This problem is one of many that a friend of mine and his wife had. 3G didnt work, both phones had horrible lag problems when browsing things like contacts, programs would crash, and the phone would just reboot for no reason. They had to trade in their phones at least three times. Last time, with the exact same problems, Apple told them to get lost and wouldn't replace the phones. Refused to honor the warranty even though their Genius Bar confirmed it was all phone problems and nothing they did but still refused to replace the phones. Makes me want to run out and buy one...

So far today my phone has rebooted itself may 20+ times w/constant freezing for minutes before it responds. I have not really had issues with droppped calls. But it switches alot between Edge and 3g.
So far the phone has sucked big time.

But we can't deny that people are having problems with iPhones; that would be silly. That's like claiming there were no problems with MobileMe and Apple gave members 90 days of free service for the F of it.
You have the cellphone generation equation, the iPod generation factor, and the old guard from when Apple was Apple Computer and not Apple Inc. coming together under a banner of hype backed by Chinese mass assembly lines under economic stress and QC/QA problems (partly because they're overseas to begin with). It must be a real mess to manage.
To answer your question, I'd say the stories sell themselves. If iPhone stories didn't generate hits I doubt the site would publish them on the front page.
The Love/Hate question is a tougher nut. Brand evangelism; corporate identification - the pathologies are endless. It's safe to say that the iPod generation doesn't really care so much for various reasons (Daddy bought the phone?), the iPhone acolytes love the thing like a red-headed stepchild, and the old-guard get their panties in a twist whenever an Apple boo-boo gets more attention than they think it should. It's hard to separate out the phones from the pods from the notebooks from the desktops for some people.
I think the gadget thing will fatten the bottom line but flatten the computer line in the end. One thing is for sure; this is putting stress on support costs, and exchanges and freebies will, at some point, have to stop as a way to make the baby stop crying.

| No problems here... I had a few dropped calls yesterday but none of them happened today. We also had dense fog and bad weather yesterday so I can hardly attribute them to the update. So far it has been smooth sailing and the GPS does seem to work better. I can't comment on the 3G issue as I live in a small area where there is no 3G. Edge works fine though if I have a signal.
I'm on Mount Desert Island and I get my cell signal from another island near by. There are also a lot of hills and mountains here the phone has to contend with but it works in places other people say there phone won't work so I'm happy.
Overall I'm happy with the 2.0.2 update, although I do know one person who was not so lucky and he lost all his apps. I just think there are a lot more people without problems not writing about it than there are people with problems that are writing about it.

You sound like someone who either hates Apple or has totally unrealistic expectations of new devices/technology/products.
Most products have issues and bugs in them for the first few generations.
As for your quip that Apple can't get 3G right, they have been producing phones for a little more than a year. Companies like Sony, for example, have been producing products for YEARS and still have problems with some of their products.
And your comparison of the Palm 750 to the 3G iPhone is seriously flawed. The iPhone is a second gen product from Apple, whereas the Palm 750 is at least a fifth generation product. -- --- Eleven years of carrying The Clue Bat...

| Apple's "Damage Control" So Apple has finally admitted to their new phones having "reception issues" and that the update was meant to fix these. I have not read in any forum that their poor working phone was "fixed" by the update, actually the reverse seems to be happening. someone, probably Apple, is putting it out there that the infineon chip is the problem and that it may take 6 months to fix. DO NOT BELIEVE any of it, as a former Apple fan I am outraged that any corporation could be acting so badly. This is simply "damage control" and anyone with a phone is going to pay a price for it should they decide not to return them immediately- even those with perfect phones, while they can. This phone is exactly what could be called "a Lemon" a combination of a rush to market, bad engineering, bad manufacturing and bad quality control is what has happened, probably with the connector between the amplifier and the antenna, which if so creates a real risk to even the working phones down the line. The decisions being made by Apple are worse than poor, they are downright irrational! | |

| Apple's silence is appalling Why do people keep defending Apple? They messed up. All these people with problems are not lying. My iPhone does not work properly, plain and simple. I have no reason to lie or bash Apple.
Jobs pushed a product to release that wasnt ready, now I like many others are dealing with the consequences.
There are many people who have an iPhone with issues who are willing to wait it out if Apple would just come out and admit there is a problem and let us know they will make it right one way or another.
Apple is the one who produces commercials bashing PCs, so when they fuck up, its time to get the bashing in return. They set themselves up for this, now they have to deal with it.
Im appalled as a consumer at the way Apple has handled this and I actually like Apple. Why has Apple been silent while its past present and future consumers complain about their experiences with the iPhone 3G? Why do they treat us as though we are not intelligent enough to understand if there are issues? Why not reassure us that Apple is working diligently to correct the issues? Why not inform us what is included in an update so we can make a valid judgment if our phones are not working properly even with a fix?
After this fiasco, I wont rush to get a new Apple product but wait until its been fully tested by the guinea pigs which are the general public. -- TOOL-"I will find a center in you.
