If you are the subject, it is select markets. If you are the object, cherry-picking.
Object; the one having something done to them. Or in the case of FiOS not done.

| | | Disclosure: I interned at Cox for about a year but it has been about 1.5 years since I left.
It could also be that they're testing it out to see how people react to it, before spreading it to other markets. That's what they did with Cox Wireless (thank goodness too, as that was a gigantic flop that would have failed miserably if they expanded it past the 2 trial markets).
Cox has about ~20 markets spread around the nation, and each of them is more or less independent too, so it's unrealistic to expect every market to do the same thing at the same time. A company that big moves at the speed of an elephant.
Or maybe they're just only upgrading the markets that have more competition so they don't bleed customers and still save a buck. Who knows.

"Cherry-picking" is business 101, there are no Mercedes dealers in Irvington NJ but they have dark FiOS loops all over that town. I was just commenting on calling it "select areas" and not by the common term, "cherry-picking".

I can get that but twisted pair is better ; DSL and POTS worked during Sandy and for 11 days after the lights went out (POTS without a home generator); C.A.T.V worked for a few hours and was out until the power came back on. The cable box knew it was connected to something but was still useless.

| | haha I laugh when it says Gamers 150Mbps. An average multiplayer game will take up less than 512kbps. If you are downloading a lot of content then at least 10Mbps - 15Mbps. | |
|
| | | Re: haha After spending $1000 on a GPU it's only fair to give the ISP a bigger cut | |
|
| | | Not even 0.5Mbps. More like 30Kbps. I don't know why this whole "online game = massive bandwidth needed" meme persists. | |

latency is more important but if you have multiple people this can be a issue

Blob -- I may have been born yesterday. But it wasn't at night.
|
| | Really? As a cable company they honestly offer a 1Mbps package? I hope that is a "free" option.
Their absolute minimum should be 5Mbps, if not 25Mbps, for any paying customer.

| Re: I pay less for business internet from Charter... Cox is ridiculous when it comes to small business needs. I run well under their 250GB cap but need to run a web server and have a static IP. The best they'll do is $120 for 20/3 service. Can't buy a static IP with a home account and can't have port 80 open for the web server. | |

| | Speeds are awesome I heard that AT&T Uverse 45 Meg package was coming to down, so I called Cox to tell them I was leaving for Uverse. They offered me a 50/10 Meg package for 34.00 for 12 months. They are running a 1/2 off promo for the Premier tier. Sure I'll take the faster package for cheaper. The speeds are very consistent. If Google ever comes to town we'll be asking Cox who! | |
|
| | Time Warner still behind Meanwhile Time Warner is still maxed out at 50/5... Why is the 2nd largest Cable Company always behind... | |

If I bundle anything with any of these (I do for DSL currently a POTS line) that price will drop for sure.

| LightSPremium join:2005-12-17 Greenville, TX | Re: And people tell me AT&T DSL pricing was high That's funny, because I am receiving letters in the mail advertising the "massive" value of U-Verse for $19.99/mo for a 2 year contract, and after that it goes up to $29.99/mo.
Speed? 768kbps downstream.
Expensive. | |
