Competitors claim speedier connection isn't in demand.

The fastest residential Internet service in the country is available in parts of the Lehigh Valley. RCN Corp. has begun offering Internet service with a download speed of 7 megabytes per second, ratcheting up the level of competition among Internet service providers and widening the digital divide between the haves and have-nots of high-speed Internet access. By comparison, the fastest download speed from Service Electric Cable TV & Communications, RCN's primary local rival, is 3.5 mbps. The fastest from Blue Ridge Communications, the cable company serving the northern portion of the greater Lehigh Valley, is 3 mbps. And a digital subscriber line, or DSL, from telephone companies Verizon and AT&T tops out at 1.5 mbps. RCN's one-upmanship has left its competitors arguing that most residential Internet customers don't need the extra speed. RCN, of Princeton, N.J., operates in some of the biggest U.S. markets, such as New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, and launched MegaModem Mach 7 nationwide earlier this month.

Customers of RCN's premium service, which costs $51.65, were automatically upgraded from the 5 mbps to 7 mbps service at no extra cost. Similarly, those with standard service, which costs about $10 less, were bumped up from 3 mbps to 5 mbps service. The new speeds are available to just over half of 175,000 homes within RCN's Lehigh Valley footprint — those that have access to two-way high-speed Internet service. Those with one-way service, which requires a phone line for uploading, will see no change. Although incremental, the difference between 7 mbps and 5 mbps is magnified when large amounts of data are downloaded. It shaves two seconds off the five-second download time of the typical pop song and two minutes off the five-minute download time of Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell video game. For less data-intensive activities, such as Web surfing and e-mail, the extra speed is virtually imperceptible.

Yeah right, but what about where it counts...

Funny, they didn't mention the potential 280MB download for XP SP2! Or for that matter, all the myriad of sequential updates MS can throw out during a week.

I agree, for surfing, it doesn't do a hill of beans. For those of us having a need to transfer entire CD ISO images to or from work, or other projects, will see the real benefit and in a huge way. And let's face it, of course the underdogs will say that. It's the same for cars and HP. Bigger is better. People are gonna go for the higher speed given the choice. Simple. I just hope it works for RCN long term. If they can stay the leader through CH.11, and stay ahead, it will gain customers. If the competition trumps them first (probably not likely, especially with the larger ISPs [think of the infrastructure costs!]), then things might change.

They also failed to mention the 800 up speed. Comes in handy when I need to send some stuff to family members. Gotta keep those family hi-rez pics flowing.

All else equal, who wouldn't take faster? Even those who don't know they don't really need it?!

Besides, Now I have the bragging rights over my two brothers. Is it really important? No. The worth... Priceless! lol

They lie. I signed up for Mach 7 and my speed went down to below 2 mb. Go figure...

Do not poop: for this is a forum, a public place.
I am not a Joe Moe. I do not like BS.

No need to crap on each other. If you have to say something that can help other people, say it.

Read my post on how to deal with RCN and get them to move their ......

Well I would certainly not accept that as normal!

If you're not getting full speed, there's a problem somewhere. Start out with the tweaks area and start a thread in the RCN support topic. We'll help ya out!

For the record, they do NOT lie. People are getting up to 10000 out of their M7. You have a PROBLEM somewhere and it doesn't even have to have anything to do with RCN. There's a lot of things that can kill a network connection.

Diagnose first, place blame later.

Re: Yeah right, but what about where it counts...

RCN agreed that the signal level is too high. They agreed to "optimise" it.
They oversold my node by connecting over 130 users to it.
When I told them that, their first question was: how did you find out?
It means that they count on the average Joe Moe customer level of knowledge. They were off guard...

Now they promice to look into that matter.

They do lie. I am their customer since they came to my area.

Unfortunately for RCN knowledge is power. Before I make complaints, I do check the signal level, the noise level, the speed via NTTP, FTP, etc.

In the past they use to tell which site to use for a speed test. Last week they told me use use RCN site to measure my speed!!!
I simply ask them to get me somebody else who is more qualified. No need to be rude with them because they have guidelines to follow. Senior Management at RCN stinks big time.
It will be is very sad if they ever go under.

They have a good price for a reasonably good package.

If I am a Mandrake user without any urge to get updated by Microsoft, it doesn't mean that I do not want a high speed connection. I do not mind to videophone my relatives in LA...
