Dialer scam still big business; getting money back is hard

Computers make calls to far-off places in scam
BRIAN BARDWELL , Morning Journal Writer 08/07/2004

BERLIN HEIGHTS -- The Ohio Consumers' Counsel is warning Internet users to pay closer attention for a scam that's costing some victims hundreds of dollars a month for long-distance charges to far-flung countries such as Afghanistan, Liechtenstein, Sao Tome and Nauru.

The scam works like this, Lippe says: You use a dial-up connection to access the Internet and eventually encounter a pop-up ad. Even though you close the ad, it installs a virus on your computer that tells it to dial a long-distance number for a country on the other side of the planet. You're charged for the call, and the company receiving the call gets the money.

$2042 phone bill

Im just writing to say that i to have felt the pain of this scam. We just received a 2042 dollar phone bill and are wondering if anything can be done to stop such an injustice. Truly the phone company had to know this was happening and if they did why was nothing done sooner. Why were we the people not informed sooner and why is it still happening. Someone please help me

Re: $2042 phone bill

when bell did the first rate scam everyone paid. i didnt, i wouldnt take no for an answer. i called and just said fine, i want to speak to someone higher up, and eventually ended up speaking to someone in the chairmans office. my long distance charges above the 20 dollar limit were cancelled. i saved about 600 dollars. ive found all of bells companies to easily bend to pressure if you approach them with a no way youre doing this to me attitude. its almost funny, i mean ive got free cell phones, cell phone contracts cancelled, and money, 100 dollars once, taken off of my phone bill 'for my time' in dealing with them about different problems. and an aside, im surprised theres not a class action suit on sympaticos price fixing of dsl rates (i was even told that they had a verbal agreement with a competing company on a set rate that they would both use by a sympatico employee). they actually strong arm smaller companies into putting on caps. one guy there even told me they legally had to cap dsl, which was not true, i have a wonderful dsl isp now, no cap.
