Cox Starts Doubling Speeds Market by Market
Back in May Cox Communications tried to jump on the 1 Gbps excitement bandwagon by announcing they would offer 1 Gbps service to all users -- in a few years or more. As part of that announcement Cox announced something more immediate: a bump in Preferred & Premier tier speeds to 50Mbs & 100Mbs respectively, starting in July. Arizona users appear to be the first in line for the speed increases, with the whole state upgraded by the end of July. Cox is murky on details beyond Arizona, though you can track the deployment progress via this thread in our Cox forums.

It's measurable

All these speed upgrades that ISPs are doing seems to be having a measurable effect. According to Google M-Labs, end user speeds in the U.S. have more than doubled since January 1st...

I applaud increases in speeds as this will better everyone's experience.

Having said that...... It shouldn't be up to the government or private firms to have to point out to ISP's that we are one of the worst in the world when it comes to price, choice, and speed.

Telcos are state sponsored monopolies - we'll let get away with anything if you hand over all your customer data to the NSA.

Unless they deploy fiber to the home, but that like next to never happens. So yes they do suck. I had to watch as a new housing was being built right in view of were I lived and they were getting fiber to the home from century link.

Now the town is getting 1Gbs fiber from RST fiber, to bad I don't live there anymore.

Does anyone else have a I moved out right before the area got 1Gb's fiber story?

You are probably a market used for testing.... did you pay for 50 Mbps, is that your agreed to plan? Or is there a dedicated 100 Mbps plan already? Maybe you will, keep checking

If your ultimate speed was at 100Mbps you'll go to 150Mbps.

Probably not. Phoenix has had a 150mbps tier for a year now but it's not moving. Just the 25 and 50 tiers are getting bumped to 50 and 100 respectively.

Something I noticed it seems like any one with 50mbps or great that they pay for on a tier are consistently well above their rated speed while those say 25 or less tend to be consistently under rated speed.

Ultimate will increase to 150 Mbps in areas where it is only 100 Mbps (such as SOCAL).

Last I heard in the forum - "BTW it should be a bit sooner than November." - »Re: [AZ] Speed Increase July Rollout Date for Preferred/Premier

Here's to hoping it hits before too much longer in my area!

Optimum Online

There was a time when Optimum Online from Cablevision was the fastest thing around. Now I pay $59.95/month for 18/5 service I could pay $5 for Boost but that only goes to 50Mbs.

What is Cox's basic tier?

Speed increase is window Dressing

Folks on the surface getting the speed increase might be great, but without a cap increase to go along with it then it is nothing but window dressing.

Cox doesn't enforce caps, people go way over every month and they dont do anything....so go crap on somebody else's thread

if they're affecting others, they get a nastygram email then get disconnected.

Cox users all get nasty grams when they hit their cap limit. I was one of them. And now that they are offering faster speeds people will hit their cap much sooner. And if you believe they never will enforce the caps then I have ocean side property in Nevada to sell you. Comcast is going in that direction and the others will follow.

I sure got mine disconnected in Phoenix last year for it. They wanted me to move to a "business" plan for using 400gb/mo for three months in a row.

I was paying them $180/mo for cable and internet, i'm pretty sure they loved it when CenturyLink and Dish got my business. my 40/5 DSL is great and not one word about going over 250GB

More speed?

How about bigger caps? It doesn't do much good to have really fast speeds if the ISP doesn't allow you to transfer a TB every month. 150GB or 250GB is way too low. 500GB would be a start but 1TB would be ideal.

caps are all about protecting legacy video[cable tv] revenues. they will rarely move.

cable-co phenomenon+observation.

I don't see TELCOS (AHEM, VERIZON, ATT) chomping at the bit to double speeds as a FREE upgrade (not an intro, temporary limited)..

I'm seeing the bump in Kansas

I am on their 50Mbps package and after doing a speed test I'm pulling about 120-127Mbps down... That's a nice gift to wake up too! Now it's time to wait for them to do a "Price Increase" since they gave us more speed.
