DirecTV to take a third shot at providing broadband?

With a few minor conditions, the FCC yesterday approved (pdf) the transfer of DirecTV from News Corporation to Liberty Media. Liberty Media has repeatedly stated they might be getting the satellite TV provider back into the broadband business. Last June Clearwire announced they'd struck a deal with both DirecTV and Echostar to resell WiMax, but the deal has laid dormant while Liberty awaited regulatory approval.

For those of you with memories longer than a year, you might recall that DirecTV's previous attempts in the broadband business didn't go so well. DirecTV's attempt to offer DSL ended badly, with a collapsed business model and a long line of still bitter broadband refugees. Their satellite broadband effort didn't fare much better. Will the third time be a charm?

Re: So.........

Naa not that kind of rate increase. You know the Corp transition fee or whatever they are gunna call it. I wonder how much they will hit us for. I just see something like that coming.

Gone are the old days

Remember when satellite advertised every time cable had a rate increase how they were cheaper than cable? Remember the old days when directv did not have a rate hike for 6 years? Exactly why I kicked them to the curb and watch TV shows on the internet for free. Tired of paying $50 a month for access to more commercials.

It Can Be Cheaper

Call them and negotiate a better deal so it is cheaper than cable. I have, for the past five years, not paid a single "mirroring fee" because each and every time they try to pull the discount, I threaten to leave for cable.

Whatever the best deal is for your local cable company is, DirecTV will beat it. If you don't have cable, fake it.

Re: It Can Be Cheaper

yea I have to agree with you. I am on my first run with direct. My favorite part is when dish or cable after you leave call and have a special deal for you to come back. I always tell them maybe next year when the low price contract is over. I will have to see which service wants to give me the best price for the year. I can't speak for the rest of you but to me the available channels on dish, direct, and cable are all about the same.

Yes, Rates Are Going Up

I just got a notice in the mail. Unless you are locked into a current contract. Then, after the contract they will go up.

Bitter?

Not me. I have better service from a locally owned ISP now, at 4 times the DL speed.
