Spectrum grab hints at possible plans
(old news - 09:48AM Tuesday Mar 25 2008)
tags: business · wireless · cable · Cox HSI
In the recent 700Mhz auction, Cox Communications won 14 Block A and eight Block B licenses for bids totaling roughly $304 million. While Cox hasn't publicly stated what they plan to do with this spectrum, the geographic limitations of the spectrum mirrors their existing cable footprint -- leading to obvious speculation that the company will be offering wireless broadband before too long. Likely targets are their largest metro markets: San Diego, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Pensacola, Florida, and Norfolk/Virginia Beach, Virginia. As a private company, Cox doesn't have to worry (as much) about the plan dragging down their share price (rumors of wireless ambitions hit Comcast stock hard in 2007).

i'm thinking femtocells

This would allow them to offer a wireless service teamed with cable modem femtocells and help them get rid of the Pivot service they have with Sprint.

Point to point possibilities

Would a portion of this spectrum be used for wireless point to point broadband. I know they have been dabbling with this in Phoenix to provide HSI is areas they haven't run fiber/coax yet. Particularly in subdivisions still under construction.

All companies, public and private, must be concerned about their earnings and share price. Their profitability and EPS affects their ability to attain capital.

Re: dslreports editor needs an MBA

Hence why the article says as much. Obviously companies want to make as much money as possible, but without having to worry about whiny ass'd shareholders, they are able to take a risk that should bode well for them in this case.
