Cox Backs Off New Meter, Removes Overage References
Language was 'Error' and is Being Removed
by Karl Bode 09:02AM Wednesday Mar 28 2012
Yesterday we noted that Cox Communications customers were being informed -- by way of a new usage meter and graphic on the Cox website -- that they'd ultimately be paying overage charges for exceeding their monthly cap. Cox has informed us that since our original story they've reverted back to the old meter. "Thanks for bringing this to our attention," Cox Director of Media Relations Todd Smith tells Broadband Reports.

"This is an error and the language is being removed from the site. Our policy remains the same, we do not currently charge customers for exceeding bandwidth allowances." Cox did not make it clear how exactly the language was included in the meter by accident, and their statement does not preclude the possibility that they're interested in moving this direction eventually.

Update:I pushed a little harder to try and get Cox to acknowledge whether overages are eventually coming, and you'll see from the statement their particular choice of language is somewhat telling:
quote:
We continue to evaluate service delivery and billing options as the industry and needs of the customer evolve. Cox has generous use allowances and only 3 percent of our customer base goes beyond the use allowance for their tier. We do not currently charge for additional use. We work with our customers to get them in the most appropriate tier.

This was no error. They were trying to sneak it in.

Get real. This was not an error, as Smith tries to make us believe. They were trying to sneak in a policy change and they got caught with their hands in the proverbial cookie jar.

This will reappear - perhaps with better publicity - within 90 days.

Corporations don't move that fast. Maybe, just maybe at Christmastime.

Nightmare

@corpmailsvcs.com
sarsacm/ No no no. They were not trying to "sneak" this in. The page designer just forgot to put a "*" next to the word limit, the referencing notes should of been in a light grey color, against a bright white background, in size 2 font, near the bottom of the page next to the copyright information. /sarcasm

Actually, When I saw the new meter, I simply thought it was an updated way to see what I was doing. Of course I am not paranoid.

"I'll be back......"

Confirmed the language has been changed.

Wow...That was the fastest website update Cox has ever managed. I have been reporting other errors on their site for many many months with no correction. Note, all the links to "Have questions?" below the meter do not point you to the correct info and haven't for quite some time.

I also bet that language will be back after the FAQs also get updated:
»ww2.cox.com/residential/support/···0000000}
quote:
Will I be billed if I exceed these allowances?
Cox does not currently charge you additional fees if you exceed your allowance. If you determine that your Internet data usage will continue to exceed your allowance, we recommend that you consider a Cox High Speed Internet package that more closely matches your use of the service. If you are consistently going over your data usage allowance, you will also benefit from the faster speeds that come with a higher Internet package.

I love how they try to up-sell you to a service level no one actually needs.

Could it be they don't write their own code

Perhaps they purchase this stuff as a package from a vendor just like they purchase traffic shaping equipment and software and this was the vendor's standard "quick tip" and it wasn't caught.

Maybe I'm giving them too much credit but I saw the same thing in the Safari EULA with Windows. Apple had used the EULA for the Mac version of Safari which stated that a single Safari license (while free anyway) could only be installed on a single Mac computer...again this was for the Windows version of Safari. Ooops. After this was pointed out in the media Apple went in and changed it.

Or they could simply be in damage control mode.

Call to Action: Rescind the Caps

We've launched a call to action to see about getting Cox to scrap their other mistake: having usage caps in the first place.

If you are a Cox customer willing to get involved in some public protesting and media involvement, drop me a line at phil (at) stopthecap.com

I wonder if "Stop the Cap" actually works or is just a vent and spam site.

Most definitely not a spam site.

I stop by from time to time for news.
