Was it shot or sawed? Copper or fiber?
(old news - 03:19PM Friday Aug 24 2007)

Cogent Internet users in the Northeastern states lost service earlier this week due to a series of problems that are amusing enough to make a sitcom out of them. First, a cable was sawed into, probably by thieves who thought that they could sell the copper. Unfortunately for them, it was a fiber cable. Then, technicians came out to replace the cut cable, which they did -- using another cable that was damaged by gunshots. So, although the original story said that the cable had been shot, the shot cable was actually pre-damaged cable used to replace the cut cable. Of course, the users who were affected by the outages probably don’t find all this to be so funny.

why in the world

Why would you use already damaged wire? that makes no sense what so ever.

Maybe CBS or FOX will have a copper thieves reality show. Survivor: Copper theft edition, last one alive cashes in!

More then likely the fiber used for the original repair was sitting on a big reel either on a truck or in a storage yard.

It's possible somebody took pot shots at the reel while it was in storage.

What I hope didn't happen was someone reeled up a section of previously damaged fiber and didn't mark it. Then it's possible it was used by mistake...

Better yet, make it progressive, like the strong man competition.

Start off with something .. simple (i.e. POTS wire) ~50V or coax from CableCo.
Then move up to household electrical 120/240V
Then up to pole mounted 6kV lines
.... then 250,000kV high tension lines

Reports are that thieves who thought it was copper got in a manhole and cut cables, or something like that...

Funny?

Im sure the techs that spent all that time splicing pairs back in didnt find it funny either. Most likely as suggested the fiber was pulled from the yard and it was damaged while sitting on the reel.
Apparently the only ones who found it funny where DSLR's.

Complete story in the local newspaper

Initial reports on this topic were in error and talked about gunplay damaging aerial fiber cables, etc.

What really happened? None too bright local thieves cut fiber cable thinking was valuable copper, the replacement cable was damaged by gunshot before it was installed, fiasco ensues.

More details in the Cleveland Plain Dealer story... »www.cleveland.com/news/plaindeal···l&coll=2 (site may ask for age/demo info, but no paywall or login)
