Cox Celebrates First 'G1GABLAST' 1 Gbps Customer in Phoenix

Back in May Cox Communications announced that the company would be launching faster 1 Gbps services. While the company said the majority of the company's footprint wouldn't even begin to see 1 Gbps until sometime in 2016 (when DOCSIS 3.1 sees broader deployment), Cox will start delivering 1 Gbps speeds to some new housing developments in portions of Phoenix, Las Vegas and Omaha well before that.

Earlier this month Cox officially announced that they're launching the 1 Gbps service in Phoenix later this month under the "G1GABLAST" brand. According to the Cox announcement, the service will run users $70 a month -- if bundled with Cox television services.

Like with most recent fiber to the press release announcements of this type, the lion's share of deployment will only happen in high-end housing developments, but the marketing messaging is designed to imply a much larger overall footprint for these next-gen services.

To that end, Cox executives actually visited the home of the first GigaBlast customer in Phoenix last week to hold a small press event.

“The Atlas family is the first of many homes to embrace this ultra-fast Internet and the 'Gig Life' it brings," stated Cox President Pat Esser. "Our pace of investment and innovation will only increase to continue to help business and residential customers connect to the things they care about most."

Unlike the Atlas family, most Cox customers will have to wait at least several years before they see these kinds of speeds.

Sell the sizzle.

It's all about marketing and selling it. Sell the sizzle and not the steak. It works.

I want to ride that train it looks fast.

That's what I thought as it has to use the same road as cars. It looks like it sizzles though.

Re: Sell the sizzle.

The money spent on the train could have bought every rider a car and gas and had enough left over to NOT have to reduce the bus schedule in the rest of the city to pay for the train.

Yes, our Metra trains in the Chicago area can do up 70 mph but average around 30-35mph after factoring each stop.

PR

At least they are trying to be honest about the footprint and 2016 date for the service. I would have used the money spent on the ads to get it to one more neighborhood faster.

Is it just me...

Or isnt this whole Cox PR thing with visiting the family like what North Korea does for propaganda?

Just replace the Cox execs with Kim Jong Un and his entourage.

Yes because we all know that 1 gig service can be installed throughout the US in maybe three days at the most...., right?

Bitching.... the all American pastime.

Re: Is it just me...

I am not suggesting that 1gig service can be deployed as easy as flying a flag.

1gig is a myth for the most part - hell most people cant even get 100mbit speeds unless served by a Cable MSO that can deliver, or FTTH from the telco.

The reason fiber to the press release is a term is due to the habit of talking big, but delivering small. This is an example of that. Lots of big talk, "look at us we gave it to this -typical- american family!" nonsense.

Google's 1gbit deployment is the only one that is remotely meaningful at the moment, all the others are too small to really have any type of impact in their local markets.

Re: Is it just me...

You have to start small in these type of changes. I don't know how you can do it otherwise. There's always a first.... first TV station, first satellite, first internet connection by modem. All these were myths at one time or another.

Google is meaningful because they were in front... you seem to be assuming others won't follow and really that is not proving so.

This piece is nothing more than "look... here is our first... more to come later" Your assumption that the "more to come later" is a lie. I don't think it is and I think we will be migrating to much faster speeds across the country over time.

But really it is amazing that companies that are taking the plunge to invest in these type of things always raises a herd of whiners for their efforts on this site.

Gigablast

Is there not already a Gigablast search engine using the name? »www.gigablast.com I see a lawsuit of name infringement about to happen in the near future.

competition

im assuming the only reason Cox is rolling gigabit service out to these areas is due to real or perceived completion in those markets. Is this correct?

Re: competition

seeing as Google may come to Phoenix stay out in Tempe well I think Cox may be in for some real true competition I'd like to see them beat Google $70 a month for one gigabit without having to buy their cheesy TV serviceit will force them to offer the one gigabit for $70 a month and lower other prices on other plans and also run FTTH in to other places besides they're small so-called large deployment
