Cox Will Bid In 700Mhz Auction
Takes aim at 'convergence and mobility...'
by Karl Bode Tuesday 04-Dec-2007 tags: competition · business · wireless · alternatives · Comcast · Cox HSI
While Comcast and Time Warner Cable say they'll be standing on the sidelines when the 700Mhz auction comes around, Cox has announced that the company intends to bid -- hinting at broader wireless ambitions. "We remain committed to furthering our plans for the convergence and mobility of our services and believe that bidding on this 700 MHz spectrum could provide us with another alternative that would support our goals," a Cox spokesman says.

Given that Cox is private, they can tinker with wireless ambitions without annoying investors, who usually don't like the slow returns on large build projects (see early investor reaction to Verizon FiOS and reaction to Sprint's Xohm plans). Rumors of expensive wireless plans have been plaguing Comcast stocks for months.

There's a good reason stockholders.....

aren't willing to put their money on the line in certain situations. They make no business sense!

Google's idea of a free or cheap wireless 'nirvana' is one example. We're talking billions here, and I'd have to believe that Cox isn't looking to lay out this kind of money just to give it away. Otherwise, as the saying goes- a fool and his money.......

Re: There's a good reason stockholders.....

And what is Google going to do? Google right now seems to be "trendy" right now so they can do no wrong, but as it goes, the bigger they are....

It will be interesting to see what Google does and if we will really end up with iPhone + spamming banner adds. They "have" to make some profit from it some how, and spending that much on the spectrum doesn't mean there going to give it away for free.

Cable & wireless can be synergistic

One advantage that a cable company can bring to a wireless network is that their existing high speed infrastructure can be used to backhaul internet traffic from the access points.

And it can be an added benefit to their landline customers by giving them roaming access when not at home.

And even if that can't be used to make a good business case for bidding on the spectrum, the leasing of the spectrum to others with a built-in backhaul capability might be a good side business.

I see them using this for rural areas as well, Places where that last 5 miles of plant just doesn't make sense to run.

Making their own way

Cox has been the innovator. Started off with being one of the 1st Cable Telco providers, they invest in the future. I can only say it is smart and bring on the technology.

As a company I woul drather do what makes sense and not worry about what a stock holder wants me to do.

Re: Making their own way

The more you think about it its a brilliant move investment wise if they could pull it off. They could sell it to the other cable company's or whoever making a nice chunk of change in the process.Do they have the Cash to outbid Google and Verizon ?

Re: Making their own way

The one thing about Cox is the family(the Cox Family) always invest in their company. Makes sense and to is smart business. Alot of owners look at the stock market for success. Cox looks at their nubers and growth.

Interesting that Cox would bid alone.

So far I've read about Google, Cox, AT&T, Verizon, Frontline, Dish Network/Echostar and Leap Wireless signing up for the auction.
