Gears up to offer 8Mbps ADSL2+ in 8 additional cities
(old news - 05:05PM Thursday Jul 20 2006)
tags: dsl · business · clec
Covad today issued a press release claiming that once their latest network upgrades are complete, the company will operate the largest ADSL2+ network in the nation. The latest buildout, predicted to be completed before the end of the year, covers Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Philadelphia, San Diego and Washington, DC. The company says they've pegged Samsung as their latest build-out partner.

Covad and Earthlink have been offering 8Mbps ADSL2+ to in-range (closer than 5,000 feet to the CO) customers in San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle and Dallas. Both have also been offering Covad's line-powered voice technology, which we profiled in previous reports. Many of the technology's early kinks were worked out between Covad technicians and our forum regulars.

These new announcements have done little to impress investors in an incumbent dominated market. Covad's stock has been dipping in late afternoon trading.

New Jersey BEFORE New York City

We already pay for the power grid to the Statue of Liberty so we should get FIOS before New York City.... Where is the logic in that?

FIOS will probably be too expensive but ADSL2 for 14.99$/month? Sounds good...

Re: New Jersey BEFORE New York City

Exactly where in the Covad press release did you see any reference to ADSL2 for $14.99 per month?

I am a long time user of Covad DSL, and believe me, they don/t offer any service for $14.99 per month.

Damn straight on that one. Here's hoping that maybe, just maybe, thos oe us in the lower tiers might see a price decrease. Or something.

1. It's ADSL2+, not ADSL2.

2. For $14.99/mo the best you will be able to get is 768k/128k ADSL2+...

Stock drop MAY indicate doubts about ROI on investment

»finance.yahoo.com/q?s=DVW
Covad's stock has been dipping in late afternoon trading.
The tech sector today dropped about 2%, so the Covad stock drop may not mean much. On the other hand it might mean that Wall St doubts that Covad's investment in the faster technology will have a good ROI. What Covad does in the next few days may tell more about the reaction to the announcement.

Closer than 5,000 feet to the CO so not very exciting to many, many people.

5k feet - for what speed?
This is the Nth times I see some type of loose number thrown in...
ADSL2+ (both ITU G992.5 and ITU G992.5M, 1Mb and 3.5Mb up, respectively) simply doubles the 1.1Mhz downstream freq of ADSL2 within 9000 feet.
FYI: IIRC ADSL2+ is capable for ~25Mbit down within 1km or 3300ft, around 18Mbit up to 2km or 6500ft, ~12Mbit up to 2,5km or over 8000ft etc.

Ah, I see, thanks. However this 5k still doesn't really make too much sense to me...

Wall Street probably realizes the following:

-Covad is (mis)managed, they are truly full of morons and have no real vision for the future. Briefly after their bankruptcy they got rid of a good portion of mid-level do-nothing management and things actually better (than before the bankruptcy or now).

-Covad is just pretending that they will somehow have perpetual access to copper.

-Even after erasing a pile of debt in their bankruptcy they still just burn cash like crazy.

Why wouldn't they?

Good for Covad. I honestly don't know much about their network or management, but it seems like they're trying to do this the right way - differentiated services that the incumbents don't generally offer and a network of their own (at least more than most CLEC-types.)

Because in Verizon areas, for example, when Fios is installed they often snip the copper connectors to a house.

Ok. Wasn't sure if he was referring to something physical like that or just implying that the Bells would cut off the CLECs after the UNE rules were relaxed (which hasn't and won't happen.)

I'd imagine that Covad would plan for that situation. Everyone realizes, I think, that "eventually" fiber will be the way to go. For the vast majority of the country, however, that's years down the road.

It will happen when VZ rolls out fiber and when ATT is feeding everyone from RTs.

Right and then VZ has to put it back when I will ask for it.

Faster speeds in close...what a crock!

What's really needed is something to increase the reach of 1500/384 service. That would increase the number of customers and provide a benefit needed far more than 8mbps to a limited number of people.

Re: Faster speeds in close...what a crock!

Was thinking along the same lines. They need to figure out a way to get decent speeds at a further distance from the CO (for ADSL/ADSL2/etc).

Well they already can with Remote Terminals, but they cost alot.

ADSL2 bonds two pairs (because usually every house has one live pair and one unused pair running to their home). All this does is lower the line quality problems with long distance, so those close to the CO can get higher speeds and those far away can get speeds better than before. Those really far away are still limited by the laws of physics, so unless a Remote Terminal is put in close by, they are still out of luck.

ADSL2+ so why only 8Mbps?

Standard dsl can offer 8Mbps at it's max, so why offer the same speed that standard dsl is capable of with adsl2+?

ADSL2 bonds two pairs, so those close to the CO can get 24 MB/s and those farther out, it will help lower the line stats so they can get something better than 1.5 MB/s bandwidth. Also DSL is limited to 6 Mb/s download and 768 Kb/s upload.

Re: ADSL2+ so why only 8Mbps?

No I believe he's right. All regular ADSL offers here (EU) are up to 8Mbps. I also think that it's 8Mbps of ATM speed, so your actual IP bandwidth might be a bit lower. Not sure about that last part though

Whatever

This isn't exciting news... correct me if I'm wrong but ADSL2+ still has a 1Mbps upload limit.

Re: Whatever

What sucks is this:

I am at 4400 feet from CO and Covad is in the CO as well as Verizon and others (dont know who)

We have RCN fiber to the basement and Time Warner Cable as well available.

RCN is 10MBPS/800k. If Covad did ADSL2+ at 18MBPS or 24MBPS (due to distance I should be in range for one of those 2 options, not sure if 24MBPS can handle 4400 feet, so it could be 18MBPS) I would switch over depending of course on price. Service availability is a definite due to distance.

I was waiting for Verizon FIOS but that doesnt appear to be happening so ADSL2+ seems like a perfect stopgap measure till FIOS gets here or till another product comes into the marketplace.
