| Would be a nice feature. I'm a DirecTV sub and would like this. But I wouldn't go about getting all new hardware for it unless they gave me the upgraded hardware for free. I currently have 7 STBs, all HD 2 of which are DVRs also. It would be very expensive to upgrade all the boxes if that is what would be required to get this feature. I can certainly live with pressing the fast forward button 4 times and then waiting about 5-8 seconds and pressing play to skip all the commercials. | |

| Re: Would be a nice feature. I would like to have this too. I had it on SageTV for a long time and found it to be a great time saver.
Dish and DTV should charge people $7 or so per month for this "feature" and give a cut of that to the broadcasters. That should shut them up. Then they can litter the bottom 1/3rd of the screen with a bunch of crap that blocks most of what you are trying to watch. I tried watching Friends on TV Land and when Joey went to race the ducks, a giant banner completely blocked what was going on. Joey looked to be staring at the floor hollering for no reason.

| Technically it should just be a software update. There is a small amount of black, almost almost un-perceivable before jumping to commercial. The software should detect this and FF through the commercials.
I had a VCR that did something very similar. -- No, I didn't. Honest... I ran out of gas. I... I had a flat tire. I didn't have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town. Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake.......

| | Patents? I would bet that it's more likely DirecTV will sue Dish for patent infringment. | |
|
| | | Re: Patents? very true. And it would happen if Dish is allowed to move forward it with it. But DirecTV isn't going to put it out due to being sued by the content owners and later rate hikes for programming. Let someone else be the guinea pig then sue the hell out of them.
I'm sure TIVO will be in here next with their lawsuits for "time shifting"

Looks like a smart move by DirecTV. Wait for Dish to fight the legal battles with content providers and then decide what to do after that fight is over. Of course, that means don't expect to see auto ad-skipping from DirecTV for a year or more.

| | I don't mind ads I enjoy watching them from time to time. What I don't enjoy watching are ads that aren't for me (e.d. meds, women's health care, bladder control etc.) and I also don't enjoy watching the same ad 50 times during a football/golf/hocket broadcast.
Give me an option to skip what I don't want to watch, let me watch what I do want to watch. Let me decide.
Advertisers: I still see your ad when it matters to me.

| | Networks will play hardball If you think retrans negotiations are bad now, just wait until auto ad skipping comes online.
Tv networks don't produce content for free. Ad dollars mostly pay for it. Remove the ad dollars, TV will have to either seek alternative revenue streams or die.

Go for it That type of rate increase will have the industry meeting the proverbial camel and that pesky straw... I think what will happen is this if ad skipping stands:
TV networks gradually but steadily (more so than now) increase their retransmission fees
Ads will be shown during the show itself
TV will become much lower quality (even moreso than now), with cheap to produce reality shows becoming the dominant TV show type. Say goodbye to expensive dramas and sitcoms. They will be rare, and probably confined to channels like HBO.
What won't happen is the TV networks, executives and staff deciding to make less money because it fits with someone's desire to watch TV ad free.

What these people will and will not accept is up to them; but from personal experience, when the company comes to you and says "Sorry John, our current revenue stream will simply not support your current salary level and we are instituting a 40% salary cut across the entire work force including management.", most will have to take the cut or go unemployed.
It is happening in every industry for the workers and will eventually get to the executive washroom as well. Given the current state of the economy, many will realize that there ARE no jobs that they could jump ship for that would not have the same level of compensation reductions so they are damned if they do and damned if they don't.
Given this, your model would simply hasten the end - it's that simple... -- Returnil - 21st Century body armor for your PC

Well, other then greed, that is.

REality is that retrans fees WILL rise. The TV networks own the content, and if you screw with them, they can not play ball.
Apart from public television, TV is not a charity. It's a business. If it's not making money, or making less money, it will start to figure out how to make more.

| | I hope ad skipping gets turned down... I'm content with manually fast forwarding through ads now. If companies implement an auto ad jumping feature in their DVR's, we will just start seeing ads in other ways (which I'm sure will be more invasive). | |

I was watching a TV series last year, in which Huyndai was providing the cars. The actors actually spent time in a dialogue going over the "features" of the car. That was so bloody obvious it wasn't funny. -- No, I didn't. Honest... I ran out of gas. I... I had a flat tire. I didn't have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. Everytime someone scores, a flash ad for someone like Southwest Airlines, the shot clock is an ad, and the announcers have to plug the head coach's suit store. The only thing missing is the jerseys being full size ads like they are in the WNBA. I can already see the Suns name being replaced with Casino Arizona.

| | ReplayTV rules We still have a heavily-modded ReplayTV 5000-series hooked up to an old TV in our guest/exercise room. A decade later, it's still a better DVR than Tivo ever was. The commercial skip feature is like magic. | |
