You do the math...
hmm 82 bucks for 5 more meg thats not even garanteed? not to mention it doesnt last the whole download... and since the munifi is symmetrical u can upload at 50 meg...
Doesnt seem worth it to me... its a no brainer...

and why only 55? (comcast does Powerboost to 120) maybe related to that song "why I can't drive 55" lol

'Average' user won't make use of it. I do wonder how may people will pay more than double their current bill for a paltry 10% increase for the first few seconds of speed ? Also, would it be noticed ? -- Canada = Hollywood North

1 edit | No brainer.... I was typing the same comment that MalibuMaxx had and he beat me posting it....
Hmmmm.....wonder which one is the better value (and probably more consistent speed-wise than cable's shared architecture)? /sarcasm
Yes, I know it is shared at some point down the pipe, but the shared point on the fiber network is probably a lot further upstream than cable.
I know with my FTTH connection, I can get the same speeds any time of the day, while with Cox it would fluctuate greatly depending on time of day....
|
| | Pricing The major question is what is the last mile deployment of the municipal FTTH.
If it is reaching a larger portion of the Lafayette population Cox must be joking themselves thinking they'll sell any of the 50/5 tier. If, on the other hand, the municipal FTTH only reaches ~2-5% of the total market but Cox has penetrated (... ...) 40-60% of the market then the price discrimination is obviously favorable.

| | Cox First To Put Powerboost On DOCSIS 3.0??? What? What about Comcast? I think someone has their facts wrong. | |

1 edit | Cox DOCSIS 3 speed test in Lafayette I have Cox's DOCSIS 3 in Lafayette. From what I can tell they are only now testing powerboost with it however and I don't believe its actually being deployed to customers yet officially.
Only reason I would even mention it is that it seems to be public knowledge now:
»tinyurl.com/czeg8t
Currently the speeds I am seeing are higher then the 55 that powerboost is suppose to reach. I believe the 55 was based on 10% of the 50Mb/s service, so an extra 5. However the results have been more than that so far. I personally would not expect the results I have seen to be typical since its only suppose to be 55 and from what I have read about powerboost it is really only suppose to be available when extra capacity exists on the network. So its no guarantee or anything obviously.
This was done last night:

But wow whoever goes with Cox over the competition I'm sorry..but is a complete moron.

| | | | Its not available to me for one. And I have no interest in a government run service provider to be honest.
I have and am very happy with Cox. It's been way better than any other service I have had (Dish and DTV, BellSouth/AT&T).
They have been providing everything I need and more for a very long time compared to all the others currently available to me.
I have worked from home a LOT for many years using all while using Cox service, running my VPN router to work, Cisco IP phone, video conferencing and so on. I have rarely have been able to fully utilize all the bandwidth my service is suppose to offer to date.
The new service is just icing on the cake for me. The better upload speeds then the prior service helps on the rare occasion when I am trying to do too much at one time and has been extremely beneficial already.
|
| | | I'd be curious to see what speeds you get if you run the test on the Cox hosted New Orleans speedtest.net server. You can access it directly at »speedtest.no.cox.net.
While the connection is good, the Dallas Speakeasy server is off of the Cox network and you are crossing a NAP.

Those speed tests are wonky, especially when Powerboost is being employed. With DU meter, I was able to see exactly when the Powerboost cut off when using Comcast, and I was able to see real results with actual file transfers.
I explained how I tested my FiOS upload in the link below, but you could use the same applications for downloads.

Gunner join:2004-01-29 Carmel, IN | In other news... Cox execs failed Marketing 101. If you can't compete on speed, then you've got to compete on price there, Cox. You should be selling that 50/5 service for about $45....so you're only about $95 too high; nice work. Honestly, if you're not going to even try, why not just pack it in and call it game over for that market. Probably be more economic than trying to maintain a service than nobody is going to buy.

| | Lafayette Parish - Not just select areas in the city I think too many people see "Lafayette" and simply think of "Lafayette" and thus compare this with the fiber alternative.
Cox's new service is parish (county) wide. It reaches way more then just the city limits of Lafayette. It reaches all the surrounding communities which are the fast growing communities as well.
The LUS FTTH is only just getting off the ground and is only available to a few select pockets of areas in the city only. Most in the city itself have another year or two before they will have the option. As for those in the surrounding areas they may not ever get the option.
