FCC remains the final hurdle
(old news - 11:12AM Wednesday Oct 11 2006)
tags: fcc · business · telco
The Justice Department has approved the AT&T BellSouth merger, according to the Associated Press, leaving the FCC as the final hurdle in rebuilding a significant portion of Ma bell's original empire. The $78.5 billion deal creates the nation's largest provider of phone, wireless and broadband services. As mentioned yesterday, the newest Conservative FCC chief has recused himself from the vote due to his previous stint as a CLEC lobbyist, leaving the possibility for a partisan split vote, which could delay final approval.

Too much..

Too much mergin' goin' on 'round here!

Everyone wants to merge with someone else anymore. Time/Warner was almost destroyed by their merger with AOL, Exxon Merged with Mobil, can't remember who Texaco merged with, and the list goes on and on.

I'm all for free markets, but I think government agencies should be pre disposed to denying mergers that approving them. They're almost never good for the customer..

The paraphrase was to make fun of a previous member of Congress.

I have no particular opposition to this merger. In fact, I know pretty much nothing about it. Just trying to make a funny.

I think I hear crickets.....

Here is the map and how it will look when the merger is approved:

If you look at the map and see how Verizon wants out of Maine & Vermont, they are coming in 3rd in this horse race. Even Fios may not save them in the long run.

Funny isn't it? I remember the running joke when I used to work at Qwest on the unregulated data side was that we had more barb wire than local customers.

There was a footnote on the map. Small non-RBOC companies aren't displayed to keep map simple.

Embarq is a RBOC, but serves a city here, a city there.

If in Tallahassee, Embarq is your provider.

I was unaware Embarq was considered small. Had them here in Tallahassee and in Orlando. Parents in Sopchoppy have it. I don't know where the Sprint and Bellsouth lines begin and end but it seems to me Sprint serves large sections of Florida...but I don't know that for sure.
Either way, a very interesting map.

Embarq is not, nor ever has been, a RBOC. You kind of have to be from the Bell System to qualify as a RBOC.

Well, seeing as you don't even know what an RBOC is, it is no surprise that you don't know if there are any CLECs left.

If you looked in any phone book though, you would know that there are CLECs still around. Mostly they cater to small businesses though, not too much to residences.

Embarq is a RBOC
RBOC=Regional Bell Operating Company. Embarq was formerly known as Sprint which was formerly known as United Telecommunications. It was never part of the Bell System.

Embarq is, however, an ILEC like the RBOCs as opposed to a CLEC. ILEC=Incumbent Local Exchange Carrier and CLEC=Competitive Local Exchange Carrier. Maybe that's what you were thinking.

Well you know but Wikipedia is not exactly a "gospel". It's a volunteer effort and thus will have certain mistakes. The map does not take into account Verizon's ex-GTE properties in the South and West Coast.

Verizon is a unique animal. They are made up of both Bell and Non-Bell assets. They had RBOC properties in the northeast and independent GTE properties scattered throughout the country.

In some states (like Pennsylvania) they had both Bell (Bell Atlantic) and independent (GTE) lines. Now they are all doing business under the Verizon name.

Only problem with that map is, it's not entirely accurate. Verizon provides service in states like WA, and OR, as does Qwest.

Re: Too much..

It also says that Qwest's area is all from USWest. Qwest only picked up a few states from that deal. Otherwise they were Qwest long before the West Deal.

That map is inaccurate, we have various providers in Oregon, including large providers like Verizon, as a matter of fact our location is fios ready, however we don't want them to yank our copper.

Great...

So, does that mean Bellsouth customers can expect to start having their traffic routed over AT&T's aging backbone infrastructure ?

Was only a couple years ago when it was that way in Ohio with VZ and paid out the ass for service. $39+ to VZ for the DSL circuit and then $19+ to the ISP.

it may take a while, hayabusa...as in, after AT&T owns Qwest and Verizon's territories. *chuckles* I doubt that will happen, but who knows? Either way, it sounds like this merger is a for-sure thing now...

I doubt anyone would want to take over Qwest. According to the map, most of their territory are plains & desert states (New Mexico, Montana, etc.) Low population density I would guess.

Hopefully price drops..

Well, the way I see it, I'm hoping Bellsouth's DSL prices will drop down to AT&T's sometime soon..
