This is the Nth times I see some type of loose number thrown in...
ADSL2+ (both ITU G992.5 and ITU G992.5M, 1Mb and 3.5Mb up, respectively) simply doubles the 1.1Mhz downstream freq of ADSL2 within 9000 feet.
FYI: IIRC ADSL2+ is capable for ~25Mbit down within 1km or 3300ft, around 18Mbit up to 2km or 6500ft, ~12Mbit up to 2,5km or over 8000ft etc. | |

Good for Covad. I honestly don't know much about their network or management, but it seems like they're trying to do this the right way - differentiated services that the incumbents don't generally offer and a network of their own (at least more than most CLEC-types.)

I'd imagine that Covad would plan for that situation. Everyone realizes, I think, that "eventually" fiber will be the way to go. For the vast majority of the country, however, that's years down the road.

ADSL2 bonds two pairs (because usually every house has one live pair and one unused pair running to their home). All this does is lower the line quality problems with long distance, so those close to the CO can get higher speeds and those far away can get speeds better than before. Those really far away are still limited by the laws of physics, so unless a Remote Terminal is put in close by, they are still out of luck. | |

| Re: ADSL2+ so why only 8Mbps? No I believe he's right. All regular ADSL offers here (EU) are up to 8Mbps. I also think that it's 8Mbps of ATM speed, so your actual IP bandwidth might be a bit lower. Not sure about that last part though

I am at 4400 feet from CO and Covad is in the CO as well as Verizon and others (dont know who)
We have RCN fiber to the basement and Time Warner Cable as well available.
RCN is 10MBPS/800k. If Covad did ADSL2+ at 18MBPS or 24MBPS (due to distance I should be in range for one of those 2 options, not sure if 24MBPS can handle 4400 feet, so it could be 18MBPS) I would switch over depending of course on price. Service availability is a definite due to distance.
I was waiting for Verizon FIOS but that doesnt appear to be happening so ADSL2+ seems like a perfect stopgap measure till FIOS gets here or till another product comes into the marketplace. | |
