Court Again Rules Ad-Skipping DVR Doesn't Violate Copyright
If at first you don't succeed, try again. And again. And then again for good measure. Feeling bolstered by the Supreme Court ruling against Aereo, Fox recently took another legal shot at trying to argue that Dish's "Hopper" automatic ad-skipping DVR violates copyright. That's something the courts haven't been buying, both in a ruling back in July, and again today in a tentative ruling that found Dish didn't violate FOX copyright, but may have been guilty of breach of contract.

Skipping ads. . . . .

This doesn't happen the day they air which would be useless to me. you have to wait 72 hours.

BUT...the 72 hour wait ONLY affects the "auto-hop" feature - you can still very much freely (30-sec) skip through all the commercials immediately after it's DVR'd, so it's really NO different than any other (non-auto-hop) channel you DVR today.

No big loss & FWIW, I should be so lucky to watch shows 3 days after they originally air...that's why they make 2TB DVR's.

BeyondTV. Give it less than an hour depending on your processor and it will highlight/cut out the commercials for your skipping pleasure.

I just push Fast Forward

I don't watch network programming. I watch cable network programming. So that makes the Hopper useless anyways.

Only ABC (currently) has a 72-hour waiting period. The other three networks are "hop-able" the following morning.

Funny thing is I had a Proscan VCR that auto skipped ads and I never remember seeing that make news stories. In fact lots of VCRs had automatical ad skipping near the end of the life for the format.

Who cares?

No one watches Fox's crappy shows, anyway, so what difference does it make if they don't see the ads?

It's the same for ABC now...guarantee you that CBS & NBC will probably get the same concessions at contract renewal time w/DISH.

Whoops, yeah, people do watch Fox for sports. But their original programming leaves much to be desired.

There are programs that you like But I do not care. I mostly watch CBS programs a couple on ABC and couple on NBC. I watch a lot on the WETV and INSP.

And I'll bet you never skip adds. Even the people at the game have to wait for the adds to finish. I hate that when it is sleeting on my head.

What is ads ad?. On about 75% of my programs I download them to my Tivo. Then I use Videoredo to cut the ads, previews and credits.

I'm still saving...

One day I'll have enough to buy a real Union Pacific train. I'm going to park it next to my Boeing Dreamliner that sits out in front of the hangar with all Northrop Grumman goodies stowed away safely till I get that new aircraft carrier that can hold them all. I saw the commercials, they make them, certainly I can buy them. It's not like they would purposely advertise on a television channel to have biased input on that channels content. right?

Or I might just continue a decades old run of never buying anything because I saw a commercial on television.

Copyright commericials?

When they copyright the broadcast, are the commercials part of that, or just the show? I'm thinking just the show, since commercials are normally inserted by the local provider.

So take that you mooks. You can't make people watch your marketing if they don't want to. Even though DVD's force that stuff at me, at least I can still skip through it, and when that stops working I'll start complaining loudly and often to their advertisers. Why bother complaining to the broadcaster, take it right to the source.

Re: Copyright commericials?

Commercials are from the network, not the local channel. Ford, Proctor & Gamble, etc -- just picking some huge corporations at random -- aren't going to work with our local stations for commercials. Now, out of every (5) commercials, the local station is allowed to insert (1) of their own commercials for a local company (I just made up that 5:1 ratio, but you do see it happen - just no idea about the actual numbers).

I have a Dolby loudness meter at home (don't ask) and it can sense the local inserts, as the Dialnorm parameter tends to swing.

Paid Product Placement

With all the paid product placement that goes on nowadays, who needs easily-skippable commercials anyway?

Dish 'Primetime Anytime' doesn't infringe on broadcasters, judge tentatively rules

Gee also indicated that she was leaning toward Fox in its dispute over Dish's "Anywhere" feature, which lets users access recorded content remotely on IP devices via Sling technology.
