Cox Launches 50 Mbps In Connecticut
$99 for 50/5 (55 Mbps with Powerboost)
by Karl Bode Friday 13-Aug-2010 tags: business · bandwidth · cable · Cox HSI
Cox Communications has announced that the company is now offering faster, DOCSIS 3.0 based service to businesses and residential customers in Connecticut. That of course includes the company's fastest Ultimate Internet tier, which offers 50 Mbps downstream (55 Mbps when Powerboost kicks in) and 5 Mbps upstream for $99 a month. According to the Cox press release, the tier comes with three unique IP addresses, 10 e-mail addresses, and 50 hours per month of remote dial access (that last one being something you'll enjoy for less than a month, since Cox is killing off backup dial-up starting in September).

3 IPs is nice

Otherwise the specs are comparable to TWC's 50/5, which is to say, fast on downloads but otherwise unremarkable.

Re: 3 IPs is nice

Ah yes, but does Time Warner Cable offer you eighteen free days of dial-up Internet access?

Re: 3 IPs is nice

Psh, my $5 per month dialup account could eat Cox's lunch any day...though it's only ten hours per month. I can get a local number pretty much anywhere, which Cox, if they're not reselling someone like visp.net (which in turn resells service from a bunch of dialup wholesalers) can't do.

i have my cable modem in an outside transparent vlan on my switch before it flows into my router. this way, i can throw a switchport into the outside vlan and test my vpn on the outside interface or just use it to bypass my router in general (i use it for testing customer sites).

these days the end user normally doesn't notice the negatives of ip sharing via nat routers
but more advanced users often like the simplicity of having a real ip for each computer.

Thats nice feauture, since most people in households are not very technical and don't know how to set up transfer limit on bittorrent (which run by default slow down connection). Most consumer routers don't offer prioritizing bittorrent traffic I think. 3 diffferent ips solve this problem.

no. not at all.
you're still sharing the same docsis carriers. 50/5 is aggregate throughput on the provisioned profile of the modem, regardless of number of ip's in use.

It could come in handy for many things... I am on Premier and was checking my account settings the other day and I discovered that I have 3 IPs to use as well! Would like to set up a personal server just for tinkering around on a separate IP myself....

$99!!! I just signup for 25/25 and Ultimate Cable for $89

I've had Cox for several years now, and while they have deliver good service, the value of what FIOS is offering is just unmatched..

I would consider getting FiOS if Verizon could settle out their various billing issues.

Oh, and if it ever comes to my neighborhood before 2100.

ridiculous

I get 50/50 for less than 60 bucks. I could get 100/100 for those prices! and yes thats 100 mb UPSTREAM not no gay capped upload. LUS FIBER ALL DAY!

Cox tried to run fiber here, but we ran our own city fiber and kicked em out. Glad we did.

Re: ridiculous

kicked them out? LMAO! thats the best comment i've heard! no way in hell did you kick them out. And i'm willing to bet you don't even have 40% of the residents signed up for LUS Fiber.
