In this era we should add "cable rate hikes" to that list.
Preferred internet is ~$46 here. Hopefully that doesn't go up any further...

Looks like it is time to cancel some services.

| We can't get our full speed now in BR!! The article states we will get a speed increase on the two top tiers. How???!!!??! We can't even hit the speeds we are supposed to at night now. The 1-2 megabits at night is awesome. I love seeing page stall, youtube constantly rebuffering...netflix streaming not working.. I'll be happy as a clam paying $3 more a month for this garbage!

Hey Karl...add that piece to your front page news of the wonderful speeds we have been dealing with for almost a year in Baton Rouge. Take note of how the Cox Techs in the forum won't even touch that thread. Don't get me wrong, they do a great job, but I guess their bosses told them to not go there. --

| In less than two months FiOS will be an alternative at my house (they just strung the FiOS wires on our utility poles, yesterday). I was just looking at the bundled and unbundled prices that VZ has on their FiOS web site. VERY competitive with Cox. VZ also, currently, has no caps. So, I could probably get most of my viewing done strictly via IP rather than FiOS TV.
Oh well, looks like I'll have a decision to make within the next two months. -- The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt. -- Bertrand Russell

This is what competition is all about.. the company your with gives you crap service.. a competitor rolls in.. you switch.. company at least tries to get it's act together with better prices & speeds for video and broadband. With verizon fios, you may not even need a tv subscription, depending upon how much video you watch!

| Are you guessing two months? I received a FiOS door hanger a couple of weeks ago, but I've yet to see any activity in my neighborhood. Our utilities are buried, so it's not as easy to see infrastructure additions as with the aerial cables.
I'm still enjoying my Cox 12 month special, but will be interested to see VZ/Cox price comparisons in the Apr/May time frame.

| Typical gouging Raising rates and probably making as much profit percentage as every other cable company. The Comcast story is still fresh in the mind how their quarterly profit went from 700 plus million dollars to 900 plus million dollars for the same quarter. Glad I decided I can live without pay TV years ag. | |

| Not raising cost of "Ultimate" tier... The one price Cox is NOT raising is the charge for its "Ultimate" tier. That is the 50/5 tier that they offer only in Lafayette and Gonzales in our region--both places which have local FTTH systems (LUS and EATel). Lafayette has a 50/50 tier which is already cheaper than Cox's 50/5 so they don't want to get MORE out of sync. They launched that tier nationally in Lafayette (which, aside from LUS' muni fiber is NOT a major market). Baton Rouge and New Orleans, which are much, much bigger markets don't have an "Ultimate" alternative. The complaints here may point to why that is.
The % increase is also much larger for the lower-end tiers, both internet and cable, than it is for higher-end packages.
Conclusion?
Cox is working the strategy of competing only for high-end dollars, leaving the little guys to make the choice of of another, lesser provider if they want. That will probably work ok when the competition is only AT&T. (For them, not the little guy!) But it won't work in Gonzales or Lafayette where it is Cox's network that is the inferior one...raising rates on inferior services will surely have the predictable effect of lowering their market share in those places. But for the bulk of the market their strategy is clearly emerging.
Lafayette has had two major tech-side businesses relocate to the city from other parts of the country in the last week. It has been a good week for the local guys in Lafayette.
The rest of the country has to face up to the the way duopolies' break up markets: One guy takes the cream, the lesser competitor takes the less profitable low end and they agree not to poach too much on each other. Price wars just stress the investors and endanger executive bonuses. Duopolies don't, except for short periods when they are trying to figure out which role they play, really compete on price.
