By Timothy RobertsAT&T Corp. is entering the broadband market in California through a partnership with Covad Communications Group Inc. of San Jose. The long-distance company will bundle local, long-distance and DSL (or digital subscriber line) service in one bill in areas of California that are served by SBC Communications Inc., including Greater Sacramento. With the addition of California, AT&T now offers the bundled service in 26 states.
AT&T had fallen behind other telephone companies that offered DSL service. In March it began offering a high-speed dial-up service from Propel Software Corp. that operates at five times the speed of normal dial-up. Now AT&T is entering into the actual broadband market and bundling its services.
"We believe there's pent-up demand from consumers frustrated by the lack of choice in bundled communications and are delighted to offer customers in California a high-quality, simple, convenient and economical package," says Ray Solnik, vice president of strategic markets for AT&T Consumer.
