Computers make calls to far-off places in scam

BERLIN HEIGHTS -- The Ohio Consumers' Counsel is warning Internet users to pay closer attention for a scam that's costing some victims hundreds of dollars a month for long-distance charges to far-flung countries such as Afghanistan, Liechtenstein, Sao Tome and Nauru.
The scam works like this, Lippe says: You use a dial-up connection to access the Internet and eventually encounter a pop-up ad. Even though you close the ad, it installs a virus on your computer that tells it to dial a long-distance number for a country on the other side of the planet. You're charged for the call, and the company receiving the call gets the money.
