But they won't overpay to make it happen...
(old news - 07:25PM Wednesday Apr 04 2007)
tags: satellite · Video · competition · business · wireless
Back before Rupert Murdoch sold his "turd bird" (aka DirecTV) to Liberty Media, it was assumed that DirecTV would get into the broadband business by partnering with a WiMax provider. Now that the satellite company is owned by Liberty, they've said they still want to get into the broadband sector, despite the company's history of previous failed attempts. Judging from this Motley Fool report, they're not being any more forthcoming on how exactly they plan to do this, but they are looking for partners. As it stands, DirecTV's market strength still comes directly from their exclusive NFL package (and their more recent Major League Baseball deal) -- but they need a broadband component if they want to do battle on the triple-play front.

Direct TV

Direct TV is already in somewhat of a broadband partnership with Verizon. Verizon offers a triple play freedom package which includes Direct TV service

?????

Is it the singing or the dancing? I give her an A+ on both, not that I like everything she does, but objectively she has skills in both areas. If music and dance aren't art, then what is?

That's exactly my point. Yes, technically she's an artist but we're not talking about @$#%!@ Van Gogh.

DirecTV does the same with Qwest here in my town. Either you can sign up for DirecTV through Qwest, or you can sign up for Qwest/MSN DSL through DirecTV.

Pray

Pray they don't strike a deal with Hughes Net or WildBlue so they can use just one dish for high speed internet and tv.

Edit: I can't see them partnering with a cable company either. That would be downright dumb.

Re: Pray

Even with such a partnership, using one single dish is highly unlikely in most markets, especially with HD, as the HD dish picks up five satellites on it's own. It would be way too difficult to aim a single dish to pick up 5 DirecTV birds and a WildBlue bird.

Triple Play?

Do battle on the triple-play front? They don't even have a double play. All they offer is TV. IF the were to add broadband, THAT would be a double-play. I don't see how they could offer a triple play at all.

That said, I think they need to focus on TV, not broadband, since they are a TV provider. What I mean by this is that they need to focus on providing high-def channels. If they want to stay competitive to cable and Dish, they need to offer lots of HD. They launched two new birds last January for HD locals, and I still can't get them in my market. And they talk of having over 100 HD channels soon, but how?

Don't get me wrong, you all know I am a DirecTV fanboy, but that is because since 1999, they have been the best TV provider I have found, whether in large metro area or the sticks. I just hope they stay that way. And I want more HD, dammit.

Not really relevant if the data pipeline immediately gets you two of the three....

OK, I get it. You are referring to DirecTV offering broadband which will provide internet and VoIP.

Right?

If I'm not mistaken, those two birds are not due to be launched until later this year. I expect we will probably start seeing more HD in the fourth quarter.

I think you are thinking of different birds. Last January, DirecTV launched two KA-band satellites in the 99 and 103 slots, specifically for HD local channels. I know this to be true, as last year when I was installing DirecTV, I installed plenty of These and These in order to recieve their signal.

gotta be Covad

With coverage of more than half the US, Covad is the largest broadband provider other than the regional Bells or cable companies. I had their service for many years and they were really good, until I moved to a location where there is no DSL even from the RBOC.

Re: gotta be Covad

Are you talking the service or the company? I'm thinking they should just buy the company.

As far as the service goes, if you buy through a reseller (not direct from Covad), the service is much more competitive.

I think Covad has about 300 million shares out @ $1.25. They also have a WiMax business. Hmmmm.

Covad is living on debt and they are getting worse each day. They have basically outsourced everything that could make them competitive to India, and they have no plans for when they are no longer able to rent copper (at outrageous prices).

And since one of their largest resellers recently got bought by Best Buy, I'm not so sure you're going to see BB continuing to use them when they could strike a better deal with the RBOCs...

I'm surprised they havent tried to resell any EVDO products yet. Or bought MMDS licenses and went that route.

They already blew it.. Telocity/Directv internet.

I was a Telocity/Directv dsl customer. They were one of the better DSL providers offering, bridged DSL connection(always on), Static IP, no port blocking, and allowed servers.

Directv purchased it and then killed it after the proposed merger with Echostar was blocked. 200K customers got a little over one months notice before they shut down. They sent out the notices on Dec 18, 2003, seven days before Christmas.

I don't trust Murdock enough to repeat that performance.

The answer is a plain as the nose on Bernard Ebbers face.

The 1996 Tel Com Act opens a utilities right of way to any and all that want to build a 400,000,000/400,000.000 connection into every Chickie coop in America. Maybe Ebbers is looking for that $400,000,000.00 he personally can't account for.

This is the Achilles Heel of Satellite TV

If it continues to be unable to offer a competitive broadband product on its own and has to depend on parterships with telcos and/or wireless companies, it will always have a disadvantage competing with cable and the phone companies.
