DirecTV, Alcatel-Lucent Partner For VDSL2 Video
'Not to be confused with IPTV,' insists press release
by Karl Bode Thursday 29-Apr-2010 tags: Video · business · hardware · alternatives · DIRECTV
Alcatel-Lucent has dropped us a line to note that the company has partnered with DirecTV for what they're calling an "industry first": delivering DirecTV video services via VDSL2. According to the company, they've partnered with DirecTV to use existing phone wires to help deliver video in the 1,296-unit condo community of Shelter Creek in San Bruno, California. While many cable and phone companies are targeting greenfield (newly built) development communities with fiber to the home, DirecTV and Alcatel-Lucent apparently hope to carve out a niche in already-built brownfield deployments:

The Shelter Creek project is the largest installation using DIRECTV’s IPAdvantage technology and provides a model for offering DIRECTV’s services portfolio to large, older properties where rewiring poor-quality coaxial cable is not cost-effective or feasible. Using the existing, in-building telephone wiring is significantly less expensive and extends the investment in that infrastructure. It also minimizes the aesthetic impact on the community as well as inconvenience to residents.

DirecTV normally uses in-home coaxial to deliver TV services from the dish to the consumer's set top (and it's not clear that this solution is substantially better than coax, or a dozen other in-building networking options). The company insists this technology is "not to be confused with IPTV," and converts DirecTV video signals into IP video packets to IP-enabled receivers over a single home-run wire, delivering satellite TV, VoIP and data from a private "on property" head-end to each dwelling. DirecTV's almost-but-not-quite-interesting move comes three years after the FCC banned (sort of) exclusive cable development deals.

hmm

So basically one satellite dish needed that receives all the channels and then delivered to each condo or unit by phone wire?

Wouldnt it be better to do it via MOCA and use the coax?

Or HPNA, or G.hn, or ... etc. Lots of better choices for in-building wiring than VDSL2.

Re: hmm

Depends. If you want to use copper wiring (cheap, easy to work with vs. coax) in a limited-length loop, VDSL does a very good job...it's also a dedicated (possibly symmetric) circuit between point A and point B, something that in-building coax isn't. So you have 50-100 Mbps of capacity per user, rather than more capacity spread out over the whole 1,296 units; you'd need multiple cable nodes to service that.

Re: hmm

But if they are sending the signal to everybody anyway and you still need a box then why not moca?

Re: hmm

It sounds like they're doing unicast. So they aren't sending the signal to everybody.

HPNA distance limitations. VDSL2 a much better solution, plus it works just as good over old crappy quad(4 wire untwisted) I-wire.

Verizon said No Thanks!

This was a venture proposed by Dtv when Verizon still had a relationship with them but shot down very fast by Verizon. This has merit as a TV service, however.. most consumers would be more concerned about the broadband than the Tv service. The "merit" of the plan is to not have dozens to hundreds of pizza pie dishes littering the grounds of pristine housing-- making it look like an inner city complex. How can direct-tv turn down new WILLING customers on any gainful terms... hehe

Also, this is a niche project and *not* a one size fits all thing.

mrweatherman, do you realize your cable system is satellite fed too. Satellite systems only go out in the rain if they're on the edge anyways. Properly installed satellite systems are fine in all but the heaviest storms (that take out cable system headends too!)

I have directv premier, 9 receivers, mlb, nhl, and charter hd expanded basic (I get it cheaply, it lowers my internet bill).

We have tons of bad storms in metro atlanta, and a few snow storms this past winter. Only once the past year has directv been out for more then one hour, and that was when it was snowing 3" per hour all day (yet only caught 1" due to it being 40 degrees at the time)

Even then, there was only a couple times where directv was out for close to an hour, and that was in a couple VERY heavy thunderstorms with hail. Generally speaking, I can watch directv in really heavy thunderstorms and not have issues.

It's less miserable if you work at a job that requires you to be outside all day, for one.

I love cloudy days.

DirecTV does this type of install all over the country (using one or two dishes with a custom built headend). Many apartment complexes choose to stay out of their residents entertainment services/bills which means less $$$ they spend on keeping up any network.

Many apartment complexes are also littered with these dishes due to if someone gets one shut off for non-payment they'll go to another company and sign service up with them with no problem.
