comcast started the fire at the scheduled job and told the tech to run into the burning building?

Pardon me while I got put on my tall rubber boots.

Its easy to say things like "clearly this is nothing more than Comcast marketing.." (snip) so if it's so clear, please point to the overwhelming evidence that makes it so.

That is a possibility, comcast tech are known for clumsy drilling... this story is a coverup haha
really bad job...
Just think how bad their public rating would be if the truth is let out instead of this lies perpetrated on the american public... no one would want to bother with comcast due to poor and clumsy installation.
