Con Men Scam Verizon UK
Pretend to be cops in UK data center heist
by Karl Bode Friday 14-Dec-2007 tags: business · world · Oddities
According to the Evening Standard, robbers stole £1million worth of computer equipment from a Verizon UK data center by pretending they were the police. The men, dressed up as law enforcement officers (and even wielding a K9 unit) convinced data center security they were after criminals on the roof. Five members of the security staff were then tied up as the criminals made off with the equipment. Says Scotland Yard:

"Police are appealing for witnesses and information following a burglary at a telecommunications centre on Thursday. Local officers were called by a member of staff at 10.06pm to the business premises in St Pancras Way. At this stage, it is believed that three to five male suspects, dressed as police officers, gained entry to the property at about 9pm by claiming to a member of staff they were investigating reports of people on the roof of the building. Five members of staff were tied up while the burglary took place. They were two women in their twenties and thirties and three men aged between 40 and 50."

Re: Nice!

That was my thought too. But also add in identity theft.

Re: to buy

I wonder if this wasn't done specifically to support some big spammer/phisher/hacker group.

I don't see that happening. Going outside is kryptonite to those kinds of folks.

Re: to buy

I didn't say done by them, but for them. Given how criminal organizations have taken to running that kind of stuff, especially overseas, it's certainly a possibility.

I highly doubt it. First if they stole a specific peice of equipment, everyone who worked there recently would be interviewed by the police.

Also I'm sure there were probably a dozen security cameras in building that saw them, plus the dozens that are outside the building because the UK is full of security cameras.

Re: to buy

You lost me on why any of that would mean the stuff wasn't stolen for the reason I suggested as a possibility.

Verizon UK??

Verizon UK?? WTF? I thought they were Vodafone over there.

Re: Verizon UK??

No.

Verizon Wireless just happens to be owned by Verizon and Vodafone (although I believe either company is looking to buy each other's stake out). Verizon UK has nothing at all to do with Vodafone.
