| This is crazy This is just stupid on there part. Colbert has basically admitted on air he knows he gets a lot of publicity from youtube. I'm not one to usually complain about this sort of stuff since it is their legal right. However, the business logic of this move is awful. | |

so problem solved. i just won't watch the clips at all anywhere.

The issue at hand is how heavy handed these businesses want to be with the internet. They want control over everything, yet the internet's very existence is not about control, its about information.
Look if you want us to watch it on your site great, but don't load it down with so much garbage that no one wants to visit the site. Adult swim gets this. They have their stuff easily accessible and the garbage is on a very low min to almost none.
I've been to the Comedy Central website and checked out the various show clips. The site is littered with too many ads.
We *don't* want to be advertised to on the net. We just want to get to the information/media nothing more nothing less. Spam would be a non-issue if we really wanted to be advertised to.

No. The issue at hand is content-owners requesting that their material remains withing their control. Remember, under law, if a content owner is "fully aware" that their content is within the public domain, and they do nothing to correct it, then it becomes public domain. Meaning they loose all rights to protect their copyright / trademark / property.

| I prefer it. I just went to the Comedy Central site, and in plain view was a link to go to 'videos'. From there I was able to pull up HUNDREDS if not thousands of videos from every show on CC.
The quality was decent, I could go fullscreen, and instead of sitting through an ad before each video, there was a static one in the corner.
In this case, not only will I prefer their site over youtube's, but I may actually watch clips from shows I wouldn't normally sit through on TV (all the while taking in the purty ad on the screen).
Imagine that. | |

| Comedy Central - Killing the Goose Wow, the television execs are yet again showing they truly don't 'get it'. People WANT to watch the clips on the internet. And people WILL watch the clips on the internet. Using the DMCA to 'takedown' material is going to backfire on them in a big way. I personally download the torrents, because the quality (xvid) is much better than the streaming crap rate you get from youtube, but that's just me.
Why don't the executives see the light? The people WANT to download the TV shows. Comedy Central should provide high quality Divx format versions of their shows on their websites. They should run their own trackers. They should EMBRACE the technology, not hide they heads in their asses. It never ceases to amaze me that these fat cat moron executives think that just because they made money in the PAST with a certain business model, that they think they have the right to make money in the FUTURE. They are like the old horse and buggy makers. We don't see many of them around anymore because, bluntly, technology changed the world, and the world advanced without them. -- Stick it to the MAN. Support your local torrent sites. Proudly providing 10mb of upstream for all your TV, Movie, and MP3 needs.

| Colbert can't brag anymore... In one of his shows, Colbert proclaimed his momentous achievement of having 2300 videos pop up whenever you search his name on YouTube. So much for that now. At least I nabbed all the old Produce Pete segments before YouTube yanked them. It certainly wasn't YouTube's decision, so what bitch do you have with them?

| Re: BOYCOtt THE TuBE!! Folks enough with the ownership crap. We know they have the rights to the shows, but with tv shows getting cancelled every minute because nobody watches them you would think that they would be working overtime to get younger people to watch. one way of doing this is through youtube and myspace. the major companies are blowing another chance at viewers.
I for one have never used a torrent and do know about comedy centrals website.
but being able to link youtube to a blog or something else gets that clip out there. most people have probably never visited there site so less viewers

| google capitalized on the popularity of a broadcast/rebroadcast technology which INCLUDED shady "copyright" safe harbor rights.. that being said, now that google is going to gut major parts of the value in the service. those being: 1. looking the other way with MOST kinds of uploaded content 2. cutting down the space alloted for little/no cost
This calls for a boycott because of the eroded value of the service and anything less keeps the 1.65 BILLION DOLLAR value intact, which is similar to paying $4 for gas just because adjusted for inflation you should be paying $6 a gallon junk.
IMHO, there are TOO MANY COMPANIES being made RICH because of an APATHETIC public too wimpy to challenge the concept of pay more get less mentality. We might even have to change what The United States of America stands for.. (corporate states of america)

4 edits | Re: BOYCOtt THE TuBE!! When you say "eroded value of service," how can you complain about something you were getting for free (downloads) anyway?
As for the value of YouTube, google is a private enterprise and unless you are a google stockholder, it's really none of your business. Even then, you're only hurting your own portfolio with a boycott.
And in spite of all this, the copyright holders have every right to pull their work from YouTube. Google has absolutely no control over this. They have no choice but to comply or get hit with copyright infringement suits.
Think about it: A lot of that 1.65B value is due to this material being available on YouTube, so why should the copyright holders not be compensated and let google get fat off them?
Sorry, but your logic is flawed. It's not YouTube's fault the copyright holders refuse to let their work be used this way. It's the holders' intellectual property. No matter how dumb the decison may seem to you and me, they have the exclusive right to call the shots and do not have to explain why.

| What really blows is... ...The Daily Show website utilizes Windows Media for its video, just like CNN and some other properties that I'd like to watch. However, the Windows Media experience, depending on the browser (Firefox) or platform (Mac) really blows. I don't care about the "lower" quality of the Flash video on YouTube -- at least the friggin' Flash Player is relatively the same sort of video viewing experience across platforms and web browsers. It's got Windows Media AND Quicktime beat in that regard.

| What if the southpark guys had this attitude in the mid 1990s? They wouldn't be rich.
A perfect example of this is Saturday Night Live. I'm 34 and my girlfriend is 24. Last month we're channel surfing and I stop on SNL for a minute. She's asks me what SNL is which absolutely floors me. I tell her it was hysterical back in the day and start listing off all of the famous skits they did. She has no idea what I'm talking about so we go look for some of my favorites skits on the internet like synchronized swimming, Waynes World, Chip N Dales Dancers and Mr Robersons neighborhood. I couldn't find any of them. All we could find was more cowbell. So she still thinks SNL is some stupid late night talk show and we don't stop on it anymore when channel surfing.
