| This will be interesting to see 25/4 from Cox I wonder if the New England area will be one of the first to go 25/4? I know in Rhode Island they have already upgraded. So now its just time to wait for them to turn up the throttle and give us more speed.

| Was this supposed to be Big News? HD ain't all that. In fact, I see nothing about it that makes me want to run out and drop $$$$$$$ on either an "HD" television or the $$$$$$$$$ HD cable lineup, which consists of the same ol' shit only brought to the subscriber at a jacked up pricetag. Considering the programming that is found on television today, I'd rather watch TV with rabbit ears and tin foil b/c that's about what it's worth. | |

It just so happens that I think it is "all that", and I sprinted out to buy 4 HDTVs over a 2 year span with HDDVRs from both Comcast and Dish on all of em. Additionally, I am impresed that Cox is upgrading their entire system to 1Ghz in addition to SDV and other new things they are implemented.
I think its big news. | |

| Magnavox, 36" LCD HD 1080i, Office Depot - $499.99... those must be SOME Ford Pinto you have.. and that dirt bike.. oh.. ok.. I'll stop and be nice to you.. my point is that HD TVs are available at the same costs as traditional tubes have been. You may not be able to get a 52" or 65" size TV, but you can still get 26", 32" etc for a damn good price these days.
Hint: don't rule out WalMart, OfficeMax/Depot, etc. Sometimes you find good bargains in the least expected places.

| Re: Was this supposed to be Big News? Well, you don't have to help me understand or bash Fry's.... I used to live in Sacramento... it was home to the returns center. Many of the items from around the state would be shipped into Sacramento and had the White Tag on the box.. they allowed anything to come back and just assumed that people made up excuses that something didn't work in order to get a refund. They'd re-shrink wrap it and put it on the shelf not checking it. (Verified fact)
Seriously.. check places that you wouldn't expect.. you'd be amazed what you can find these days.

The only ones sub $1000 are the ones with the red tag which means you pretty much get the display model which has been abused and of course usually has visible picture problems. My car isn't that crappy, maybe it was an exaggeration... but I'm not far off. '91 Integra and '82 Vision. Reliable but old with high mileage. My TV did cost about as much as my car did (a '91 Accord), but that's why I drive an old car, so I can spend the money on things that I find more entertaining.

Oh and we only have 10 HD channels, half of which are SD transmitted via HD.

You posted before that half of your cable bill is included in your rent. So if you add that back in the boxes aren't half...

| nifty Neato. Not that I have an hdtv ...but it is interesting to watch 'hd' on a tube set! Looks good. Actually looks decent compared to the regular local channels that always have some fuzz, color weirdness, or what have you. The Sooners/Mizzou game looked sharp as a tack
Do I just have to call to have all the rest of the 'hd' channels come through? They're supposedly "free" around these parts... and I'd watch 'em, even on my panasonic tube set (sharp for an analog tv). Even comparing regular digital channels to HD, there's a bit of noticeable difference (yes, even on a normal tv)... less pixellation mostly.
As for the whole "sdv" thing, I'm not sold. Sure, it's neat, but it's strange that the channels aren't all being "broadcast" as in standard systems.

4 edits | Not worth it... Not to slam Cox but overpriced TV in general. Cable TV used to be a good deal. But the prices have risen out of control while the quality of channels (and their programming) have gone into the sh!tter.
I ended up just canceling 'pay TV' all together. The few shows on cable I did watch like South Park and BSG are available from other outlets (eg iTunes).
I just don't see anything compelling on pay-TV anymore. I was at a friends house yesterday to watch the network NFL games and we were all talking about it (started with the NFL Network ads telling us to call our evil cable company and insist they fork over zillions for that crap channel). One mentioned the old TechTV and I agreed that it was a perfect example of the direction of cable/DBS television. Comcrap gobbles up TechTV merging it with the completely worthless G4 "TV for Gamers" then fires the TechTV staff and kills the shows (except X-Play). Now when we looked at the listings for G4 yesterday endless and I mean endless hours of crap Ninja shows, Star Trek reruns and paid programming. Out of a 24 hour cycle about 4 hours were dedicated to anything remotely computers and it was X-Play, Cinematech, and Cheaters.
So now not only have TV prices gone up substantially (in my area, about 50% in 5 years), now we just get 150 channels of G4-HDNet type garbage and about 5 channels that are barely worth watching like Sci-Fi and NGC. -- Help keep cable rates low; support "Big Cable" in their fight against the extortionists at the NFL Network!

While I agree regarding the general decline in quality programming, I must be incredibly lucky or something. 5 years ago I was paying $100 a month for all the channels and a digital box. Now I'm paying $110 for all the channels, a digital box, an HD-DVR, and two cable cards.
My overall bill has gone up much more, though, but that's only because the cable company is now also my ISP.

| Is DirecTV another US West? Something in this Cox story caught my eye...
"..who aims to have 100 channels by the end of this month. Of course DirecTV made the decision in 2004 to use all their satellite capacity for HD, not broadband."
Several years back, US West decided to put their effort into DSL and not Cellular service.. a move that ultimately cost US West, now Qwest, out of a market that has LOTS of money in it!
While there are HD fans, it makes me wonder if making the move to HD, rather than better broadband, would be a smart move. There is definitely a desire for HD out there.. but does it outweigh the need for better broadband, ESPECIALLY when better broadband could lead the door to more HD.

| HDTV rules. HDTV rules. I spent about $2K on a 62" DLP a year and a half ago... It was easily worth it. I suscribe to digital cable but the programming I get via clear QAM is good enough for me right now. There is a HUGE difference between HD and SD. My wife's 80 year old grand parents even appriciate its beauty and bought them selves a 1080p 50" Plasma a couple of weeks ago. | |
