| Reports of Cable's Death Greatly Exaggerated The important point here in my mind is that they are milking out these impressive upload speeds using DOCSIS 2.0 gear. While the speeds haven't hit here yet (and probably won't until they're done with the 1GHz plant upgrade), its clear cable is no danger from the FiOS boogeyman. -- "Don't steal. &
download speed of Fios ranges from 5,120 kbit/s to 51,200 kbit/s
also: quote: In 2007, Dr. John Papandriopoulos, a University of Melbourne engineering researcher, patented algorithms that can potentially boost DSL line speeds to a maximum of 250 Mbit/s

| Powerboost: the new "up to" What's to stop a cable co from using the new powerboost speeds as their "up to" moniker on tiers for their marketing? It seems to me that they'd need to change the asterisk to something like "Actual speeds vary. Advertised speeds reflects first few minutes of download. Off peak times only. Actual speeds after first few minutes of download subject to additional conditions and network management.", and the normal user wouldn't be able to tell the difference. | |

There's no way you can REALLY tell what your TRUE UL or DL is with a company using powerboost. for all you know after the powerboost a supposed 10 Mbps connection could be 5 and how would you tell? Speed test? Oh wait that would immediatly employ the powerboost thus falsely inflating your actual TRUE speed. Sorry I'll pass. I hope Charter never implements this.

ISO? Whatever that is. 99.9% of NORMAL people don't know what an ISO is. And I'm not wasting time looking for one. That's a real stupid way to know when there are speedtests out there.
b) who gives a crap? Isn't the point behind a faster connection being able to download shit faster? Or are you more concerned about bragging rights? First of all the people I see bragging the most are the ones with powerboost going to speedtest.net and posting their inflated results.
I care because if I'm paying $70 a month for say 16 Mbps tier I damned well better be getting 16 mbps not 8.
Let me ask you, if your ISP instituted a cap, even a really high one of say 500 GB a month, but they said "We won't give you a way to tell how much bandwidth you're using just trust us to measure it for you" would you trust them? Or would you not say "wait a minute, I want my own way of knowing what I'm using"

| Re: Powerboost: the new "up to" What are you yammering on about? Do you want a checkbox on the popular speedtest sites to turn off your ISP's powerboost? Well sorry, not going to happen. First you don't like speedtests, then in your latest you say there's speedtests out there so who needs file downloads.
I gave you an idea to find a file whose download size will outlast the limited duration of powerboost and you don't like that either. How about an engraved plaque? A notarized certificate? A stick drawing in a pile of dirt?

| What "Powerboost" Cox hasn't rolled this out in Stepford yet. Er, I mean Orange County, CA. And if they have, I haven't received anything to let me know about its availability and I certainly haven't seen any discernible "boost" in my connection. Then again, FIOS and U-Verse aren't available in this market so I would imagine Cox won't bother to roll out their pathethic "boost" to compete. | |

| I would love to see Fios adopt something like this. They could go to 100/100. (They can't go higher without upgrading their equipment, and most people only have 100 Mbps Ethernet anyway.) They could do it tomorrow if they wanted to. And they could even turn it on full time -- that would mean shared bandwidth (there's something like 622/155 available per 32 customers on a Fios node), but by cable company standards, that would still be a good deal. -- 09 F9 11 02 9D 74 E3 5B D8 41 56 C5 63 56 88 C0 | |

| why not make upload permanent already? Just provide options that allow for permanent upload speed increases already. This is 2008, we've got plenty of download speed, why not give us more upload so we can actually do some neat things with our bandwidth such as off site backup, high quality multi-person video conferencing, and who knows what else. With powerboost, it just seems like a tease to me, enough to make you feel like you've got bandwidth when running speed tests, and that's about it. I think perhaps speed tests should be a bit larger and reflect peak speed and sustained speed as well, because otherwise Powerboost will give a false indication of having lots of bandwidth you really don't truly have but for a few seconds. Of course I just subscribed to my cable provider's business class top tier soly for the upload and it's just 2mbps. Not complaining, I'm loving it, but I want to know what cable upstream is really capable of. | |

| This is mid-year 2008.... All cable companies should be offering around 5megabits upstream by now throughout the footprint... there is NO excuse considering the money they've made from the docsis technology over the past decade. To the extent that they've skimped on deep fiber/node expansion speaks volumes to the lack of REAL competition more than anything. Putting back together a stronger AT&T didn't seem to help much, if any... perhaps in select markets bundles are competitively priced. | |
