AT&T, Verizon have recently expressed interest
09:05AM Friday Nov 20 2009 by Karl Bode
tags: satellite · business · rumor · DIRECTV
For years the rumor has floated out there that either Verizon or AT&T would buy DirecTV in order to have direct control of the company's satellite TV operations. Sometimes these rumors are based in conjecture, but more often than not they're based on nothing whatsoever. With DirecTV prepared to get a new CEO (their last CEO just departed to be Rupert Murdoch's right-hand man at News Corp.), the rumors are apparently bubbling up once again. According to Reuters, representatives from both AT&T and Verizon have approached Liberty Media over the last few years about a sale, and the outlet cites sources who believe new CEO Michael White is little more than a "babysitter" until this endlessly-rumored deal can be accomplished.

Not Again !

I just got rid of ATT as my cell provider and was once again happily ATT-Free. Now I'll need to start considering dumping DirecTV again.

ATT has no place in my life - they suck, bigtime !

You realize that even if a deal what reached total at&t wouldn't take over for at least a year. So were probably taking at least 18 months to 2 years before DirecTv is taken over by anyone.

It's about Football

What everyone always misses is it's not about DirecTV as a company, it's about their exclusive NFL rights.

Imagine how badly Verizon (FIOS) and ATT (Uverse) want to take over DirectTV to get access to that? I'm sure another part of it would be to herd existing DirectTV customers into FIOS or ATT as well.

I really like Uverse (better than FIOS actually) as a service except for the limit of 1 to 2 (depending) HD channels on in a house at the same time. Imagine I want to watch an HD show in one room while recording another. Anyone else in the house is stuck with SD programming. That is the real flaw of Uverse that needs to be addressed. Otherwise, Uverse is a lot better than FIOS from what I've seen.

Re: It's about Football

Unless you mind the picture quality. They're both expensive. I've had both. I currently have Uverse ( for 10 more days), and it's a pain when I want to *record* two programs and watch a third all in HD. Fios didn't have that problem. ...and did I mention the picture quality Fios has over Uverse?

DirecTV and NFL

I installed DTV for four years and I can tell you without a doubt most of new installs tend be basd on their sports packages. While DISH had it sewed up with foreign language programing, DTV was all about football, baseball, cricket, hockey and a lot of other things.

As far as I am concerned DTV could buy ATT and become a phone company. ATT already has TV so what do they need more TV for?

Besides ATT is toxic. Anything they touch usually dies a slow and agonizing death. Remember the big fat failures they had with DISH partnerships?

I think it's time for ATT to have a disaster. Maybe scorpions or snakes. Sandstorms....? I haven't decided yet.

Direct tv is better then cable where I am at

Direct tv is better then cable where I am at

in price, better hardware, and more hd then I can get where I'm at.

comcast Chicago land sucks real bad $15-$20/m for a HD DVR Wtf?

and sci-if in comcast digital classic? speed and fox moive channel in the sports pack?

nice ripoff I can get direct tv HD dvr for the same price as comcast digital classic and not need to pay $15/m more to get the HD dvr with comcast. also I can add any box on direct tv for $5/m

AT&T could turn the tide on Verizon

If AT&T bought DirecTV, they could then show maps of their video coverage verses Verizon's video coverage. Then Verizon could sue AT&T for advertising the truthful coverage maps!

AT&T SUCKS!

AT&T should eat shit, and die! No good can come from throwing DTv under the AT&T bus, period. Want your personal viewing habits sold to the highest bidder? Want your cost of access to sports programming and HD content to skyrocket? Want all programming CENSORED? Want quality of production and delivery of product to degrade despite ever-rising cost to end user? Then, choose AT&T! The great AT&T behemoth sucketh the life out of all things, living or dead. A pox upon the succubus AT&T!

If the Death Star buys DTV, I will go back to cable. If Verizon buys them I will stay put. The Death Star destroys everything it touches.

DirecTV

I have been with DirecTV for many years. Very happy with it, except when problems arose and I had to talk to a "tecnician" in India who had to respond according to his check list, not according to what he might or might not know. Only once did I connect with a tecnician in Seattle and my problem was finally solved. I stay with them because I am able to get LinkTV and other goodies. If anyone buys them out and discontinues my favorite, I will switch to the private satellite access used by a friend of mine.

Everything Old Is New Again

I remember about 5 years ago they were going to buy Dish, with whom they had a reseller agreement at the time.
