Cox Brings 50 Mbps To Las Vegas
$119.99 per month for 50/5 Mbps
by Karl Bode Wednesday 09-Dec-2009 tags: bandwidth · cable · Cox HSI
Cox has reached out to us to note that they're launching their faster 50 Mbps downstream 5 Mbps upstream "Ultimate Internet" service in Las Vegas today. The company's faster DOCSIS 3.0 service, already launched in parts of Rhode Island, Arizona, Northern Virginia, and Lafayette, Louisiana, varies by price depending on the level of local competition. In Lafayette, Louisiana -- where Cox competes with a municipally built fiber operation (and symmetrical 10-50 Mbps service), the price for Cox's 50 Mbps has dropped as low as $90 a month.

Click for full size
In Las Vegas, where Cox's most serious competitor is Embarq (now CenturyLink), Cox says the tier will cost $119.99 per month, plus the $99.99 (or less) DOCSIS 3.0 modem.

"Cox Ultimate Internet will give our customers an online experience that allows them to do more, do it faster and perform it more reliably than with any Internet provider in Southern Nevada or anywhere else in our state using a non-fiber delivery system," says Cox Senior VP in Las Vegas Marilyn Burrows. Interestingly, Cox clearly identifies this as not fiber, despite their part in a cable industry marketing effort to confuse customers into thinking that core and last mile fiber are the same thing.

Of course with no major fiber to the home competition in Vegas to speak of, it's not like Cox really has to worry about it. At a special lunchtime press conference outside of the company's Henderson Retail Store, Cox demonstrated the new tier in a race versus a "key local competitor's top-speed of 10 Mbps" (again that's Embarq, for those playing along at home). Cox's statement to the press doesn't indicate who won -- but we'll assume Cox did.

Update: An inside tipster at CenturyLink claims to that the company will be offering ADSL2 in Las Vegas starting later this week, with speeds up to 25 Mbps down and 2 Mbps up.

Wow, what a shock

When faced with competition, the price drops $30 per month

Who would have gussed?

holy bejeezus!

120 bucks?!

I think I would just settle for 10mbps and pay 50 instead. No way I'd pay that much. What a ripoff.

Seems reasonable

Until CenLink goes FTTH (you can't get to 50 Mbps even over bonded ADSL2+, though it's possible with VDSL2, which CenLink doesn't appear to be deploying anywhere) Cox's service will be the fastest in town. So they charge high prices for their premium product, because those who need it will pay for it, and those who don't won't.

I likely wouldn't buy this tier at any point, at least not at that price, but it's nice to have the option available, especially for businesses. 5 Mbps up for less than the price of a T1 has got to be a godsend for many small biz customers, and 50 Mbps down means that those same businesses won't have any bottlenecks in getting data from the web.

Hopefully CenLink steps up and offers some semblance of competition to Cox. It's not a good thing when one company has such a great advantage over the other that they cen price their service at whatever they want just because there's no competition.

There needs to be more UPLOAD at that price point.
10mbps at least.

50Mbps in Las Vegas?

I would hope they'd have 100mbps fiber to everywhere in Las Vegas. I'm surprised that Cox only goes to 50Mbps in the biggest gambling city in the world.

I would be suspecting at least 100mbps anything in Las Vegas.

Well your gunna need a D3 modem, and most likely your gunna get charged for one. Maybe they will give you a discount on one, but your gunna have to get one. Because there is no VOIP/Internet modem that is D3 capable atm.

Im happy this is getting taken care of for him. I just know this doesn't always happen. But whoever he talked to on the phone should of known Cox doesn't carry a D3 VOIP/Internet modem yet.

Well actually the person that told me that my current modem was DOCSIS 3 compatible was my Commercial Account Executive aka Sales Rep via Email not someone on the phone... And he said that he just actually got the info this morning and sorry about the inconvenience and he even said if I get charged for the modem to let him know and will credit me so its being taken care of...

I think he just wants the one of the WAN interface. Anyways, even when you do get a proper modem, hopefully you know most OSes would require a bit of tuning to take full advantage of speed like that, especially over distances. Even Linux can be helped(it has an autotuning stack but it does help for it to default to reasonable parameters for that connection and adjust from there).

Re: haha 500

There you go »www.macgeekery.com/tips/configur···evisited Follow general guidelines for finding the optimal figure for different parameters. It's really very similar to Linux/BSD. You use sysctl to adjust them in OS X, as well.

Re: haha 500

okay I have no idea what my optimal figures would be so have no clue what I would put in the /etc/sysctl.conf file.. and dont know if I would put the same in all my computers

MacBook Pro connected via WiFi
another MacBook Pro connected via WiFi
and a iMac connected via Ethernet.

All connected to a Apple TimeCapsule (1st Gen)

anyway to tune/optimize a PS3 and XBox 360 ?

do speed test from iMac and MacBook Pro get two totally different results so I know MacBook Pro's definately need some tuning

Re: haha 500

I am a HUGE Mac Lover and I am also here in Las Vegas and I had Cox as well. I am currently slumming it with Embarq but so far so good. My Internet was always piss slow going through an Airport Extreme. When I plugged my Mac directly into the modem I would get at least a two fold increase. I don't know what the problem is with the Airport but get another router for wireless. NetGear DIR-655 has worked like a champ for me for quite some time now. I went through three Airport Extremes before I just gave up.

ALmost all modern operating systems have self tuning tcp/ip stacks now, no tuning is necessary unless you're on something older than Tiger/windows xp etc. Your mac book pro may be on wireless g - if you have a lot of other g networks in the area, it may cause it to slow (interference, etc.)? If you haven't done so yet, try the test using ethernet for both of them and then see. Also, I often find out the test to San Jose or LA (from Las Vegas) is faster than the test to Las Vegas --- I try the LV one first, and if its too slow, I'll try the LA or SJ/SF ones.

I can give you tips when I get home(working soon), but you would be best served posting that question, along with a tweak test and speed test to dslr or speedtest.net servers. I don't trust the accuracy of pingtest.net due to some major anamolies in results I have seen. It may have been conditions to their particular servers at various times, but it is still a beta and dslr's server is further from me than most of theirs in the US, and still more consistent. Same is true of my private server on another ISP. The formula is generally ping vs speed vs advertised speed and a little experimentation. Example: your RWIN multiplier. If you're far from advertised on defaults, it may make sense to use a higher Rwin multiplier. Max RWIN is the delay of the furthest servers you use multiplied by bandwidth then an even integer multiplier. Default might be set in UNIX consistent with average ping time. If this doesn't make sense, do post in the broadband tweaks forum. They can help, even if I'm still at work. They are good at what they do.

Cox Tech just came out and installed my DOCSIS 3 modem and now on my iMac went from 20 Mb/s to a little over 50 Mb/s just like suppose too

But on my MacBook went from 5 Mb/s to 20 Mb/s still half of my speed... So need to figure out how to optimize it...

why bother

advertising another overpriced docsis 3 service isn't going to get much interest, alonside the $5/gallon of gasoline. i think customers would rather send internet data by carrier pigeon (dsl) than pay over $100 for internet. Cable companies should THINK about that before going ahead with $100+ 50 megabit and 100 megabit priced (DOWNLOAD) tiers.

Let's get real...

Why the average user needs over 10/1 is beyond me. I have 6000/768 service from DSL Extreme. My average torrent flies along at well over 600 kbps. I can download a 700 meg file in about 1/2 hour. I can watch streaming video just fine. My VOIP works great. I can listen to Internet radio. Let's get real-for the average person these crazy 50/5 speeds are mainly for bragging rights.

By the way, my neighbor has TW Roadrunner 10/1 service (the fastest they offer in Hollywood). Speed tests show her speeds are fine-yet her torrents average less then HALF the speed mine do. She doesn't have newsgroup access (I have). And she pays 13 dollars a month more then I do.

Empty your wallets

So yes I am one of the crazy people who want this kind of download speed. I download video from iTunes like crazy as well as Hulu and Netflix Streaming and other things. So I called Cox up today and was shocked by the cash outlay needed.
I knew the monthly service was high but...

$119.99 a month Ok no problem

$99.99 Docsis 3.0 Modem I was told I could not buy my own. It's $83.99 on Amazon for the Motorola modem

$99.99 Professional Installation This can not be waived! WTF!! The reason I was told is that they have to verify the cable all the way to the house is 1gbps. Ok its your network you don't know this???
I was interested until the 100 bucks for installation. thats ridiculous
