Dell Offers First Smartphone Via AT&T
Aero arrives at $100, with outdated Android 1.5
by Karl Bode Tuesday 24-Aug-2010 tags: business · wireless · hardware
Dell today unveiled their first smartphone, the Android-based Aero, which goes on sale today for $100 if you agree to a two-year AT&T contract. The specs are solid if not immensely average, the device sporting a 3.5-inch screen, 2GB of onboard storage, triband 3.6Mbps HSDPA and quadband EDGE, a 5 MP camera, and all at 3.67 ounces. One thing that's annoying gadget nerds is that the device is still sporting the 1.5 version of Google's Android OS, though Dell (weakly) justifies this by insisting the Aero comes with a "tremendous amount of customization." Hopefully the device sees better results than Dell's other attempt to jump into an established market.

Dell failed.

Nice try, but you took too long to produce your product. I will see this in the bargain bin.

Re: Dell failed.

Indeed, you can get a Captivate for less with contract. Dell probably just agreed to whatever "customization" AT&T wanted and the schedule slipped and slipped. Android users want Android - not some piece of garbage on top of an outdated version of it.

Anyone notice

That they didn't even put their name on it? It's got the AT&T logo. I guess that's a good idea so that people won't associate a crappy phone and service with the dell brand name.

Re: Anyone notice

well also regarding Dell...."Dell is insisting that this device comes with a 'tremendous amount of customization.' " Does At&T know this?
What happens if the Deathstar cripples certain apps for this phone?

Then you're just stuck with a Dell phone on a sh*tty network!
Or do I have it in reverse...Apple crippling the apps?

'tremendous amount of customization.'
meaning you are stuck waiting forever for any types of updates or fixes.
this is why i want as pure android as possible, otherwise you have to wait for google to release new version, then wait for phone mft to release new version, then wait for carrier to release new version..
with stock android everybody in that ugly chain have to do less so you get updates faster.

This Could Work

If Dell marketed this as a low-cost option, then maybe they could get a few nibbles. However, running outdated firmware and requesting the same amount of change as other up-to-date phones...well...unless your sales media blitz is jaw-dropping, it's not going to fly.

android + heavy customization = HORRID everything

after using a "heavily" customised cliqXT "MotoHell/MotoBlur" i have learned to stay AWAY from heavily customized Android phones.

1. they offer NO SUPPORT
2. there is no UPDATES to many bugs
3. will have HORRID Bluetooth experience
4. NO OS updates

which in the end leaves a sour feel overall on "Android"
when in truth its the manufacture of the phone

i would not use this phone for free! much less use a phone on Android 1.5 @ $100 + signing a 2 year with ATT

1. apps in market are quickly running from 1.5 support.
also not to mention many popular apps dont even work on 1.5

2. Bluetooth in almost all OS version is quirky at best, tho @ 1.5 + heavy customization expect bad experience via BT

That's why you Root your phone and remove the bloatware. I have a HTC hero with Android 2.2 thanks to the CyanogenMod. I am using this until the Epic comes out.

dont be so quick to assume all Android phones are rootable. Dont assume this cheap phone that is heavily customized will be rootable.

Trust me if CliqXt was rootable i would have done it LONG ago

Dell just showed it's no software company

How can a company release something so outdated? It looks like Dell haven't understood that hardware and software complements each other.

If you have a good hardware but a less than good software = FAILED.

Dell Junk

More utter junk from Dell. You'd think they could stop at selling the biggest pieces of garbage in the PC world. But no, they need to infiltrate the smartphone market with their junk.

I think they are trying to be like Apple but they have nothing to offer. Unique ideas? Nope Quality? Nope. Vision? Nope. R&D department? Nope.

Mikey Boi, here's some advise - pack it up and return the $$ to the shareholders. Your garbage products will be missed by nobody.

Dell has never marketed a solid product

I was not aware that 'droid 1.5 was ever put into a device.
I thought they all started at 1.6 ?

ok so it has 1.5 on it

Is everyone completely precluded from hacking a later version onto it?

if Dell doesn't release any drivers, then hacking it becomes exceedingly difficult. Just look at the CliqXT which still has no root capability or "hacking".
