No 911 service but great incoming.
Google could do a Voip system similar to Galaxy Voice's system.
Also on my wishlist is the ability to purchase more phone numbers. So I can use them for different things, Political, Charatable, Businesses, Family.

| openbox9Premium join:2004-01-26 japan kudos:2 | Re: . How so? You'll still be paying a telecom company something for the privilege of being able to use Google's VoIP mechanism (unless you're fond of hunting for open WAPs). Besides, if Google truly wants to compete in the VoIP market, it'll need to do more than enable a VoIP option in GMail's contacts. | |
|
| | | | Re: . Small step but great nonetheless. It is further pushing voice (which now is right there with texting as the most expensive aspect of a cell phone plan with consumer cost to company cost ratio) to the IP sector.
May be a pipe dream, but I foresee a near future of dumb pipes, especially once smaller cellco's such as T-Mobile and Cricket build up their 3G territories, thus increasing competition. This will push us towards ~$50 all you can eat IP solutions.

I foresee a future where mobile providers will charge a service fee with buckets of bytes lumped on top to monetize usage. With the added constraints of wireless, I don't believe you'll see $50 all you can eat IP solutions.

| | | | 3 edits | Re: . I am talking about after smaller cellco's build up their networks. We don't have any real competition right now because it's hit and miss (coverage wise) with every single one of them. I am lucky enough to be on the last leg of my Verizon contract, and while I was stuck with them for the longest, T-Mobile finally has coverage where I live. So in a few months time I will reduce my bill from $140, to around $80 for two lines.
It's coming. It will just take a strong fight.

| | | | | | Constraints can be overcome with capex investment. It's all about how much a company is willing to invest. Thus France Telecom's $60 quad play. The biggest thing preventing competition from stealing Vz's and AT&T's plate is the inability to use a phone on another carrier's network. | |
|
| | | | | openbox9Premium join:2004-01-26 japan kudos:2 | Re: . CAPEX is facilitated by revenue. The biggest thing preventing alternative carriers from encroaching VZ's and T's market share is that lack of competing networks. Several choices exist for handsets, and more are introduced seemingly everyday. My inability to take my DX to Cricket, Virgin, Boost, etc., is not what prevents me from changing service providers. | |

Remember Google is not a telephone company therefore there is no protection for Google Voice users as to what Google does with their call records and or who they sell them to. Will Google refer to their new VoIP service as the snoop master 500. I guess Google will give those who pay, all of a user's personal information. It was reported on the Magic Jack forum that a Magic Jack user was called by an inmate at the local jail and within minutes received calls from several bail bondsmen. Will the same apply to Google VoIP? RIP Privacy! To be fair, you're saying that bad things might have happened via Magic Jack (that paragon of trustworthy companies)

| | magicJack the big loser? magicJack is the closest thing to free phone service charging what amounts to $1.70 per month. They're planning a softphone-only service by the end of September (called magicTalk).
Now Google beat MJ to market.
Unless MJ's infrastructure is better, and provides consistently higher quality, Google's expanded service seems like really bad news for MJ.

To scan ur voicemails so u get a transcript but actually its systems are using ur voicemails to see more on what u like that way Google knows even more about u .. So let's say u get a voicemail from work about buying post it .. U go to an adsense site which now a days is every site .. And guess what u see an ad for notes... I still use google anyways knowing that because hey if they can remind me to buy post its or w.e I need to get for cheap by an ad then hey win win right ?
