DirecTV Launches 11 More HD Channels
32 new HD channels in just the past few weeks...

DirecTV users say the company continues to push its way toward its goal of 100 new HD channels by year's end, and this morning at 6AM EST launched eleven new HD channels:

•Comcast Sportsnet Chicago (640)

•Comcast Sportsnet Mid-Atlantic (629)

•New England Sports Net (NESN) (623)

•SportsNet New York (625)

•YES (622)

•Cinemax East (512)

•Cinemax West (514)

•HBO West (504)

•Bravo (273)

•SciFi (244)

•USA (242)

This comes on the heels of last week's launch of 21 new HD channels. As we've mentioned, users will need to upgrade to the company's MPEG-4 capable HR-20 DVR, which will be the centerpiece of the company's as-yet-unreleased broadband-based on-demand service.

Finally !

And the lord said unto the people "Go forth and yeah shall receive High Def from the heavens"

All kidding aside how great is this. They just keep adding HD content. Any other provider want to step up and keep adding it as well ?

Comcast added at least TBS for our baseball joy , but no other provider is stepping up and delivering more HD content. Guess at the end of the month Dishnetwork just lost me to Directv. And comcast is definitely out. Hope FiOS comes around here as well as adds more HD as well.

I have been waiting for SciFi in HD since I first got my receiver. It seems like it should have been the first channel to go HD.

But now the downside......I see SciFi HD in my channel list, and I can watch it. But it doesn't appear to actually be broadcasting an HD signal. There isn't a single HD tagged show in the guide, including Friday nights first run Stargate Atlantis episode.

as a side question, anyone know how existing season passes will be handled with the new HD channels having the same number? Will they season pass (series link) continue recording on the SD channel, or will it auto switch to the new HD?

1 - the fact that the channel is HD does not mean that the content being supplied to D* by the network is HD.
Several other of the new channels (Showtime is one I know for sure) did not have "HD" tags on some content, but it was definitely in HD. I strongly suspect that the Stargate stuff will be in HD.....

2 - Season Pass/series recording will NOT automatically shift to the HD channel. You'll need to add the HD version (then probably delete the SD version) manually.

SciFi doesn't flip the HD switch until November for the season premiere of BattleStar Galactica. So Dish is just blowing smoke up your ass when they say they have an HD channel. The cable cos are quick to add the HD channel ONCE it goes HD.

Resolution?

Do the new MPEG-4 channels sport HD-Lite resolutions, or are the 1080i channels in full 1920*1080?

Re: Resolution?

It's not a matter of resolution, it's a matter of quality. Current HD-Lite for certain channels is full 1080i resolution, it just looks like crap from the compression settings used.

I do not have it yet, but I have seen it. This is not HD-Lite. Many people at the various boards (dbstalk, satelliteguys) all say the same thing. The biggest problem has been that some stations (particularly TBS) do all sorts of upscaling as many of the syndication is in SD, thus making the quality poor. But, anything in true form looks fantastic.

Re: Resolution?

I was under the impression that 1080i MPEG-2 channels on DirecTV were sent at 1440x1080i or 1280x1080i. I want to know if they are still doing this to the MPEG-4 channels, or if they are now sending 1920x1080i for the new MPEG-4 channels.

Re: Resolution?

No one has yet had access to the source material to determine if 'down-rezzing' is taking place.

At this time it is strictly a "what does your eye tell you" judgment. People who have both OTA HD locals and D* locals seem to indicate that the difference is very slight, if even visible at all. Of course, such judgments depend on the HDTV, the receiver, and the signal - a lot of variables.

I'm with you, this is going to put real pressure on a lot of people, especially with Comcast raising their rates so frequently.

I'd need to evaluate up front equipment costs before making a jump, but it's getting tempting.

Re: Good for them!

Yes indeed. I'd love to see what Comcast does. I was just at DTV.com looking up packages and want DVR on one TV while HD on my computer since I have a HD monitor and a standard box on the other TV we have.

I can't seem to find a package that fits that, but I didn't dig too deep yet.

Another concern is weather and trees screwing with the picture. We have a ton of trees around and it rains quite a bit here.

Still, lower bill, better picture and better picture quality and more HD channels is very tempting.

Let's hope Comcast gets off their ass and competes... (Yeah, like that'll happen, right?)

I came home from vacation this weekend pleasantly suprised to see the following HD channels had been added to my Comcast lineup:

NFL HD
A&E HD
HGTV HD
National Geo HD
FoodTV HD
TBS HD (Just in time for Phillies/Yankees Playoffs in HD)

I think that, including locals, I have somewhere around 34 HD channels. I do have all premiums, so that is a major plus in the HD department.

Bottom line - Not the lineup that DirecTV has coming out now, but definately a solid upgrade for all of the dough that I am putting out on them.

More HD is great, but...

Most of what they added was just regional sports networks. Where is the "other" stuff?

Quite frankly I wouldn't watch a single channel that was added in this 'sweep'.

I hope D* isn't going to use RSNs and off the beaten path networks to quantify their "100 HD Channels" ...

Sports Channels...

Does the whole country get all the sports channels, or is something like NESN limited only to the New England (Red Sox) market place?

If they get the sports package I think you can get the channel, though most games are blacked out, so you could not watch the Bruins/Sox/Celtics if they are showing the game.

I have no idea what policy NESN has. Most but not all of the RSNs allow them to be offered with major sports blackouts outside their own region. The blackouts of the actual games protect the premium out of market packages such as MLB Extra Innings and render OOM RSNs virtually worthless. Even if NESN is offered in Oregon you won't see live Red Sox or Bruins games there.

Re: Sports Channels...

And here I was thinking blackouts were to protect the ability of a team to fill the stands. For example, the Red Sox game might be blacked out in Boston if there was no sell out. I'm not sure how the Red Sox would be protecting themselves by being blacked out in Oregon unless the game was being broadcast nationally and FOX (the national broadcaster) was pissed. How does MLB Extra Innings apply? They broadcast every baseball game played during the season so there would always be competition with them.

Re: Sports Channels...

Red Sox games are always on TV, sell out or not. They will almost always be on NESN, NESN has always had very good coverage. If I were to sign up for MLB extra innings, the Red Sox game on Extra Innings would be blacked out for me.

Great to see the competition

Direc tv has really steped it up thier year. Launching a bunch of hd channels and soon to come ondemand and remote booking. I'm glad to see some good competition to comcrap. From what I have seen vod with directv works great as well.

And unlike AT&T's U-Verse, DirecTV actually lets you consume as many streams as your heart desires. Personally I have 2 HD-DVR's and 1 HD receiver in the house.

As a formal DirecTV & DishNetwork customer now this comcast

I thought at some point DishNetwork had the most HD Channels, specially after they took over VOOM.

Anyway, Directv needs to make their DVR-HD receiver more affordable (like comcrap does) or at least lease it to it's customers.

I'm not very pleased with the comcast HD lineup, but they turned out to be cheaper.

Not just the HR20

More than just the HR20 can get MPEG4 channels. You need either the H20/H21 or if you want a DVR the HR20/HR21. I know most will want the HR models (it's what I have ) but it's worth noting it's not required.

Do they even have the satellite capacity? I seem to remember that DirectTV launched extra satellites (although first slated for broadband) to be able to offer that many HD channels.

HD-DVR

I just had Direct TV installed a week ago. You can get a HD Receiver for free or DVR. You cannot get a HD-DVR for free.
I had to shell out 200.00 for mine. I got the newest one offering all the new HD channels. Let me tell you quality is superior compared to Cox out here! And they don't charge you a rental fee for your DVR Box like cable companies.

HD/DVR does cost ye big bucks!!!

Directv DOES charge ye a fee for the HD/DVR! 4.99 per month over and above your 9.95 HD channel charge, if you don't get the 70 per month HD/DVR package. I paid 250.00 at Best Buy for my HD/DVR, and discovered after I got it that I had to have Direct TV for 2 years, and pay the 4.99 fee, and I was only LEASING the box, not buying it, as my Best Buy rep stated. If you cancel service before the two years are up, you will get hit with a 249.00 fee. I'm regretting this badly, as I just became disabled, and unable to work, and Direct TV won't help me get out of this mess, even though I've been a customer for over 3 years. (Only had the HD since Feb of this year).

Yes, they are real & they are incredible.

Actually, I have D* & it is wonderfull (thus far). All channels are coming at the resolution of the provider so 1920x1081i for most & 1280x720p for those few who send that.

I do kinda agree about the RSN's. Without the live games, who cares. I think E* does show the out of market games, but I will stick with D* as they seem to be (for now) leading us into the HD promised land

Fluffing their numbers again.

All that Direct is doing, doubling the numbers. If you take away the duplicated feeds, in reality Direct does not have as many HD feeds as they are stating to have.
