Sunday Ticket broadband trial kicks off in NYC
09:37AM Monday Aug 17 2009 by Karl Bode
tags: satellite · business
For a few years DirecTV has been tinkering with a service that delivers video to the company's satellite customers via broadband, putting them on an interesting collision course with their cable and phone company competitors. When DirecTV recently extended their exclusive distribution deal with the NFL they included the right to deliver NFL games via broadband, something the company will begin testing this fall in NYC. According to USAToday, the service initially will only be made available to those customers who can't receive a satellite signal, and will cost a whopping $349 per season.

satellite broadband?

hope it works as well as Wild Blue. I have a feeling we will see this idea on the fail blog in a few months.

Re: satellite broadband?

this is for areas where the Sat signals are not available. Because they are block by BLDGs

$349 ???

While I love the irony of distributing the NFL package over the cable HSI network.... I say $349 is way to high for this. Their regular season package is 299 plus 100 with all the perks... and that comes in HD 1080p.

$200 for a PC delivery is better (fairly) priced.

No kidding. Thankfully this is an optional offering and not a required purchase with the other services!

If MLB.TV can offer around 180 days of games for $110, then the NFL games reallly should be cheaper than that due to only 17 days of programming. $349 a season is just far beyond reality. This really feels like a statistician's game (look, few people bought this package, so the demand for Internet delivery of games is small) or a silly ploy to convince more people to switch to DirecTV. All this pricing is going to do is further encourage the already rampant piracy of game broadcasts over the Internet, which will just financially hurt the league and DirecTV.

Why would they care? They don't own DirecTv. The $349 they are going to get now goes straight to the NFL. If 2 million more people sign up to DirecTv just to get Sunday Ticket the NFL doesn't get anymore money. DirecTv already paid them. If those 2 million take this deal that's $700 million in the NFL's pocket.

Read the USA Today article. DirecTV is running the broadband package or at least administering it, just like they did for SuperFan customers the last two years IIRC. They are just selling the Internet package portion to non-DirecTV subscribers this year.

I don't need to read. I've read the details when the NFL annoucned it MONTHS ago. I stand by my statement. the NFL is selling to NON-DirecTv customers. They make more money that way than getting those people to sign up to direcTv. I'm not quite sure what you are arguing about.

Or one person takes the deal, figures out how to rip the shows, then puts them on the torrents for free

why would I want to watch a game AFTER I know the result? because if I wanted to do that the NFL offers a post game viewing of all games for $40 for a whole season.

But that user could also stream it out live to anyone in the world in real time...

No, $200 is still too high. As a matter of fact, they offer a "Supercast" option to Ticket subscribers for only $100 right now!!! This is just for live viewing--no recording allowed--and archived games are not offered. Only for Sunday games (Monday and Thursday games are left out). This seems fair to me.

Even better, NFL.com has archived games for only $50/season. This option does not allow recording and no live games.

You can get this for free ...

and here's how.

If you're a current customer, call up and say you are considering canceling service. They have a promotion for new customers right now that gives the customer the Premier package (all the channels they offer plus premium channels) and the NFL Sunday Ticket for $59.99 a month. This doesn't include Super Fan but is still a great deal. Don't hang up until they give you this offer.

New customers simply sign up and get this deal, no questions asked.

If anyone is interested in getting a $100 credit for signing up, PM ME!

WTF does that have to do with the article? This is about people who DO NOT HAVE DIRECTV service getting this. If you have DirecTv and you have Sunday Ticket you really don't need the broadband service now do you?

From what I read when they renewed their deal with DirecTv that by 2012 this service would be made available nationwide wether or not you can get DirecTv. Yeah $349 is high but it's less than $299 plus $60 per month for DirecTv service you don't need.

I might look into this. I can't get DirectTv where I live and this would be awesome if I could see all the colts games here.

Slow down, cowboy. I just wanted to make members aware of how to get this for free if they were to subscribe to DirecTV. There's nothing wrong with having some options.

Re: You can get this for free ...

Problem is that its not going to happen. As we are the only people with nflst and anyone who thinks they are going to the pull the whole I am going to leave dtv if you dont give me that new customer promotion is smoking crack. Because if you wanted the package that bad then there only one place to get it.

Best people are going to do is if they already have nfl st and threaten to cancel nflst if they dont get superfan for free.

Free superfan possible assuming account history

New customer offer for an exsiting customer less then 2% chance due to most customer pulling this bs not even having a good enough pay record to warrant giving out such an expensive package to keep a customer

As usual the Media is clueless

it says nothing about newyork only nor it just being a test . you have to have the super fan package to get this.

no wonder so many newspapers are going belly up, they can't seem to even get news stories correct.
What they are testing is broadband access to NFL SundayTicket *without* having a DirecTV satellite subscription/SuperPass.

This is using the same platform as SuperPass, but it's not the same thing.

$349

Thats what happens when you have a monopoly like Directv does on the NFL...next year it will be $449 and so on and so on

$349 per season..

...vs $48 per year..via SIRIUSly/XM radio. Hmm... Granted, I can't watch, but I can be anywhere with my inno and listen to all the games. As well as NFL radio 24/7/365.

Based on PQ I have seen from sat tv, forget it...

blocking issues, freezing, rain fade that seems to be associated with sat tv most of the time, it's not worth it to me. anyone who thinks that online will be any better, you have to be kidding. latency is not just due to the access speed, there are so many other issues that can affect performance including the machine & its wireless adapter as well. I used to watch youtube & in HQ mode (thats not even true HD) and there's still lag & stuttering at times.

while I like the possibility of watching online as well, when crystal clear fios offers it, then tell me about it.
techygeek

From what I heard & the few times I had a chance to see the PQ was actually in a few stores that said they had it; people kept trying to tell me, wow doesn't that look great. Not to me, maybe i'm just spoiled to the PQ of my FIOS but I saw blocking freezing (sometimes only in part of the picture) and not just one channel. For example, there were 4 shows going on 4 different tv's. 3 looked like that, one was not in HD, 2 of the 4 of them looked very soft. It was when I was at an electronics store to buy a TV, I just asked what their PQ source is, they advised me they get DirecTV.

Also, I fear that the approach with these issues will be to try to NR it as much as possible to make it look clean. NR (or Noise Reduction) is definately not a cure all to it. This seeming to be the only means I can think of to combat these issues results in a very dull soft picture that, to me, does not depict the crisp clarity HD should have.

I would rather pay more even if I didn't have the NFL games to get shows that are crisp & clear.

Now this test via broadband, I think, is an explosion of trouble waiting to happen.. forget the fact that a hacker can likely write some kind of program that can blindly video capture the shows. I cannot see HD excelling in clarity on a public open broadband platform, not even high speed. I can imagine lag, freezes and blocking issue that to most, would likely at best, not look much better than the PQ of DirecTV's picture.

Please cable & telco companies.. work out a deal to get NFL sunday ticket next year when DirecTV's stranglehold, from what I read here.. •»www.defefx.com/nfl-sunday-ticket-directv/, is finally up .

Thanks
