Cut Cable Causes Extensive Outage around Egypt
Over fifty percent of Internet service lost in the region
by KathrynV Wednesday 30-Jan-2008 tags: world · outage
Businesses and individuals throughout India and much of the Middle East are facing a lack of Internet connection after an undersea cable was accidentally cut. The cable may have been severed by the anchor of a ship that was rerouted due to storms. The outage has caused over two thirds of Egypt’s Internet network and over half of the bandwidth in India to be lost. Partial service should be restored soon but full service could take up to two weeks to resume. It is unclear at this point how business and commerce will be affected as a result of the outage.

Redundancy

Isn't redundancy so wonderful in the way it avoids total outages? Oh - wait a minute. They can't have had any. Let this be a lesson to network planners everywhere.

Wow...

Talk about unlucky circumstances. Imagine being the ship that caused it... Now thats a heavy anchor...

Isn't that the whole idea? A floating anchor wouldn't really help.

Hello? Hello? How can I help you? Hello?...

I wonder how many call centers in India, fed with VOIP lines, are off-line this evening...

It's a huge problem

This is going to cause a lot of problems, it’s not just India but most of the traffic between Europe and the middle and far east. It’s going to cause big problems too for many American companies with operations in those countries, for example airlines, travel companies etc. Many people are going to have to work tonight.

IT Capital of the World? You haven't been there have you? Sure there are lots of companies there but I wouldn't call it the IT capital by any stretch.

I think "outsourcing capital of the world" would be a better descriptor.

You're kidding!!! Last time I called Dell tech support, the fellow on the other end ASSURED me his name was Greg.

I called another time, and spoke to a nice young lady. Her name was Marsha.

I asked her if I could talk to Cindy or Jan.

That was when Marsha told me it was all about MARSHA MARSHA MARSHA!

Then, 1974 rolled around. Cousin "the jinx" Oliver showed up, sliced a fiber optic cable and ruined the whole damn thing.

I knew that Tiki was TABOO!!!!

I always get "Ross", "Rachel" or "Phoebe." I ask for "Ugly Naked Guy" or failing that Roj, Dee, Rerun, Dwayne or Miz Thomas. One of them will have the answer.

Hm.

Didn't something similar to this happen already last year? I imagine it was to different countries in the middle east though...or perhaps I was wrong.

Either way I imagine there will be quite a few business troubles.

Doesn't seem to be effecting too much globally...but I'd hate to be there. BTW, Iran sure is out of it, huh?
