Hints at DOCSIS 3.0, deploys 'speed preview'
(old news - 10:32AM Thursday Jun 26 2008)
tags: bandwidth · cable · Cox HSI
Cox today announced that they'll be doubling the speed of their standard "preferred" tier in Northern Virginia from 5Mbps/1Mbps to 10Mbps/2Mbps starting in July. The company says they'll also be increasing the speed of their "Premier" tier by thirty-three percent -- from 15Mbps/2Mbps to 20Mbps/3Mbps. Northern Virginia is one of Cox's most competitive markets thanks to FiOS (Cox 20Mbps generally mirrors FiOS deployment), so as I mentioned yesterday it's the most likely location to first see DOCSIS 3.0 upgrades, which are also referenced in the release:
We're investing in a new technology platform called DOCSIS 3.0, which opens the door to even faster Internet speeds and a broader variety of services that can be offered over cable's broadband network. DOCSIS 3.0 enables us to increase to 70, 100 or 150 Mbps downloads in our fiber-rich plant.
I've also noticed that Cox has deployed their speed preview technology in some of these same markets. The technology lets users take faster tiers for a fifteen day test drive free of charge.

Re: 3rd and inches...

If VZ was smart they'd be doing what Cinci Bell did. Buy a cable company or to. That would expand their offerings faster. able them to have FTTN which they could change with FTTH and not spend out building. Plus they could compete against normally TWC or Cox if they bought an over builder along with ATT. Wouldnt be a problem. Especially since the agreements to provide service are already there for wiring, offering services in the city and network is built.
