DirecTV 11 Satellite Launched Successfully
On its way to 99.2 degrees West Longitude

Dish Network ran into serious problems this week when a new satellite they were planning to rent capacity from failed to reach orbit. DirecTV had better luck, with the launch of their latest satellite (DirecTV 11) going off without a hitch yesterday afternoon after some early launch delays. Some satellite geek speak from the press release:

A Zenit-3SL rocket lifted off at 3:48 pm PDT (22:48 GMT) from the Odyssey Launch Platform, positioned at 154 degrees West Longitude, precisely on schedule. All systems performed nominally throughout the flight. The Block DM-SL upper stage inserted the 5,923 kg (13,058 lb) DIRECTV 11 satellite into geosynchronous transfer orbit, on its way to a final orbital position at 99.2 degrees West Longitude. Acquisition of the spacecraft’s first signals from orbit is expected in another few hours and will be reported when confirmed.

The new bird should expand DirecTV's HD capacity from 100 to 150 HD channels.

Vast Wasteland

So many channels, so little to watch.

Re: Vast Wasteland

The competition for sponsors is so bad that most re-run the same 5 or 10 commercials all day, everyday.

No kidding. When I signed up for FiOS TV I got the movie package (Showtime, Starz, Encore, plus a few other movie channels) along with HBO...something around 75 or 80 total channels plus VOD. Yet I still can't find a movie often that really compels me to watch.

Nice

It will be 4 or 5 months before they flip the switch, and go live, alot of testing to be done.

Good work sea launch.

Boeing 702 spacecraft for a life of 15 years. They are starting to make them last alittle bit longer now.

Very good work. They were spot on with the inclination and perigee and just 2.8 km high on the apogee (which is an error of 0.0077% and well within the acceptable error of 103 km)!

You will see the death of Dish Network begin in about six months. They can't do anything right.

Congrats to Directv on a job well done.

If I had a dime for every time someone stated DN was going to fail, I'd be rich. Seriously, how did Dish do anything wrong seeing as it wasn't their bird in the first place-they were simply going to lease space on it to regain transponder space lost on an existing bird that primarily serves the east coast only(61.5 degrees). Assuming it was going to be used for HD locals, I don't see it as much as an issue as if push comes to shove you can put up an off-air antenna and receive HD locals OTA.

Weren't DirecTV and Dish trying to merge a couple of years ago.

If DirecTV keeps this up, Dish may become a takeover target.

How quickly people forget. Wasn't it just last year (or was it 2006?) when Sea Launch had a couple of launch failures that left the Spaceway satellites grounded for months and months?

God forbid we go a little farther back and note that DirecTV has had a few of them fail to reach orbit themselves.

Not that I think Dish is worth anything as a TV provider, but that's for reasons unrelated to satellites or their launch.

It's wierdo, not weirdo. Yes, I know that's not the 'proper' spelling of the similar english language word.

The problem is that right now is a transistion period with people buying HD sets. When people spend the money on an HD set they will want a provider that offers the most HD.

Dish Network is in a tough position right now. The only way for them to compete is on price and hardware superiority. This will lead to lost revenue and profit.

I think they will both survive, but now, and for the immediate future, Dish Network is looking very much like the poor cousin.

Re: Dish Network is going to get killed

I hate to say this, but Dish Network is my free access to all the latest PPV's, because their Nagravision encryption sucks so bad, a 2 year old can hack it... Sorry DishNetworks... Thanks!!!!!!

Re: Dish Network is going to get killed

lol

they are actually doing a cardswap and replacing Nagra (once again)...

"During 2005, we replaced our smart cards in order to reduce theft of our service. However, the smart card replacement did not fully secure our system, and we have since implemented software patches and other security measures to help protect our service. Nevertheless, these security measures are short-term fixes and we remain susceptible to additional signal theft. Therefore, we have developed a plan to replace our existing smart cards and/or security chips to re-secure our signals for a longer term which will be implemented later this year. The project is expected to take approximately nine to twelve months to complete. While our existing smart cards installed in 2005 remain under warranty, we could incur operational costs in excess of $50 million in connection with our smart card replacement program."
" Increases in theft of our signal, or our competitors’ signals, also could cause subscriber churn to increase in future periods. There can be no assurance that our existing security measures will not be further compromised or that any future security measures we may implement will be effective in reducing theft of our programming signals."

it will take 6-8 months and I'm guessing it will be compromised in the same time frame after.
