Third market to see new 50Mbps/5Mbps tier

Cox Communications gave us a nudge this morning to note that the private cable operator has now launched faster DOCSIS 3.0 speeds in Rhode Island. That's the third market to see DOC 3.0 deployment, after the company offered the service earlier this year in Lafayette, Louisiana and portions of Northern Virginia. The price for the new 50Mbps downstream 5Mbps upstream "Ultimate" tier is $144.99 per month.

Prices for the service do vary by location. In Cox's initial launch market of Lafayette, Louisiana, the company is competing with a municipal fiber deployment that the company tried for years to derail. Lafayette Utilities System (LUS) offers standalone symmetrical 10Mbps for $28.95, 30Mbps for $44.95, and 50Mbps for $57.95. In turn, Cox is offering their 50Mbps/5Mbps tier in that market for just $90 per month.

In Northern Virginia, where Cox is responding to FiOS competition, the faster DOCSIS 3.0 service costs customers $139.99 per month bundled, or $109 per month if you sign a one-year contract. In all markets, the service comes with three unique IP addresses, 10 e-mail addresses, and 50 hours per month of remote dial access, an interesting perk we've seen a lot of carriers throw by the wayside in recent years.

According to Cox, the company hopes to offer the faster DOCSIS 3.0 speeds in more than two-thirds of its systems across the country by the end of 2010. As always, our user opinions on Cox service can be found in our Cox review database, where, 1,328 reviews are currently listed, or in our Cox forum.

No caps in Lafayette

Also worth noting is Cox does not cap plans that compete with fiber.

Apparently being in the general area fiber makes electrons cheaper to move from point A to point B.

Re: No caps in Lafayette

I don't believe Cox caps plans in other markets either....regardless of their AUP.

Just wait until online video takes hold and we will see how "loosely enforced" they are. They wouldn't have them if they didn't think they were going to use them.

Re: No caps in Lafayette

We'll see. Cox has listed the caps in their AUP for quite some time now, with little to no issues that I'm aware of.

We're already seeing that with metered internet.
Providers are seeing this with people cutting the cord on video and getting it online so they're going to be making it not worth it.

They told me they don't enforce them. Now, if you are 1 TB user a month, they might, yes might, look at you. If you have a bundle, they told me (executive resolutions, "We ain't risking losing $160 a month over some HSI usage. I didn't even know we had caps. That's a Comcast thing."

Pricing is HIGH

Wow, $109 a month is steep.

I live in Connecticut and currently have their $50 Premiere Internet plan which normally tests out at 25 - 30MB down and 5MB up.

Why would I pay $50 more a month for 20 MB faster speeds that I probably won't see anyways.

Does the $109 a month package allow me to run webservers from my house or something? What am I missing here?

Re: Pricing is HIGH

This is primarily meant for PR purposes and not a competitive tier. When they're ready to market this tier the price will come down.

Another "Select Market" I see

D3 is in arizona but only gets half the speeds that the 'have' markets get.
-
have = 50000/5000
havenot = 28000/2000[which can be done on D2 equipment]

D3 uses bonding to keep the speeds the same.

This Info is Wrong

The price is 149.95 a Month....

You can't get a 1 year contract with this.

Install is 100.00. Price for the modem is an ADDITIONAL 100.00.

You can't bundle this with other products to get a discount.

If you are in one of cox's bundles, you loose that discount as they have no bundles with this.

Also, at 149.95 in RI, you can get FIOS which has 20 meg upload and not 5. The upload is a JOKE at this price.

How do i know all this? I called. But I have FIOS, I pay 100.00 a month for cable and internet and have a 20 meg upload. Cox is behind the times.

Re: This Info is Wrong

Just to clarify -- the price of Ultimate Internet in our Rhode Island service area is $144.99 per month.

As with all Cox products, our pricing varies by market and may include introductory or promotional offers from time to time.
