| Re: It is expensive but good service I just got reinstalled after a 1 year hiatus. While the HR20 is not as intuitive, IMO, as the TiVo, it is a pretty nice unit. In addition, the eSATA ports are active on them and you can install an external HD on them. People have been reporting buying a Seagate FreeAgent 750GB and connecting it up with no issues. | |

Being a former TiVo user myself, I find the HR20-100 model DVR quite easy to use. Also, from my understanding, you can plug in a external eSATA drive and use that for additional storage (Just can't use it WITH the internal drive, just one or the other).

This should work just fine for the HR20. About the only downside is a lack of Dual Live Buffers like the Tivo. There is some guy I know that has 3TB hooked up to his HR20.

For anyone that wants lots of DirecTv info goto » www.dbstalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=82 Also this article is a little miss leading as the issue is with spot beams on D10 and only effects local network HD stations and not the national 100 channels of HD they will have by the end of the year. DirecTV had planed on using spot beams on D10 for local HD for some markets, they will still be for some, but the others will be on the older satellites for now. They state it will not stop any scheduled local HD roll outs. Also important to point out that the new HD channels will be broadcast mpeg-4, which the older DirecTivo's can't receive. | Re: Waiting for the price increase said by esojmc :Can shows be extracted from the HR20 (in Hi Def. preferably) onto a PC for storage off line? Not a chance. Due to provisions of the Digital Millenium Act passed by congress, the recorded content is only playable on the receiver it was recorded on. The content is encoded on the hard drive using a combination of techniques including the access card, hard drive serial number, and CPU serial number of the receiver. Change any one of these and it won't be accessible.
However, that being said, you can play back the HD content and re-record it through certain video cards which accept component (analog) HD inputs. Neither DVI nor HDMI are able to be re-recorded due to the encoded information that is exchanged between devices on these digital video busses. The DirecTV receiver knows whether it connected to a display device or to another type of recording device and will not play back to a recorder.

DIRECTV 10 In-Orbit Testing Underway
EL SEGUNDO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Sept. 14, 2007--The DIRECTV 10 satellite, launched on July 6, 2007, has been successfully placed in geo-synchronous orbit and is currently undergoing in-orbit testing. The testing process has confirmed that the satellite is fully functional to deliver all planned nationwide HD programming. This will enable DIRECTV to deliver up to 100 HD channels nationwide by year-end.
The DIRECTV 10 satellite's transponder payload also includes spot-beam capacity that will support the expansion of DIRECTV's local HD channel services. While testing of DIRECTV 10's capability continues, it appears that a portion of the anticipated spot-beam capability may not be fully available. The investigation to determine the cause of the reduced capability and potential means to mitigate its effect is on-going. However, we currently believe our planned expansion of HD local programming as previously announced will not be materially affected.
The launch of DIRECTV 11 is still scheduled for late this year or early next year, on a Sea Launch launch vehicle.

1 edit | Just because it's new fancy MPEG-4 (as opposed to MPEG-2) doesn't mean they still won't downgrate it a bit to save some bandwidth just like they do now.
MPEG-4/2 are just compression methods. What is actually being compressed may be at a lower quality and this is what was referred to above as 'downrezzed'. -- »www.fairtax.org

| ah ha good to see more on this.. it's been fuzzy for a long time now as to when things will launch. i guess in part because it's reliant on new stuff that's not deployed.
I heard this AM that CNN HD will be avail on Directv Wednesday the 19th, which seems to coincide with some of what was said on that other forum...
Directv will soon add a new $5 add on HD package for the channels that don't have SD feeds... yet another attempt to steal more money and increase my bill. oh boy. i guess i can do without Universal HD ... though it's a bit of a scam that they consider that to not have a SD counterpart--it's NBC essentially. (will they consider Discover HD theater to be part of discover or is that part of the $5 add on as well? Hmm)

| if you tune to your channel guide you'll notice a series of test channels around 498/499... one of them is actual HD from the new satellite.
over the weekend there were two test channels, channel 9300 and 9301 that were turned up with actual live HD channels from the new Directv 10 satellite... they had Discovery and National Geographic on them.. only for a few hours though...
directv never promised that all of the new channels would be availbale in september. but last i had heard they are planning to release some of them in september, possibly this week.
they're having problems with the new satellite for spot beaming local HD channels to certain geographic regions (the north side of the country from what i understand). i think the holdback is that they're trying to fix these perhaps, and doing so requires taking the satellite offline ... from what i understand if they are unable to fix these, they still will have the capacity they need by re-allocating the channels on various satellites.. but i think they're trying to delay putting the satellite fully online as much as possible in september while they can possibly fix this issue.
