With a few minor conditions, the FCC yesterday
approved (pdf) the transfer of DirecTV from News Corporation to Liberty Media. Liberty Media has repeatedly stated they might be getting the satellite TV provider back into the broadband business. Last June Clearwire
announced they'd struck a deal with both DirecTV and Echostar to resell WiMax, but the deal has laid dormant while Liberty awaited regulatory approval.
For those of you with memories longer than a year, you might recall that DirecTV's previous attempts in the broadband business didn't go so well. DirecTV's attempt to offer DSL ended badly, with a collapsed business model and a long line of still bitter
broadband refugees. Their satellite broadband effort didn't fare much better. Will the third time be a charm?
