Cox Continues to Expand Gigabit Broadband Service

Cox Communications continues to expand the availability of its "Gigablast" gigabit broadband service. A new company announcement notes that Cox has deployed the speedy service in parts of Wichita, Kansas. Like most gigabit announcements these days, the actual availability appears quite limited, the company specifically noting that this faster service is only being made available to select new housing developments.

While these Gigablast deployments are primarily fiber fed to housing developments, the company has promised to deliver gigabit speeds over cable (via DOCSIS 3.1) to the entirety of the Cox customer base. Field trials are ongoing this year, with broad deployment not expected until 2017.

"Cox has always had an evolving and dynamic plan to continue to advance our services to meet the growing demands of our customers," Cox says of the latest expansion. "By bringing gigabit internet speeds to the market, Cox is once again ensuring our technology readiness long into the future."

Cox Gigablast service is currently available in limited parts of 12 states and the company says it will begin deploying cable-based gigabit speeds in all of its markets starting in 2016.

According to Cox, the company continues to upgrade its Premiere and Ultimate high speed Internet packages as well. As of Wednesday, the company says that Cox Ultimate customers will see maximum download speeds increase from 200 Mbps to 300 Mbps, and Premiere customers will go from 100 to 150 Mbps.

What good is it to expand to more markets?

Cox can't even provide Gigabit service to 10% of their customers here in Oklahoma City. It is available in 1 housing edition and 2 apartment complexes. My housing edition is only 10 years old and I can't get it even though there is a billboard advertising it 0.5 miles from my house. My FCC complaint, of course, fell upon deaf ears as Cox basically sent me a "thanks for being a loyal customer, glad we made things right with you" even though they were nowhere near resolving my issue. If AT&T or Google offer Gigabit Service at a reasonable rate here anytime soon, I'm gone.
