Comcast is Still Charging Some Modem Owners a Rental Fee

For years Comcast has had a nasty habit of charging some of its customers a modem rental fee -- even after the customer buys their own modem. Our forums are consistently filled with more than a few complaints by users saying that getting Comcast to stop charging rental fees for owned equipment can take months or longer, just one small reason that Comcast has the worst satisfaction ratings of any company in the United States.

With Comcast's modem rental fee recently bumped to $10 a month, complaints about errant charging of rental fees appears to have increased as well. A user over at Reddit notes that with the hike, Comcast's billing system apparently decided he was (once again) a modem renter:
quote:
I am (without choice) a Comcast Xfinity customer. I own my own modem. Late last year, I received a form letter from them notifying me that they had noticed that I wasn't being billed for the modem they claimed they were renting to me. An hour-long phone call with four representatives later, and the $8 charge had been removed credited to my account. However, it seems that since they increased the modem rental fee to $10 per month, they've brought my modem back into their flock.
It's not really a complaint unique to Reddit users either, and there's a thread here discussing the best way to get the charges corrected. In short, if you rent a modem take some time and buy yourself your own modem (Comcast makes an estimated $300 million per quarter from these fees). If you own your modem, keep a close eye on your Comcast bill to make sure Comcast isn't taking any more of your money than they absolutely need to.

Really news?

I realize this is a big problem with Comcast, and I have personally been bitten by these "re-appearing" fees more than once. But is the fact that Comcast is "still" doing this even news? I'd rather see an article about Comcast succeeding in not charging bogus fees; that would be news.
