Cox Will Offer Some DOCSIS 3.0 In 2008
Primarily in FiOS markets...
by Karl Bode Friday 21-Mar-2008 tags: bandwidth · cable · Cox HSI · Rogers Hi-Speed · buckeye cable
Though we've already discussed that most cable operators will be following Comcast's lead on DOCSIS 3.0 deployments (hey, who'll ever need a 50-100Mbps connection anyway, right?), Light Reading has a bit more detail on deployments by Cox and Rogers. Cox does appear set to offer asymmetrical pre-cert DOCSIS 3.0 later this year in areas where it faces competition (read: FiOS). Canadian operator Rogers, without FiOS to nudge them along, won't be deploying the technology until 2009 or 2010. Toledo, based Buckeye CableSystem (you might recall them from when they waged war against modem uncappers back in 2002) jokes that they're "waiting as fast as we can on this."

Will they raise the monthly cap?

Meanwhile people keep complaining that FiOS competition hasn't brought down prices. There is more to competition than price and Verizon has gotten a number of cable operators off their fat asses, namely CableVision, Comcrap, Cox and Time Warner who are directly responding to FiOS competition by ramping up speeds. Time Warner raised speeds here to 15/2 shortly after FiOS was deployed, and they didn't do it 'cause they're nice guys.

Actually cable has gotten the Telco's off their @$$es. If it wasn't for the deployment of HFC networks in the late 80' and early 90's, you wouldn't see FiOS deployment today.

Exactly how competition is supposed to work- no one can sit on a single technology too long without either upgrading or lowering prices... (and of course cablecos and telcos will never lower prices)

That's why customer service and overall satisfaction will be the deciding factor.

Wrong. Telcos were soundly beating cable in new ads with their $15-$20 DSL offering despite slower speeds. And xDSL was a natural evolution that would have happened with or without cable.

I've had friends with Cox tell me they have passed 0.5TB a month with zero problems.

Where's Cablevision???

You'd think CV would be a leader in all this. Yet DOCSIS 3.0 doesn't even appear to be on their radar.

Hypocrits

I find it ironic that they would deploy in areas that they are losing money, yet drag feet with excuses that it is too expensive where there is no competition. Damn mercenaries.

Re: Hypocrits

Yeah, I don't expect to see DOCSIS 3.0 in Phoenix anytime soon. They're only competition (and I use the term loosely) is Qworst. Word has it that Verizon wants to work into the area. But of course they will only go after affluent areas like North Scottsdale, Gilbert, and Chandler south of the 202.
Besides Cox has their hands full with getting the bugs out of VOD here.

Re: Hypocrits

I was at the Light Reading conference. A discussion point came up a couple times. Which is more important, the ability to spike at times to 100 Mbps or to be able to deliver 15 to 30 Mbps consistently? I agreed with a couple of the speakers that the latter is more important, partially based on what Internet sites will even be capable of delivering.

Only 3.0 modems will be able to go over 30 Mbps (4 to 8X in the next couple years), but existing 2.0 modems can get to that level given enough shared DOCSIS spectrum allocation.

DOCSIS 3.0

Good for Cox users, otherwise, I wonder when Time Warner will plan to roll in DOCSIS 3.0 into my area. My area is dying for bandwidth at night because everyone has cable. I'm one of the few that has DSL in my street lol.

Upspeed?

Give us some more upspeed, Cox.

if your going to offer killer downloads, how about some matching upspeeds?

Your "our friend in the digital age"... PROVE IT!

1 meg is enough but if you do a lot of show archiving, uploading pictures, etc etc the extra up is nice (say 10 megs.. /me drops dead and wakes up

Also, Cox is light on their TOS services and, people don't get dumped for the caps. But I'm sure they will raise the monthly caps.

I can't wait to see what Cox does..

Once the technology is there, I am sure Cox will take advantage of it...

Forget it robert. the more upload cry has fallen on deaf ears for over 10 years now.
only way you're getting more is by moving into a fios 'hood.

Cox Will Offer Some DOCSIS 3.0 In 2008

I know for a fact and it scares me and I hate it that Cleveland, OH will be that LAST one on the list to get this technology. And of course Cleveland's Cox is the last system to recieve anything, I see everyone has soooo many more HD channels then the Cleveland market and it sucks. Then people (meaning Cox) wants to know why people are switching to U-Verse, it's probably because U-verse isn't as slow as Cox it to bringing out HD or high speed www.

Don't get my wrong, I enjoy Cox's reliable WWW, but I just want faster upload. For some people that work from home, a fast upload would be great. I called Cox about this and in order to get the same download speed for their premium speed, but get 2mb up they want $250 a month. Which is a business line account and I don't want that if I can get a 15/1 line for $40 a month. So why can't Cox offer a fast upload, I'd rather drop my download speed just to get upload a fast upload speed.

Okay, I'm done complaing now, it's time for everyone's comment on what I said

Because upload can ALWAYS be used. unlike the token downstream bumps we get from time to time goes largely unused.
Most sites i download from cap out around 400KB/s. thats around 20% of my total downstream bandwidth.

Re: Cox Will Offer Some DOCSIS 3.0 In 2008

I know tell me that, I mean sometimes I hit 1.5mb down depending on the website that I am downloading from (microsoft web sites etc.) But if Cox or any ISP would actually listen to their customers and ask what their customer wants instead of the "Corporate" world deciding what we the American people need or don't need.

So if Cox did ask us the users, I would vote for a faster upload.

Cox has said in a previous public briefing that when the roll out DOCSIS 3.0 (the full version, not asymmetric DOCSIS 3.0 down and 1.1/2.0 upstream) that their target speeds will be 25/4. 4Mb/s upstream sounds pretty good to me.
