Cox Hires Execs For Wireless Plans
Will launch wireless phone service sometime in 2009
In the recent 700Mhz auction, Cox Communications won 14 Block A and 8 Block B licenses for bids totaling roughly $304 million. Through a joint venture with Sprint and several other cable companies, Cox also spent $2.37 billion to buy 137 AWS licenses. The company has since announced they plan to become a wireless carrier, starting with CDMA/EVDO and eventually making the jump to LTE. The company this week hired two industry execs to help launch the service, which Cox has previously stated should be commercially available sometime this year. Both execs have formerly worked for AT&T or BellSouth.

Might Work?

Given they are going to find it hard to expand this could be viable. Roaming agreements and pricing will be key. I will assume good roaming with Sprint.

I'm going to reserve judgment until we something more concrete at the point when they are actually rolling out the service.

One thing's for sure, it will be interesting to see what Cox does with this. I hope it shakes things up a bit in the wireless market. IMHO the wireless market is sort of stagnant right now. A new player in the wireless market might be good.

Why start EVDO ?

This make no sense at all, Verizon is converting to LTE, starting next year. If anything why build two networks, when you could build one, and save thousands ?

My guess is for the roaming coverage they're going to rely on. LTE won't have a significant national footprint for several years to come. CDMA/EVDO do and will.

Seriously, WTH were they thinking ? CDMA is on its last breath and they decide to use THAT ?!! Hell, good old GSM is a better choice than CDMA !

Stupidity at its best.

Depends on how you define better. GSM may be more globally available (is it anymore?) but CDMA with EVDO tends to provide better throughput.

That isnt a fair comparison. GSM or GPRS, are equal to cdma 1x. But Evdo and Edge are competing products. Either way there are both losers to UMTS. Even EVDO cant compete against UMTS.

Re: Why start EVDO ?

Actually, right now in the US, EVDO is the leading 3G technology.... EDGE can't even compare to EVDO Rev. A. EDGE vs. 1x is more fair.

They could do LTE only, with EVDO fallback, yet build an exclusive LTE network. Matter of fact UMTS, is a few steps away from becoming LTE. It would have been smarter to go UMTS/LTE rather then EVDO/ LTE.

Yeah but their big partner in all this is Sprint, not AT&T or T-Mobile. That means if they want to do something now, it has to be CDMA. I'm not saying I agree with the decision, but why they are doing it this way is pretty obvious.

Anon

Resell EVDO while buildout own system.

I am going to guess resell the EVDO network now to get it up faster then build their own LTE or other system for later.

Regional or National? Some "competitive edge?"

Regional or National?

Well...any somewhat major company sells national plans, even large regional companies like US Cellular or Alltel.

But, you have to live in an area where they provide native service. It's why I can never sign up for an Alltel plan.

I wonder about this since if it's national that means there are more potential users.

"Competitive Edge?"

To be serious they'd have to offer some sort of "competitive edge," to get people to sign up. For example:

US Cellular - Free Incoming Calls

AT&T - Only 3G HSDPA carrier, and has "Unity" plans (very cool if you can get one)

Alltel - MyCircle (I think you can still buy them)

T-Mobile - MyFaves

Sprint - Their all inclusive plan is $100. Some folks have cheap SERO plans, but you have to be one of the cool kids.

VZW - Nothing at all. How did they get so big?

Alltel is NOT fully VZW. You can still signup at Alltel stores and on theire website. they have not merged anything yet except put Alltel customers in the VZW mobile to mobile system. They're just now starting to port people over to the billing system but will NOT be billed by VZW for months to come.
