Soft Launch January 17, official launch in early February
(old news - 02:34PM Friday Jan 11 2008)
tags: satellite · Video · business · DIRECTV
Tipped by dbmaven See Profile
DirecTV will be publicly launching the ability to remotely schedule DVR Recordings on or about January 17th. This is a 'soft launch' - the official announcements/publication of the service will happen sometime in February. Called 'Remote Booking' during the beta test phase, you need a free account on DirecTV.com to access the service. From the TV listing page, the option to "record to receiver" will be available when you expand the title of a show.

A pop-up window will allow you to select which DVR (if you have more than one) you wish to use to record the show. A second option will be available for low bandwidth mobile devices (cell phones/pda's) by going to this URL, which allows you to do rudimentary searches for shows/channels and schedule from a listing of events.

This is of course in addition to DirecTV's plans to offer broadband film downloads, which will require that you plug your broadband connection into the back of DirecTV's new DVRs. More information on the remote scheduling functionality (and a leaked product brochure) can be found at DBS Talk.

Good bye DirecTV

I've been waiting for CES to decide what I'm going to do with DirecTV. Based on the lack of news at CES and this information that they've decided to take Dish's route and compete with TiVo rather than work with them. I don't like the new receivers from DirecTV. To it looks like Comcast/FiOS with TiVo for me. Two HR10-250's HD DirecTiVo's will soon be eBay.

Re: Good bye DirecTV

Have to disagree with you here. Direc TV's dvrs have come a long way. I have been very happy with my hr-20. I guess I don't see the big deal with tivo service over direc tv. I think the remote booking is going to be a big advantage for direc tv. Many times someone brings up a show at work thi way i can remember to record it. Can't say i will ever go to cable after they couldn't even run a simple coax connection to my house.

Re: Good bye DirecTV

This has been available for a little while now on the Beta software for the HR20-700 (I have two). I saw this on dbstalk , yesterday, so just as a test, I booked a recording of Scrubs at 1500 E on my bedroom HR20 from my T-Mobile cell phone. Worked great as I enjoyed the episode at about 2230 last night.

Most people, who want all the available HD content that DirecTV has, take the plunge and try the HR2x DVRs in their own home. About 90% come to like the HR2x after living with it from a couple of weeks to 2 or 3 months. About 10% are die-hard TiVO-natics that cannot, or will not, adapt.

If you are in the latter group, enjoy your Comcast/FIOS - hope it all works out for you.

Re: Good bye DirecTV

I don't like the new receiver but I could potentially adapt. More importantly I don't think others (her name will be withheld) in my house would adapt well to the new DVRs and so the reason for the departure from DirecTV. Recently content on local cable has reached par with DirecTV but I'll miss the reliability of satellite. FiOS is just down the road so I'll have more options soon and will be able to recycle the hardware with either provider.

What a waste of a feature....

They have got to be kidding me with this crap. Remote DVR scheduling?? Come on, how could this possibly be useful to anyone? Are you that much of a hermit that the one time you leave your house you absolutely must schedule a recording that you somehow forgot about in your haste to depart? Are you so oblivious to whats on TV, that in your travels around the neighborhood you stumble across a billboard ad for a TV show and say to yourself, "WOW! If only I could have my DVR record that!" Well I guess if thats you, then you are in luck with this new "feature". For the rest of us who actually program their DVR's to record ahead of time this is merely a laughable attempt at something (although I am not sure what....)

Re: What a waste of a feature....

Clearly you are not a Center Ice subscriber. Most days the channels that will show the HD feeds are not yet available in the guide by the time I leave the house. It is only sometime later (very early morning) that they appear in the guide and I have phone home later in the day to get somebody to set the recording for me. So this is a very welcome feature for me.

I imagine this is a problem for the NBA and MLB packages as well. Anytime there is more programming than available channels you cannot look into the future using the guide and set recordings. Most times the games only show up in the guide at the most the day before they air.

You are correct that I am not a Center Ice subscriber, nor do I have DTV. I can tell you however, that TWC lists every sporting event in the guide approximately one week ahead of time (just like they do with all their shows), so this isnt an issue for me. Either way, even things like the debates are listed days in advance on TWC's platform. Perhaps if DTV simply set their guide up normally there wouldnt be a need for this type of "feature". From your description, it does indeed sound like something that is useful to you so I am glad they make it!

Re: What a waste of a feature....

If you don't have DirecTV, why so hung up on this?

One good reason for doing this - forget the "REMOTE" moniker. The ability to browse the listings on a web page and schedule the event is far superior to ANY interface available using a remote control and set-top box.

I've been beta testing this for a couple of months, and I don't bother scheduling ANYTHING using the TV/STB interface. I go to the web page, browse around, find what I want, and schedule it. It works. And its far easier/faster/more convenient.

The fact that I can do this at any internet enabled site with a computer, or from a cell phone or PDA? Not features I'm going to use a lot - but very nice to have.

So - enjoy your DVR experience, and those of us who can do it using a web page (ReplayTV, DirecTV, TiVO) will enjoy ours (more!).

I have A Tivo s3 and I have used it a couple of times when i'm was not home. I usually at my daughter house when it might list show that I'm interested in. I'll use her computer and scheduled it. I don't spend every hr looking at a tv guide for programs or watch every channel. So for as no body use it I think you are wrong on that.

Actually, I find this service very handy, as my job requires about 9 months of travel throughout the world a year, most of which time I'm working 12+ hours per day, 7 days a week, and do not have time to watch much TV. Granted, season passes will record automatically, but its the one off shows that I like this feature for!

Maybe you don't travel much, but I can see a use for this. You're on the road and forgot to schedule a show to record. Or, you've been so busy because you have a life and don't sit around looking at the guide. You're on the road and you find out that there's something on tv that you want to watch. Bam! Easy peasy... I think it's a good idea.

Occasionally people hear about shows they might not have heard about before, and decide to give it a look.

Kinda hard to pre-program your DVR for a show that you don't know you want to watch yet.

I can leave myself a to-do note in my phone to set the DVR, or use this new feature. Frankly, this feature gets it done, and I don't have to remember it later on.

Why such a boner about this thing?

It was a cool feature when TiVo introduced it years ago. I use it all the time from work, personally. If I read about a cool series on Discovery (Rise of the Video Game, etc), I set it to record and continue on with my scheduled plans for the evening directly from work.

I currently have a direct TV DVR and both my wife and I are frustrated with the software. However Tivo is so much more expensive we stick with Direct TV DVR. If the interface of this online management is better it may be of some use. To us anyway.

What is wrong with this feature?

did you want this to make you a sandwich.... Directv announced a receiver that can make your computer a media server to feed to all of your dvrs and xbox 360.

The reason why directv didnt have a conference was because they didnt need one. In november, they began the launch of their new channels and delivered. Why repeat what they have done.

Dish, Verizon and Comcast had to do the conferences because they needed to answer Directv(The leader in HD)

What about TiVo units?

What I want to know is, how does this affect the DirecTV Tivo users? It seems that lately DTV has taken a very hush-hush approach to a serious software problem in the 6.3e version. The units will reboot randomly, usually after about an hour of use. Personally I've been living with this problem for several months, and I just want the damn thing to work correctly--the hell with new features. When I call DTV they just want me to upgrade to their new DVR unit which I absolutely hate (my in-laws have one, and I just don't like it).

Just look at the responses on this DTV forum. This is hardly an isolated problem for users, and one lucky person actually had it fixed when he volunteered to test a 6.3f software version. The problem is there, the fix is possible, but the DTV CSR's refuse to acknowledge any of it. My only hope is that this new feature is part of a new software version that may fix this problem for the TiVo folks.

Re: What about TiVo units?

I talked to the tech guys, they transferred me to TiVo. The TiVo folks said they can't do anything because it's DTV's hardware. I called back to DTV and they hung up on me in the middle of transferring me between techs. Right now my workaround is to turn on the Tivo early in the morning, let it reboot, and then it's good for the rest of that day.

Great when ReplayTV had it too

This was a neat feature when ReplayTV had it since the 5000 series units (they finally shut it down at the end of October) I think it had been around for better than 5 years. Now I can only do this through third party freeware programs.

Nothing too new, just glad to see that DTV is coming up with a useful feature for their DVR's. Now if they could only do in-home show sharing I may actually give up the replays for something new and HD. Until then, the replay has been and will be one of the better DVR's out there

MRV (Multi-room viewing) has been confirmed as a forthcoming feature of the HR2x DVRs - although not officially announced anywhere that I've seen.

The recent purchase of ReplayTV may also bring some interesting things to the platform in the not too distant future.

About Time

If you travel often this would come in handy. This would be good so I can record my Phoenix Suns games. To all the people putting Direct TV down. You have a choice to leave. I have over 85 HD channels and I am on the premium package. I had Cox and they Nickel & Dime you for everything. They charge you for every receiver! I have Cox for INTERNET ONLY. Had Dish Network and have some booty ass channels you never even heard of! I will stay with my Direct TV and the HR20-700 You can stream your Music and Pictures off your PC. Can't do that with TIVO!

Been There Done That

I don't understand why DirecTV does not finish and let you watch it on your phone as well. With ORB, I have been able to do all of this and more on my phone for years.
