DirecTV, NFL Very Close to Renewing Sunday Ticket Deal
Reports indicate that DirecTV and the NFL are very close to renewing their controversial NFL Sunday Ticket deal, which gives DirecTV exclusive rights to broadcast out-of-market NFL games (and in turn blocks all manner of potentially more interesting streaming NFL services from ever being born). According to said reports, the annual cost of the deal for DirecTV should be somewhere between $1.3 billion and $1.4 billion. As we've noted previously, AT&T had the right to walk away from their acquisition of DirecTV if DirecTV wasn't able to renew this deal.

The NFL really doesn't want me to be a fan

Sorry I'm not getting DirecTv just to have Sunday Ticket. At least the NFL can force DirecTV to offer a streaming version even if one lives in an area that can get DirecTv.

I thought I read where they are offering a streaming version this year, where you don't need Directv to get it. I'm not positive about this tho.

Only if you live somewhere which can't be serviced by DirecTV. Which is exactly almost nowhere.

Many apartments. I wonder if you have trees blocking it at a house if that's a good enough excuse?

It should be, since there is no 100% guarantee that removing those trees would result in a high quality continuously reliable signal path.

You don't always have the option to remove trees or put up a dish.

True, my apartment faces North. Even if the landlord let me put a pole in the ground in the grass area to the side, there are numerous trees and a concrete retaining wall South of the grass area, so an antenna would not work.

You're fortunate in that your landlord let you put a pole on the property. Most landlords wouldn't hesitate to say "no".

Re: The NFL really doesn't want me to be a fan

The ability to use a pole was a few years ago and lasted only a short time. It seems the Cox cable company had too many video cancellations from our apartment complex and investigated. They told the owners in Atlanta what was happening and afterward the ability to use poles was taken away.

Wow, that's slimy, although not illegal, since poles aren't protected by OTARD.

Re: The NFL really doesn't want me to be a fan

The owners get deeply discounted services from Cox to run their business in exchange for strictly enforcing OTARD allowable limits. The poles were carefully placed by the installers such that they did not interfere with the landscaping or facility maintenance crews. No holes were drilled through walls. They used special inserts for sliding doors or windows to run the cable into the apartments.

Re: The NFL really doesn't want me to be a fan

When I have visited Atlanta I see the opposite in many rental locations. Lots of exterior wall mounted satellite antennas. Holes through exterior walls, but carefully sealed ones. The dislike of the cable pay TV providers was big in that area. In addition there were lots of immigrants and visitors from around the world. Satellite pay TV and Free To Air satellite is normal for many of them. A larger selection of channels from home country. That adds to the push to get landlords to allow installations that OTARD states can be, but not must be, banned.

Same here in Springfield, MA apartment buildings are decorated with DirecTV dishes. We have a large Puerto Rican population here and DirecTV has a huge lineup of Spanish language programming packages, they will only install the Slimline 5 dishes here as the Spanish channels come in on the 119 bird. Comcast has limited Spanish channels but DirecTV has had the Spanish language channels for years.

I also see the occasional DirecTV World Direct dish and FTA satellites.

Or move to a tenant friendly state like Massachusetts. I've heard it's difficult to evict tenants who don't pay let alone put a satellite dish up. The landlord down the hill has a no pets policy but there are plenty of cats and dogs down there as he knows he's facing an uphill battle evicting. He'll save the legal fees for non payment or drug activity.

No they will not allow you to get NFL Sunday Ticket if there are trees blocking the signal. About 3 years ago I tried to get Directv but could not get. it. About 300 to 400 ft there are a line of trees that is blocking the signal.
I mention it to the Directv rep about that and he said no I still can not get it.

Interesting. I guess they want people to pay a couple of grand for a tree crew to clear a path now just to watch football. Pathetic.

The problem with me is that the trees are not on my property or should say I rent so no cutting of trees.

What the NFL does not realize is that this deal is going to come back and bite them. Perhaps not in the short term but definitely in the long term. Fans have very long memories.

DirecTV buying a declining product

NFL broadcasts are still very hot because America is still in love with pro football. But that love affair may be at the beginnings of a decline. I love watching my home team (Phila Eagles) play, but the love is starting to fade as the NFL has modified rules to protect players from being injured due to fear of multi-billion dollar lawsuits. And I don't mean just "don't hurt the QB" rules. Rules on pass coverage and no touching at all beyond 5 yds has resulted in a blizzard of flags this season. So much so that I am seriously considering DVRing live football so that I can fast forward thru all the penalty calls. And rules for lineman have also been modified to cut down on hits at the line of scrimmage. Taking the violence out of pro football may be politically correct, but it also removes one of the reasons many people enjoy watching it.

In any case, I don't blame the NFL for locking in big dollars now in a long term contract. Get the money upfront before numbers of interested viewers start to decline.

Re: DirecTV buying a declining product

I agree.. Im an NFL fan, but in recent years the game has become watered down with all the dumb new rules.. Adding more rules only puts more pressure on the referees and judging by the amount of flags they threw this preseason, its not going to be a fun year. Im hoping DirecTV and the NFL both lose big revenue down the line because of the rules and exclusive deals they keep making.

It will take time for the player to get used to following the new rules. After they do so, there should be fewer penalty flags per game.

One reason Dish is cheaper

I believe that Directv's deal with the NFL is one reason that Directv is a little more expensive than Dish.

you think. let's see $1.3 billion a year only about 2 million actually subscribe. Most don't pay the $340 full price, but even if they did that only accounts for half the money. I wonder who is paying the other half?

Re: One reason Dish is cheaper

Commercial subscribers, where the minimum is just shy of $1300 this season. Just by randomly googeling maximum occupancy of chain restaurants like Chili's and Applebees, it seems to be around 200 people and would fall in the $5,700/season plan.

Sports bars and restaurants easily make that kind of money rather quickly by offering drink specials and attractive prices on meals.

Dish is cheaper because they don't a lot of sports(at least not NY sports), which is where a lot of Directv's money goes. Not only does Dish not have Sunday ticket but they also don't offer MLB EI if I recall. On top of that, if you are a NY sporst fan, forget it. They don't offer YES, SCNY or MSG network. Dish focuses more on movies and a few extra HBO's and such.

And that's why DirecTV is popular among those people who like to watch sports. If DirecTV ever loses the ST, they'll lose a lot of their customers.

NFL Streaming

I purchased Madden last year for the ability to stream Sunday Ticket last year. The picture and audio were not great. By the end of the season I found myself tuning into local broadcast games only because the picture and sound quality were so much better.

Re: NFL Streaming

Some of us don't live near out favorite teams so it sucks when you only get to see them once or twice a year. Why even bother being a fan?

gamepass is better

Use a DNS service like adfreetime or unotelly to make it look like you're in a different country and order NFL gamepass for $100 directly from the NFL. The quality of the program and stream is much better than sunday ticket.

RedZone

Honestly, I get to see about 98% of what I want with NFL RedZone - it's like NFL-ST, but with only one channel with an invisible person flipping between all of the games when the action dies down or commercials come on - not just when a team's offense is in the "red zone" as the product name implies. And my current provider is only charging me $5.50/month for it plus a bunch of other sports channels I could care less about.

F*** you NFL!

Can you hear me now? I grew up a fan but have stopped watching games due to your greed! This is a prime example: make multi-million dollar exclusive deals instead of making games widely available for the fans. I watch the Razorbacks locally in person now and get away from the TV with your spoiled, overpaid, pussy players and get some fresh air besides. Can you hear me now? Frankly, I don't give a f*** anymore except that leagues like this need to go away because our taxes pay for them to extort us for the games instead of deliver them, even with all the ads.
